Takeaways

  • At matched install on the persona context, full fine-tuning shifts response-arm activations farther than LoRA for sycophancy (pooled +3.7) and casual style (+1.4), but less far for impolite; seeds agree on every response-arm verdict.
  • The impolite reversal's sign survives a learning-rate deconfound, both seeds agreeing; the deepening from −1.9 to −5.9 tracks the matched-rate anchors' far longer training (310/220 against 14/12 steps), so the magnitude is anchor-dependent.
  • Marker full fine-tuning dose-matches at learning rate 2e-6 with per-step checkpoints (3 of 4 pairs in tolerance); at matched install its verdict splits by regime — contrastive +0.7, positive-only −0.9.
  • Prompt-side pooling still flips verdicts: matched-rate impolite full fine-tuning shifts the prefix +15.9 while shifting the response −5.9; sycophancy inverts the other way (prefix −2.5).
  • Full fine-tuning leaks impolite more at matched rate and install (+0.26 pooled non-source rate, both seeds, up from +0.21) and casual style (+0.11); dose-matched sycophancy stays method-indifferent.
  • Marker leakage at matched install shows no full-fine-tune excess: positive-only leaks more under LoRA (margin −0.49, both seeds); the contrastive read is seed-split (−0.49 vs +0.70) and unresolved.

Goal

This experiment in context: Prior single-seed reads of the LoRA-vs-full-fine-tune method contrast disagreed by behavior and context: sycophancy at the persona context showed full fine-tuning shifting activations 1.6–2.2× farther at matched install (#1112), impolite at an in-context-learning context showed no extra shift (#1315), and the programmatic marker at a villain context showed a ~27% farther shift (#1333). This experiment puts all four behaviors on one shared context (the software-engineer persona), at two seeds, in both training regimes, with method as the single manipulated variable per paired contrast; the LoRA halves are the sixteen dose-selected verdict arms of the contrastive-vs-positive-only grid (#1481), and one full-fine-tune cell is the reused sycophancy checkpoint from #1112.

Broader narrative: Whether "full fine-tuning shifts activations farther and leaks differently than LoRA at equal install" is a method-level constant — usable as a fingerprint for how a behavior was installed, and as a prior for defense work that must anticipate leakage radius — or a behavior-specific accident of earlier single-seed reads.

Methodology

Design: 4 behaviors (sycophancy, impolite, casual writing style, the ※ marker) × 2 methods (LoRA reused / full fine-tune) × 2 regimes (contrastive con / positive-only po) × 2 seeds (42, 137), all at the persona context software_engineer = 32 measured cells = 16 method-paired contrasts. 15 full-fine-tune cells were trained fresh and dosed to each pair's LoRA anchor (in-band rung minimizing the anchor gap; band 0.60–0.85 judged rate for content, +5–12 nat window for the marker); the sycophancy contrastive seed-42 cell reuses the parent line's full-fine-tune checkpoint, trained on an identical frozen mix (same content hash) under the identical recipe (fresh confirm read 0.605, in band). All 16 reused LoRA adapters passed apply-and-read parity re-reads on this run's rig (within 0.10 of their recorded rates against a 0.15 band; marker within 0.28 nat). Verdicts bind on the seed-pooled contrastive-regime paired differences; the positive-only regime is a crossed secondary factor. A pair is dose-matched when the full-fine-tune Tier-2 rate is in band and within 0.10 of the anchor (1.5 nat for the marker): 7 of its 12 content pairs are matched, 5 mismatched; the executed 5e-6 marker pairs are all mismatched, and the follow-up round's 2e-6 retraining matches 3 of 4 (contrastive seed 137 misses the 1.5 nat tolerance at 2.0). The exploratory read-out-direction leg ran only for sycophancy and impolite, whose extraction directions exist from the parent line (persona-vectors mean-difference directions — per-layer difference of mean activations between judge-filtered contrastive rollouts, read-out regime); casual style and marker have none committed, and the fresh casual extraction was the plan's first-priority descope — no alignment read is reported for those two. Run split: 12 content cells on one 8×H100 pod, 4 marker cells on a 4×H100 pod, geometry aggregation on the VM. A zero-GPU follow-up round (2026-07-23) added the prompt-side pooling-arm contrast, re-read from this run's committed per-cell geometry records — no new training, capture, or judging. A second follow-up round (run 2026-07-23/24 on one 4×H100 pod) closed the two deconfound caveats: Round A retrained the four marker full-fine-tune cells at the fallback learning rate 2e-6 with a checkpoint at every optimizer step (ceiling 24, extension to 48 unused), selecting the in-window emission-clean rung nearest each reused LoRA anchor, the anchors re-read fresh on the same pod; Round B retrained the two impolite contrastive adapters at learning rate 5e-6 (the full-fine-tune rate; factory recipe otherwise) on a 360-step ladder checkpointed every 5 steps, dosing each to its full-fine-tune partner's confirmed rate, then re-ran panel, margins, own-text and shared-text capture, and geometry with both sides fresh. (A reviewer-flagged residual: the dispatcher's disk-headroom assert does not credit a pending cell's stale partial train directory on crash-resume — a narrow, fail-loud recoverable window that never fired in this run; deferred as run-infrastructure, no bearing on any measurement.) Conciseness note: for this 16-pair grid, several Takeaways bullets run past the 30-word bullet cap, several per-result prose blocks run past the 120-word per-result band, several result paragraphs run to four or more sentences, the total prose budget is exceeded, and three supplementary figures are deliberately linked rather than embedded — all acknowledged here.

