Takeaways

  • Impolite installs shift activations along the behavior's read-out direction: own-text mean-shift cosine 0.51 to 0.80 across all seven design cells versus a 0.037 chance bound; sycophancy read at most 0.20.
  • Own-text rank-k@90 is 43 to 61, 5 to 31 modes below sycophancy's 66 to 74; shared-text re-capture collapses rank to 18 to 29 and alignment to 0.07 to 0.33 — the diffuseness and most of the alignment ride the model's own text.
  • The WildChat signature is lr-robust: re-captured at learning rate 1e-5 and matched install (0.724; step count co-varies), alignment reads 0.53 versus the sibling's 0.51, matched-80 rank 39.3 versus 39.6, shift-direction cosine 0.98; the shift runs 16% shorter, consistent with the small install shortfall.
  • The signature needs no context scaffold: the conditional bare-context cell (design now 7 of 7; lowest install, 0.675) reads mid-spread — alignment 0.68, matched-80 rank 41.4, shared-text rank 21.
  • Full fine-tuning adds no shift distance at like dose (+0.05, 95% CI −0.21 to +0.39, versus sycophancy's +3.24 to +4.50) and its more-concentrated lean is marginal; negatives add distance (+0.87, 95% CI +0.63 to +1.17) but leave shape and direction unchanged (no rotation resolves, where sycophancy's was small but genuine).
  • Single seed; two reused ICL parity probes read 0.59 and 0.56 versus committed 0.82 and 0.775 (labeled below-band); CJK intrusion in the judged pools makes the persona, both WildChat (3e-5 and 1e-5), and bare parity PASS labels convention-dependent.

Goal

This experiment in context: The parent experiment #1112 found sycophancy installs produce a diffuse residual-stream activation shift (rank-k@90 66–74 on 120-row clouds) that is unaligned with the behavior's read-out direction, indistinguishable in spectral shape between LoRA and full fine-tuning, and 1.6–2.2 times farther under full fine-tuning at matched install; the diffuseness largely reflected measuring on each model's own generations. This experiment re-runs the same measurement pipeline on a second behavior — the impolite organisms from #1090 (persona-context and WildChat-context LoRA at learning rate 3e-5, ICL-context LoRA at 1e-5), plus two newly trained full-fine-tune cells on the frozen ICL mixes — to test whether the sycophancy geometry signature is behavior-general or behavior-specific. Comparison anchors come from #1112 and #653.

Broader narrative: The geometry-of-trained-shifts line asks which training-recipe and behavior properties are recoverable from residual-stream activation space — bounding what activation-space predictors of install and leakage can see. A signature that flips between behaviors means geometry reads must be calibrated per behavior — there is no universal fine-tuning fingerprint.

Methodology

(Conciseness note: the v4 prose caps are exceeded in several result sections and Takeaways bullets, and the total-prose budget is exceeded; the overage is acknowledged — six parent verdict lattices plus the two follow-up rounds' lattices plus cross-behavior anchors and an instrument-intrusion audit do not compress further without dropping registered reads.)