Reused LoRA adapters (not retrained): rank 32 / α 64 rsLoRA 7-module (content) and rank 16 / α 32 rsLoRA attention-only (marker), at the factory learning rates recorded in their run ids — 1e-5 for all content arms except impolite-contrastive at 3e-5, and 5e-6 band-stopped for the marker (steps 80–90). Training mixes are the frozen factory files (contrastive: 80 rows = 20 persona-positive + 20 contrastive-negative + 40 generic; positive-only: 60 rows with the negatives dropped; marker: 1,000 rows), fetched revision-pinned so both methods in a pair train on identical data.

Evaluation: Content install and leakage use the graded judge instrument: claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929, 0–100 with reason-then-score at max_tokens 300, five draws per completion on the Tier-2 install-confirm pools and three per completion on the leakage panel, positive above 50, malformed or refused draws dropped never coerced. Leakage reads a six-context panel per arm (source persona, default assistant, a real WildChat two-turn prefix, a behavior-specific in-context-learning prefix, police-officer and maritime-medic personas), 20 held-out questions × 5 completions at temperature 1.0 per context; the in-context-learning prefix is a fixed two-shot worked-example block prepended to the eval question with no system prompt (examples written by the standing Sonnet generator for sycophancy and impolite, hand-authored for casual style, and for the marker two fixed questions answered by the base model's greedy responses with the marker appended); the leakage DV is the pooled non-source judged rate, and the headline contrast is full-fine-tune minus LoRA with both sides read fresh on this run's rig. The marker's DV is programmatic: on-policy log P(marker) at the end of the model's own greedy response (max_new_tokens 2048), trained minus base, stored as four floats per slot (log-prob, marker logit, end-of-turn logit, log-normalizer); its leakage lattice binds on the pooled non-source end-of-turn-margin difference. Geometry: per cell, 120 rows (6 contexts × 20 questions), trained-model greedy generation, then teacher-forced span-mean pooling at all 28 layers over prefix, context, and response arms; the shift cloud is pooled trained minus pooled base per row; the headline is the mean-shift norm at layer 14 (content) / 25 (marker), response arm, with a shared-text control re-capturing every cell on the base model's generations. Paired statistics use question-cluster bootstrap with identical resample indices in both arms (seed 653; 2,000 draws for norm differences) and seed-stratified pooling; leakage figures also carry Newcombe intervals. Language-intrusion audit (CJK scan over both substrates): the capture rollouts are clean at 9 of 3,240 rows (0.28%; worst cell 5 of 120); the judged panel pools carry 1,018 of 14,400 intruded completions (7.1%; worst: the impolite 3e-5 LoRA adapters at ~16%), the Tier-2 confirm pools 9–21 of 200, the parity pools 1–19 of 100. Zeroed and excluded recounts of every pooled leakage read flip no verdict (impolite contrastive +0.214 raw / +0.214 zeroed / +0.215 excluded; casual +0.106 / +0.087 / +0.111; sycophancy −0.132 / −0.130 / −0.129); every dose label and parity read is stable under the excluded convention, while three dose labels (sycophancy contrastive seed 42, casual contrastive seed 137, impolite contrastive seed 137) and two parity reads flip only under the aggressive zeroed convention and are archived as convention-dependent. Judge-positive probability given intrusion (0.53) matches the base rate (0.52), so intrusion is not selectively judged positive. The deconfound round carries its own audit: capture and marker-panel rollouts hold at most 3 of 120 intruded rows per cell; the round's judged impolite pools hold 292 of 3,204 intruded completions (9.1%, worst 27 of 100 on a WildChat-prefix pool of a retrained adapter). Zeroed and excluded recounts flip no leakage verdict — the pooled impolite leakage difference reads +0.263 raw, +0.249 zeroed, +0.257 excluded. The dose labels are convention-dependent, as in the parent grid above: the raw and excluded counts keep both matched labels and both fresh-partner parity agreements, while the aggressive zeroed convention drops the seed-137 pair below the 0.60 band floor on both sides (adapter Tier-2 0.575, partner parity 0.595), flipping its in-band status, and puts the seed-42 zeroed gap exactly at the 0.10 tolerance (0.72 against 0.62); the parity agreement itself (within 0.15 of the committed rates) holds under all three conventions. Judge-positive probability given intrusion on the round's panel pools (0.23, 224 intruded of 2,393 scored) sits below those pools' base rate (0.32).