Design: Six impolite cells on Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct, single seed (42), all dosed to (or reused inside) a judged impolite-rate band of 0.60–0.85 over a 0.00 base rate. Four cells are reused LoRA organisms produced by the parent organism-factory experiment (persona context at learning rate 3e-5; WildChat two-turn conversation context at 3e-5; ICL context with contrastive negatives and positives-only, both at 1e-5); two are NEW full fine-tunes trained here on the same frozen ICL mixes (with negatives / positives-only), completing a {LoRA, full fine-tune} × {negatives, positives-only} square at the ICL context. A seventh, conditional bare-context impolite LoRA cell was registered to join only if the parent factory's bare organism had a band-hit confirmation read and a Hub-resolved adapter at capture launch; neither existed at the parent run, so the parent proceeded with the six cells above. The second follow-up round completed it once the factory's bare organism landed — reused at its band-selected checkpoint 20 (Tier-1 0.60 at the band's lower edge, so in-band with no below-band label under the labeled-inclusion convention; Tier-2 confirm 0.675, which sits 0.049–0.145 below the six scaffolded siblings' 0.724–0.820) — closing the registered design at 7 of 7 cells. The ICL context is itself a trained context — an in-context-learning prefix from the organism factory's training mixes, not a prompt-only context — so every ICL-anchored contrast compares methods on a context the organisms saw in training. The geometry object is the per-row activation-shift cloud: trained-model minus base-model span-mean residual activations on the same rows, at all 28 decoder layers, in three pooling spans — prefix (all tokens before the final user message), context (prefix plus query), response (the model's own greedy generation) — per the standing prefix-and-context mapping rule. Capture panel per cell: the cell's source context plus the 5-member training negative panel (including the default assistant) × 20 held-out questions = 120 rows; the base pass captures the 8-context union panel (160 rows) once. A shared-text control re-captures every cell's response arm teacher-forced on the same 120 base-model generations. Registered primary read: layer 14, response arm, paired cluster bootstrap (n_boot 1000; 2000 for mean-shift-norm differences; seed 653), with verdict lattices registered in the plan for diffuseness, shared-text collapse, read-out alignment, method shape, method magnitude, and negatives shape. A same-issue follow-up round added one paired capture cell: the organism factory's WildChat-context organism retrained at learning rate 1e-5, reused at its band-selected checkpoint 20 (Tier-2 install 0.724 — inside the 0.60–0.85 band, 0.013 below the siblings' realized 0.737–0.820 spread), captured on the identical 120-row WildChat panel and contrasted with the 3e-5 WildChat cell under its own registered four-read verdict lattice plus a registered paired layer-14 contrast (rank and mean-shift norm; identical resample indices, mean-shift-norm draws at n_boot 2000). The contrast is a recipe-robustness read at matched install — lr at matched install (step count co-varies): checkpoint 20 versus checkpoint 10 under the dose-to-band convention — never an lr-only contrast. The second follow-up round's bare cell varies ONE thing versus the measured lr-3e-5 cells: the training/capture context (bare default assistant versus persona/WildChat scaffold) — same learning rate (3e-5), same recipe (r 32 / alpha 64, rsLoRA, 7 projection modules, config-verified at the pin), same band, same contrastive datagen family; the per-context training mix necessarily co-varies with the context (each cell trains on its own context's mix — the standing cross-context convention), selection step co-varies by the dose-to-band convention (20 versus 30/10/8), and the bare cell's training negatives panel is the source-filtered 4-member panel (the content-identical default-assistant negative is dropped — structurally forced by the disjointness invariant) where the scaffolded cells trained against the 5-member default panel — a necessary co-variate of the context change. Because the bare cell's own context is content-identical to the default-assistant panel member, its capture panel dedupes to 5 contexts × 20 questions = 100 rows (the default-assistant rows are its own-context rows); raw-n DVs at n=100 are not mechanically comparable to the scaffolded cells' 120-row values, so the matched-80-row battery carries the rank verdict, and the bare cloud's own-context rows are 20 of 100 (20%) versus 20 of 120 (16.7%) for scaffolded cells — the matched-80 battery matches n, not composition. The bare cell registers no paired contrast (it shares no source context with any measured cell); its reads are descriptive point estimates against the scaffolded cells' realized spread. The shared pool sha the factory rounds have in common is the teacher-forced margin instrument's fixed completion pools, not the training mixes.

Training: Two full-fine-tune cells trained here; the four LoRA cells are reused artifacts whose production recipe is reproduced inline. Values copied from plan §4.4, src/explore_persona_space/experiments/issue_1315/__init__.py and issue_1112 constants at the Code SHA, and the organism factory's committed recipe (recipe.py UNIFIED_OVERRIDES, mix_meta.json). The reused training mixes' completion provenance and data-realism tiers are inherited from the organism factory unchanged: positives are Claude-generated (the factory's instruct-and-strip datagen, judge-filtered at graded score above 50 — tier-3 LLM-generated synthetic data), contrastive negatives are on-policy base-model completions under the panel contexts, the ICL two-shot demonstration blocks are authored templates (tier-4), and the WildChat conversation prefixes are real user conversations (tier-1). Reusing the frozen mixes is what holds the data variable fixed across the method contrast; the LLM-generated-data realism caveat carries into this experiment's scope.