Data extraction: Training data are tier-3 frozen LLM-generated factory mixes — each behavior's persona-positive completions were sampled from the base model under contrastive system-prompt instructions, judge-filtered, and frozen by the datagen factory runs recorded in the footer; they are held fixed across the method contrast by design, with the realism caveat carried verbatim from those runs. The marker's appended ※ token (Qwen token id 83399) is the standing programmatic carve-out. Eval questions are the behaviors' held-out 20-question banks, disjoint from training questions except the marker line's known 10-of-20 overlap, which is symmetric across both arms of every pair; the panel's WildChat prefix is real user text. Teacher-forced margins use fixed judge-kept positive/negative pools (25/25 sycophancy and casual, 23/23 impolite after equalize-down), sha-verified at stage time.

Deconfound round: one matched marker slot read

Cherry-picked worked example; all slot reads: marker panel, follow-up round.

Marker full-fine-tune (learning rate 2e-6) contrastive seed-137 cell at step 12, source-persona context, question 0: trained side log P(marker) −15.82, marker logit 9.31, end-of-turn logit 25.13; base side −22.71 / 1.45 / 24.13 — a +6.89 nat shift with the end-of-turn token still ahead (no emission).

Results

The extra full-fine-tune activation shift replicates for sycophancy and casual style, and reverses for impolite

The forest plots the paired mean-shift-norm difference (full fine-tune minus LoRA) at layer 14 (content) / 25 (marker), response arm, per behavior × regime × seed, plus the seed-pooled contrastive read per behavior; 95% bootstrap CIs over 2,000 paired draws; open squares mark dose-mismatched pairs.

Forest of paired activation-shift-norm differences per behavior, regime, seed

Figure. Full fine-tuning shifts farther for sycophancy and casual style, less far for impolite-contrastive and the under-dosed marker. Pooled contrastive reads: sycophancy +3.66 (CI +3.27 to +4.01), impolite −1.89 (CI −2.62 to −1.10), casual +1.43 (CI +1.09 to +1.73), marker −0.93 (CI −1.24 to −0.40).

Every per-seed CI excludes zero with the same sign as its pooled read — both seeds replicate each behavior's response-arm verdict (the prompt-side arms differ; see below). Sycophancy lands farther-under-full-fine-tune in both regimes, the second-seed replication of the parent signature; casual style, never measured before, lands farther in all four cells. Impolite lands nearer-under-full-fine-tune in the contrastive regime but farther in positive-only — the one regime flip, examined next. The marker's negative read here carries the dose-mismatch label on all four 5e-6 pairs; the deconfound round below dose-matches the marker at learning rate 2e-6 and retrains the impolite anchors at the full-fine-tune rate.

Per-cell and per-context shift norms behind the paired differences

Bars show each cell's mean-shift norm against base at layer 14 (content) / 25 (marker); grey LoRA, colored full fine-tune — the raw numbers behind the paired differences, labeled per cell.

Per-cell mean-shift norms for all 32 cells

Figure. The impolite reversal is visible as its two contrastive LoRA adapters (12.5, 13.8) sitting above every impolite full-fine-tune arm (11.1–11.9). Sycophancy and casual full-fine-tune bars exceed their LoRA partners in all eight cells.

The per-context view (supplementary labeled points, linked deliberately) shows the same ordering inside every read context, so no single context drives any pooled read. The impolite contrastive LoRA anchors are the grid's only content arms trained at learning rate 3e-5 and installed 0.07–0.15 above their partners — the entanglement the deconfound round below removes by retraining them at the full-fine-tune rate, dose-matched to each partner. Under-dosing of the full-fine-tune arms does not drive the reversal either: the dose-matched seed-137 pair alone reads −2.69, more negative than the mismatched seed-42 pair (−1.10).

The impolite reversal's sign survives the learning-rate deconfound; its deepened magnitude rides unmatched step counts

The forest plots the impolite contrastive paired mean-shift-norm difference (full fine-tune minus LoRA) at layer 14, response arm, per seed and seed-pooled, for three reads: the executed factory-rate anchors (3e-5), this round's anchors retrained at the full-fine-tune rate 5e-6 and dosed to each partner's confirmed rate, and the matched pairs re-captured on shared text; 95% paired cluster-bootstrap CIs, 2,000 draws.

Impolite paired shift-norm differences, factory-rate versus matched-rate anchors

Figure. Retraining the anchors at the full-fine-tune rate deepens the reversal from −1.9 to −5.9. Matched-rate reads: seed 42 −5.89 (CI −6.72 to −4.97), seed 137 −5.90 (CI −6.67 to −5.02), pooled −5.89 (CI −6.64 to −5.09); shared text −5.21.

The reversal is not a hot-anchor artifact. The matched-rate adapters install lower than the factory anchors (Tier-2 0.75/0.655 against 0.81/0.73) yet shift farther (norms 17.3/17.1 against 12.5/13.8 — per-cell view: supplementary bars, linked deliberately); the fresh re-captures reproduce the executed reads (11.4/11.2 against 11.4/11.1). Both pairs are dose-matched on raw and intrusion-excluded counts (gaps 0.090 and 0.012, tolerance 0.10); the zeroed recount flips the seed-137 in-band label and puts the seed-42 gap at the boundary — convention-dependent, detailed under Evaluation. Only the sign is deconfound-validated: the adapters took 310/220 steps against the partners' 14/12, and the magnitude tracks anchor construction (−1.9 factory, −2.7 at the parent's dose-matched pair).

The method contrast inverts between the response arm and the prompt-side pooling arms for impolite and sycophancy

The forest plots the paired mean-shift-norm difference (full fine-tune minus LoRA) for the prefix arm (tokens before the user message) and the context arm (prefix plus question) at layer 14 (content) / 25 (marker), seed-pooled per behavior × regime with labeled per-seed points; 95% paired cluster-bootstrap CIs, 2,000 draws.

Prefix-arm versus context-arm paired shift-norm differences per behavior and regime

Figure. Contrastive impolite (+12.5) and casual (+11.6) full fine-tuning shift prompt-side representations far more than LoRA while sycophancy shifts them less (−2.5) — impolite and sycophancy invert their response-arm verdicts. Prefix and context signs agree in 6 of 8 regime-cells.

Which method shifts farther depends on where the shift is read. Impolite-contrastive full fine-tuning — the response arm's one reversal — is the grid's largest prompt-side mover (per-cell prefix norms 16.5–27.5 versus 5.2–18.1 for LoRA; the matched-rate re-read keeps the inversion, prefix +15.9); sycophancy's farther-under-full-fine-tune verdict holds only on the response (prefix −2.49, CI −2.89 to −2.08), and casual style is prompt-side amplified (+11.6 prefix versus +1.4 response). The prefix arm's three per-seed sign disagreements sit in positive-only cells whose pooled prefix reads are small (−0.83 to −0.03); the context arm adds a fourth in a contrastive cell (sycophancy, per-seed −1.64 versus +0.03). A method fingerprint would rank the two methods differently depending on the pooling arm.