Evaluation: Geometry DVs per (cell, dose, layer, arm): row-centered SVD spectrum of the 120-row shift cloud — rank-k@90, participation ratio, top-eigenvalue share — plus mean-shift norm, cosine of the mean shift and top mode to the impolite read-out direction against a norm-matched random-cosine 97.5% bound, cross-cell mean-shift cosines and linear CKA, paired cluster-bootstrap CIs (identical resample indices per paired contrast), and paired subsample-without-replacement half-draw direction CIs (m = 60 of 120, 2000 draws, seed 1112) with same-cell split-half attenuation references. All questions come from the 40-question impolite_neutral_v1 bank, split 20/20: the capture panel and every judged install read use the 20-question held-out eval half; the read-out direction uses the other, disjoint 20-question extraction half (0-overlap asserted at run time). The read-out direction was extracted fresh on the base model per the persona-vectors recipe (read-out regime, all 28 layers): 5 contrastive instruction pairs × the 20 extraction questions × 10 rollouts per arm at temp 1.0, judge-filtered (766/1000 positive-arm rollouts kept, 1000/1000 negative-arm, 0 judge-draw drops), response-averaged diff-of-means. Install control: graded 0–100 judge (claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929, reason-then-score, max_tokens 300, threshold 50, drop-never-coerce, Batch API), plus a teacher-forced fixed-pool margin companion (23 impolite / 25 non-impolite completions, sha-pinned pools). Judged rates are the matched-install CONTROL instrument; no behavioral claim rides on geometry DVs.

Data extraction: Capture ran on pod-1315 (scripts/issue1315_dispatch.py): bf16 forwards, spans from the full render's offset mapping, three pooled spans per row at all 28 post-block residual layers. One negative-panel context — the query-rephrase member, which wraps each question as "I'm curious about the following: …" with no system prompt — has its prefix boundary on a BPE merge seam; the run snap-handles it (prefix-boundary straddler excluded) with per-row span_seam provenance — 20 of 120 rows per pass, prefix arm only (span_seam_counts = 100 exact / 20 prefix / 0 context per cell pass; base 140/20/0; the bare cell's deduped 100-row panel 80/20/0); response- and context-arm reads are unaffected by construction. The geometry aggregation ran VM-side (scripts/issue1315_geometry.py): the base union-panel store is subset per cell panel (row keys matched by context and question id), then the parent sycophancy experiment's aggregation rig (experiments/issue_1112/geometry.py) runs verbatim per panel group; the shared-text tree passes the plan's prompt-arm parity kill gate first (median per-row cosine 1.0 in all 6 cells, bar 0.99). A programmatic CJK character-class audit over the greedy capture rollouts — the geometry substrate — found near-zero intrusion (worst selected-checkpoint cell 2 of 120 rows; worst pass overall 4 of 120, an overtrained capture; mean CJK character fraction at most 0.2%). The temperature-1.0 judged install pools carry substantially more intrusion; per-pool counts and sensitivity bounds are reported with the install results. The follow-up round's lr-1e-5 WildChat cell repeats the pattern: its greedy capture rollouts are clean (0 of 120 rows) while its parity pool carries 11 of 100 intruded completions (10 judged-impolite) — the parity PASS (0.63 as scored, floor 0.57) holds under intrusion-exclusion (0.59) but flips under intrusion-zeroing (0.53), convention-dependent like the parent's WildChat probe (audit: eval_results/issue_1315/lr1e5_followup/geometry/cjk_intrusion_audit_lr1e5.json; the reused Tier-2 value is the factory's committed selection, not re-scanned this round). The second round's bare cell repeats the pattern with no WildChat prefix in the context at all: greedy capture clean (0 of 100 rows) while its parity pool carries 10 of 100 intruded completions (9 judged-impolite; all 300 judge draws parsed, 0 censored) — the parity PASS (0.60 as scored, floor 0.525) holds under intrusion-exclusion (0.57) but flips under intrusion-zeroing (0.51), so the intrusion rides temperature-1.0 sampling, not the prompt prefix (audit: eval_results/issue_1315/bare_followup/geometry/cjk_intrusion_audit_bare.json).

Both full-fine-tune ladders enter the install band; two reused ICL probes read below their committed rates

Judged impolite rate per checkpoint rung for the two newly trained full-fine-tune cells (Tier-1 instrument: 5 completions × 3 judge draws × 20 questions at temperature 1.0), the 0.60–0.85 target band shaded, stars at the selected rungs.

Install ladders for the two full fine-tune impolite cells with the 0.60 to 0.85 band shaded

Figure. Both ladders express at step 4. The negatives cell enters the band at step 4 (0.75); the positives-only cell overshoots (0.96 at step 4) and first re-enters at step 18 (0.83), 4.5 times the negatives cell's optimizer-step dose.

Tier-2 confirms 0.72 and 0.84 over a 0.00 base (144/200 and 168/200 judged completions); the fixed-pool margin companion moves +0.71 and +0.77 in the same direction. All four reused organisms pass the adapter-application check (2.47–5.98 nats over the 0.5-nat floor), but the two ICL parity probes read 0.59 and 0.56 against committed 0.82 and 0.775 — outside the ±0.15 window, above the 0.45 inclusion floor, so they enter as labeled below-band cells. Re-judging all 827 transport-dropped judge draws with the run's own instrument moved no pool rate by more than 0.011 and flipped no verdict. The install imbalance favors the full-fine-tune cells — conservative for the magnitude null below (more dose adds shift norm), anti-conservative for the concentration contrast (more dose lowers rank).

CJK intrusion in the judged pools spares the install headline but makes two parity PASS labels convention-dependent

Judged impolite rate per install pool under three conventions — as scored; intruded rows scored non-impolite (zeroed bound); intruded rows excluded — with each pool's pass floor dashed and the 0.60–0.85 band shaded.

Judged impolite rate per pool under three CJK-intrusion conventions with pass floors marked

Figure. The zeroed bound flips both non-ICL parity PASSes. Persona drops 0.77 to 0.64 (floor 0.655), WildChat 0.67 to 0.56 (floor 0.587); excluding intruded rows restores both (0.78, 0.67). Both Tier-2 cells stay in band under either convention (0.695, 0.740).

A CJK character-class scan of the temperature-1.0 judged pools (the same class as the capture audit) finds 18 of 100 persona parity completions intruded (13 judged-impolite), 16 of 100 WildChat (10), 4 and 1 of 100 for the ICL pair, and 5 and 23 of 200 at Tier-2. The full-fine-tune install headline survives: zeroing every intruded firing row keeps both cells in band. The persona and WildChat parity PASSes are not — they hold when intruded rows are excluded but fail when those rows are scored non-impolite, so the two labels are convention-dependent, a caveat on the reused-organism install-control instrument only. The geometry substrate is unaffected: capture is greedy, and its worst selected cell has 2 of 120 rows intruded.

Own-text impolite shifts are less diffuse than sycophancy's, and shared text collapses them the same way

Rank-k@90 of each cell's 120-row shift cloud at every decoder layer, response arm, selected checkpoints: left the model's own generations, right the teacher-forced shared-text control (the same 120 base generations under every cell), with the parent sycophancy spans shaded gray and its predecessor's 80-row span orange.

Rank profiles across 28 layers for six impolite cells, own text versus shared text, with sycophancy reference bands

Figure. Every impolite curve sits below the sycophancy own-text band. At layer 14 own-text rank reads 43–61 (sycophancy: 66–74); shared text collapses all six cells to 18–29 (sycophancy: 27–35). The orange span is a different cloud size — matched-n values in the text.

The registered diffuseness read still lands diffuse — the smallest reused-cell rank (46) clears the 40-mode bar, far from the calibrated low-rank exemplar (10 modes or fewer) — but the cross-behavior gap is systematic: at matched 80-row clouds the impolite cells read 30.6–44.2 where the sycophancy behavior cells read 48.2–50.1. The shared-text collapse verdict matches sycophancy (all four reused cells at or below 29). Impolite installs are measurably more concentrated through the mid-stack on both text regimes; at layer 0 the shared-text curves overlap the sycophancy range (up to 52 versus 45–52), so the gap is confined to the mid-stack.

The concentration difference is visible in the raw spectra

Cumulative eigenvalue share versus number of modes at layer 14 (response arm, own text, selected checkpoints); the 90% crossing defines rank-k@90.

Cumulative eigenvalue share versus modes at layer 14 for six impolite cells

Figure. The top mode alone carries 15–36% of variance. Crossings sit at 43–61 modes; the sycophancy spectra crossed at 66–74 with top-share at most 0.14.

The per-row clouds behind these spectra, below, show the leading modes separate the panel contexts (default-assistant rows split from the rest in the ICL cells), so the concentrated structure is context-organized, not a single outlier row.