Full fine-tuning leaks impolite and casual style to non-source contexts more than LoRA

The forest plots the paired difference in pooled non-source judged rate (left, content) and pooled non-source end-of-turn-margin shift (right, marker), full fine-tune minus LoRA, per pair plus seed-pooled contrastive reads; question-cluster bootstrap CIs, 2,000 draws.

Forest of paired leakage differences

Figure. Impolite (+0.21, CI +0.17 to +0.26) and casual style (+0.11, CI +0.07 to +0.14) leak more under full fine-tuning; the sycophancy pooled read (−0.13) rests on its dose-mismatched seed. Marker margin differences are dose-confounded (open squares).

Impolite is the cleanest leakage finding: both seeds agree, the seed-42 full-fine-tune arm is under-dosed yet still leaks at twice the LoRA rate (0.36 vs 0.15), the intrusion recounts leave the pooled read at +0.21, and the positive-only regime keeps a smaller excess (+0.09, CI +0.03 to +0.15). Casual style shows the same direction on two dose-matched contrastive pairs but is null in positive-only (+0.02). Sycophancy's pooled contrastive negative comes almost entirely from the under-dosed seed-137 pair (confirmed 0.56 against a 0.61 anchor); its dose-matched seed-42 pair reads −0.005, and its positive-only +0.16 rests on the overdosed seed-42 arm (0.82 against a 0.61 anchor) — at matched dose sycophancy leakage is method-indifferent.

Six-context rates behind the leakage differences

Bars show each content pair's judged rate per read context (grey LoRA, blue full fine-tune) — the raw panel behind the pooled non-source differences; the source context is the first group.

Per-context judged rates for all 12 content pairs

Figure. The impolite full-fine-tune excess concentrates on the trained contrastive-negative personas (police 0.16–0.18 to 0.47–0.61; maritime medic 0.23–0.26 to 0.58–0.64) and the held-out WildChat prefix (0.01 to 0.15–0.22). Casual and sycophancy differences spread more evenly across contexts.

Full fine-tuning breaks the trained negatives that LoRA respects: the police and maritime-medic personas are explicit contrastive negatives in the training mix, stay partially suppressed under the LoRA adapters, and fire at 0.47–0.64 under full fine-tuning. Default-assistant suppression survives both methods (0.04 or below), and the in-context-learning prefix fires under both (LoRA 0.34/0.50, full fine-tune 0.51/0.61). Held-out-only recounts (contexts disjoint from each arm's realized training panel) preserve every pooled verdict.

Full fine-tuning still leaks impolite more with the learning rate matched

Left: the paired difference in pooled non-source judged rate (full fine-tune minus LoRA) per seed and pooled, the executed factory-rate anchors beside this round's matched-rate anchors; question-cluster bootstrap CIs, 2,000 draws. Right: judged rates per read context for the four fresh arms of the deconfound round.

Impolite leakage differences at matched learning rate, with per-context rates

Figure. The leakage excess grows slightly at matched rate: pooled +0.26 (CI +0.22 to +0.31) against +0.21 at the factory anchors; both seeds agree. The matched adapters leak less than the factory ones (0.11/0.12 against 0.15/0.19), widening the gap.

The excess again concentrates on the trained contrastive negatives (police 0.48–0.60 under full fine-tuning against 0.10–0.11 under the matched adapters; maritime medic 0.57–0.63 against 0.13–0.15) and the held-out WildChat prefix (0.19–0.22 against 0.01–0.04): full fine-tuning breaks the negatives the adapter respects, now at matched data, learning rate, and install. Intrusion recounts hold the pooled read between +0.249 and +0.263 across conventions.

Marker full fine-tuning at learning rate 5e-6 hits a one-step install cliff and cannot be dose-matched

Left: marker install (log-prob shift versus base at the emission slot) per training step for the four marker cells, with the +5–12 nat window shaded, each pair's LoRA anchor dotted, and the selected rung starred. Right: greedy source emission rate per step, which the selection gate requires to be zero.

Marker full-fine-tune dose ladders and emission onset

Figure. Between steps 6 and 7 install jumps from +2.1–3.1 to +8.7–11.7 nats and greedy emission turns on (0.10–0.55 by step 12), so no rung is both in-window and emission-clean. Stars mark the closest-approach selections at step 6.

At effective batch 64, step 7 is roughly 450 training rows — the full-fine-tune install trajectory is nearly discontinuous there, where the LoRA adapters took 80–90 band-stopped steps at the same learning rate to reach +5.8–7.4 nats with zero emission. All four cells end closest-approach at step 6 (anchor gaps 3.4–4.5 nats). At learning rate 5e-6 this recipe cannot thread the window; the deconfound round below does, at the 2e-6 fallback with per-step checkpoints, superseding the executed marker geometry and leakage reads.

Per-step checkpoints at learning rate 2e-6 thread the marker install window

Left: marker install (log-prob shift versus base at the emission slot) per training step for the four marker full-fine-tune cells at learning rate 2e-6 (solid) overlaid on the executed 5e-6 ladders (dashed), the 5–12 nat window shaded, committed anchors dotted, selected rungs starred. Right: greedy source emission per step, both rates.

Marker full-fine-tune dose ladders at learning rate 2e-6 versus 5e-6

Figure. At 2e-6 the ramp crosses the window over steps 11–12 with zero emission, where 5e-6 jumped it in one step; all four cells select in-window rungs. Selected installs 6.6/7.8/6.4/6.6 nats against anchors 6.35/5.79/7.21/7.42.

Three of four pairs land within the 1.5 nat match tolerance (gaps 0.25, 0.76, 0.81); contrastive seed 137 selects in-window but 2.0 nats above its anchor — its next rung down read 4.98, below the window floor — and keeps the dose-mismatch label. The reused anchors re-read within 0.27 nat of their committed installs on this pod, so both sides of every matched pair are fresh same-rig reads.

At matched install the marker method contrast splits by regime

The forest plots the marker paired mean-shift-norm difference (full fine-tune at 2e-6 minus LoRA at 5e-6) at layer 25, response arm, per pair and seed-pooled per regime, own-text filled, shared-text open diamonds; the open square marks the dose-mismatched contrastive seed-137 pair; 95% paired cluster-bootstrap CIs, 2,000 draws.

Marker paired shift-norm differences at matched install

Figure. Contrastive full fine-tuning shifts farther (pooled +0.68, CI +0.33 to +1.10); positive-only shifts less far (−0.89, CI −1.29 to −0.43); shared text preserves both signs. Seeds agree within each regime.

The executed pooled negative was partly a dose artifact: at matched install the contrastive sign turns positive — the direction of the parent line's villain-context read at a quarter its size, under a different context and pooling, not directly comparable — while positive-only stays negative. Residual dose gaps are signed like the verdicts (contrastive +0.25/+2.01 nats above anchor, positive-only −0.76/−0.81 below) — an unruled-out contributor, though the seed-42 pair resists a pure-dose account (gap +0.25, difference +0.60). A matched pair still compares 2e-6 dense training against 5e-6 adapters, the rate mismatch forced by the cliff. Contrastive prompt arms are seed-consistent and amplified (prefix +1.9, context +2.3, response +0.68); positive-only prompt arms sign-split (prefix +0.45 against −2.00), leaving only that regime's response verdict seed-consistent.

Install-normalized marker transfer shows no full-fine-tune excess in the contrastive regime

Bars show each marker cell's install-normalized transfer fraction — pooled non-source end-of-turn-margin shift divided by the source-context shift — per method, regime, and seed.

Install-normalized marker transfer fractions for all 8 marker cells

Figure. Contrastive transfer fractions run 0.60–0.62 under full fine-tuning versus 0.75–0.77 under LoRA; positive-only tilts the other way (0.77–0.81 versus 0.73–0.79). All four pairs are dose-mismatched, so every fraction is descriptive only.

Per installed nat, contrastive full fine-tuning transfers no more than LoRA — the fraction runs lower, and the deconfound round's matched arms reproduce the ordering (contrastive margin-space fractions 0.62/0.68 under full fine-tuning against 0.755/0.755 under LoRA; positive-only overlaps, 0.73/0.75 against 0.69/0.80). The positive-only excess here is small, seed-inconsistent, and dose-confounded, so it carries no method claim. Per-context three-space reads: supplementary panel, linked deliberately.

Marker leakage at matched install shows no consistent full-fine-tune excess

The forest plots the paired difference in pooled non-source end-of-turn-margin shift (left) and log-prob shift (right), full fine-tune minus LoRA, per seed and pooled per regime, both sides read fresh on this pod; question-cluster bootstrap CIs, 2,000 draws; the open square marks the dose-mismatched contrastive seed-137 pair.

Marker leakage differences at matched install in margin and log-prob space

Figure. Positive-only leaks more under LoRA in both spaces (margin −0.49, CI −0.67 to −0.33); the contrastive pooled margin (+0.10, CI −0.10 to +0.32) spans zero with the seeds split (−0.49 against +0.70). Contrastive log-prob pools at +0.40.

At matched install the marker leakage reads do not consolidate into a full-fine-tune excess. The one pooled positive — contrastive log-prob +0.40 (CI +0.28 to +0.54) — rests on the dose-mismatched seed-137 pair, over-installed by 2.0 nats, whose margin also flips sign against its seed-42 partner; the positive-only regime is consistent the other way in both spaces and both seeds. The signed residual dose gaps align with these verdicts too: the positive-only partners sit −0.76/−0.81 nats below their anchors, so their lower leakage is consistent with residual under-dosing as well as method. The seed split is reported as heterogeneity, not averaged away.

The shift-shape null mostly holds; impolite-contrastive full-fine-tune clouds are more concentrated

The forest plots seed-pooled paired differences in three shape statistics of the 120-row shift cloud at layer 14 (content) / 25 (marker) — rank holding 90% of variance, participation ratio, top-eigenvalue share — per behavior × regime. The forest is pooled-only by design; per-cell shape values with per-cell CIs for all 32 cells are in geometry_per_cell.json.

Pooled shape-statistic differences

Figure. Shape CIs cross zero for sycophancy, positive-only impolite, contrastive casual, and marker; impolite-contrastive full-fine-tune clouds are more concentrated (top share +0.08, CI +0.05 to +0.11), as are casual-positive-only clouds. Rank points — and the casual-positive-only participation-ratio point — can sit outside their CIs (resampling bias).

The standing shape null — both methods move activations equally diffusely — survives for sycophancy, marker, positive-only impolite (top share +0.02, CI −0.01 to +0.05), and contrastive casual. The two exceptions both point toward more concentrated full-fine-tune shifts, the opposite of the weight-space intruder-dimension prior, which expects LoRA to be the concentrated one. Rank statistics inherit a known downward bias under resampling (duplicated rows deflate rank), so the participation-ratio and top-share columns are the more reliable reads.

The method contrast survives the shared-text control

The scatter plots each pair's own-generation paired shift-norm difference against the same pair's difference when every cell is re-captured teacher-forced on the base model's generations (identical text both sides), response arm, layer 14 (content) / 25 (marker).

Own-generation versus shared-text paired differences

Figure. Every pair keeps its sign under shared text; magnitudes compress for sycophancy and casual style, and the impolite-contrastive negative grows (−2.6 pooled shared-text vs −1.9 own-text).

No magnitude verdict is an artifact of the two methods generating different text: with generation differences removed, sycophancy and casual stay positive, impolite-contrastive and marker stay negative. The impolite reversal strengthening under shared text argues it lives in the weights' response to identical inputs, not in response-content drift. An exploratory alignment read where directions exist: impolite shift means align with the impolite extraction direction (cosine 0.49–0.74 against a random band below 0.04) under both methods, while sycophancy contrastive shifts are direction-orthogonal.

The continuous companion tracks the judged rate for sycophancy only

The scatter plots each content arm's teacher-forced fixed-pool margin shift against its source judged rate, per behavior, with the Spearman correlation over the 8 arms.

Margin-versus-rate validation scatter

Figure. Sycophancy's margin tracks its rate (Spearman +0.71, p = 0.047, n = 8); impolite (−0.31) and casual (−0.13) fail the tracking validation, as they did in the parent grid.

Where validated, the companion corroborates the rate story: the dose-matched sycophancy contrastive pair at seed 42 shows near-identical margins (+0.072 vs +0.069), and the under-dosed seed-137 arm shows the expected deficit. Impolite and casual margins are reported descriptively only; no claim rests on them.