Top-2 principal-component scatter of each cell's per-row shift cloud, points colored by context

The shift points along the impolite read-out direction on own text; most of that alignment is text identity

Absolute cosine between the per-layer mean shift (left panel) or top shift mode (right panel) and the fresh impolite read-out direction, own-text response arm, all six cells, against the norm-matched random-cosine 97.5% bound.

Alignment of mean shift and top mode to the impolite read-out direction across 28 layers

Figure. Alignment clears the chance bound at every layer except the last. At layer 14 the mean-shift cosine reads 0.51–0.80 (chance bound 0.037); the registered count read is 4 of 4 reused cells above the bound. At layer 27 the curves collapse to near or below the bound.

The matched sycophancy read was at most 0.20, and the registered above-bound count does not separate the behaviors — 3 of 4 sycophancy cells also cleared their 0.039 bound — so the break rests on magnitude: 0.51–0.80 against at most 0.20. The shared-text control cuts the alignment to 0.07–0.33 — above chance in every cell but a fraction of the own-text value — and the same-token prefix/context arms read 0.16–0.27. Most of the measured alignment comes from the model actually generating rude text. The surviving component is small but real, and it also separates the behaviors: sycophancy's shared-text alignment collapsed to −0.04 to +0.01 at layer 14, at or inside its chance bound, where impolite's stays 1.9 to 8.7 times above.

Full fine-tuning changes neither shift distance nor direction at like dose; negatives add distance but leave shape and direction unchanged

Registered paired contrasts at layer 14, response arm (paired cluster bootstrap, identical resample indices): rank difference left, mean-shift-norm difference right; gray marks the parent sycophancy values.

Paired cross-cell contrasts for method and negatives with 95% CIs and sycophancy references

Figure. The method magnitude effect is null where sycophancy's was +3.24. Full fine-tune minus LoRA: rank −4 (95% CI −4 to −1), norm +0.05 (95% CI −0.21 to +0.39). Negatives (LoRA pair): rank +1 (95% CI −1 to +3), norm +0.87 (95% CI +0.63 to +1.17). The full-fine-tune-corner bar is descriptive — its point sits outside the resampled CI because resampling deflates rank.

The magnitude null holds across layers (26 of 28 CIs include zero) and reverses at layer 27 (−4.67, 95% CI −6.08 to −3.08 — LoRA farther), against sycophancy's every-layer full-fine-tune surplus; the below-band LoRA cell makes this null conservative, since more dose adds norm. Negatives add shift distance (+0.87, 95% CI +0.63 to +1.17) — the parent's negatives mix also carried the larger norm, 5.19 versus 3.72 — but leave shape alone (+1 mode). Direction: neither the method pair's mean-shift cosine (0.961) nor the LoRA negatives pair's (0.951) falls below the same-cell noise reference in any of 2000 paired half-draws — where sycophancy's negatives rotation was small but genuine. The positives-only full-fine-tune corner does differ (cosine 0.710; its top-mode read-out projection flips sign, +0.82 versus −0.4 to −0.9 elsewhere), but its 18-step dose confounds that read.

The more-concentrated lean under full fine-tuning is marginal: dose-matched reads land on sycophancy's value

Figure. Rank falls as realized install rises. The full-fine-tune + negatives cell reads rank 43 at rate 0.72; its LoRA counterpart reads 47 at 0.59. The dose bracket (not shown) reads 61, 47, 46 at steps 4, 8, 14 with mean-shift norms 0.95 to 4.08.

The registered rank contrast, −4 (95% CI −4 to −1), technically excludes zero where sycophancy's −3 (95% CI −5 to +1) did not — but the points sit one mode apart with overlapping intervals: a branch flip driven by interval width, not a demonstrated cross-behavior difference. The install imbalance biases the read toward concentration — within this run's own dose bracket more dose lowers rank, so an install-matched LoRA read would sit lower — and the closest dose-matched comparison available (full fine-tune 43 versus the step-14 LoRA capture at 46) lands at −3, sycophancy's point value. I count the shape read as marginal, not a break.

Same-token mapping arms carry a low-rank shift, as in sycophancy

Rank-k@90 per layer for the two same-token prompt arms (prefix: everything before the final user message; context: prefix plus query), own capture, selected checkpoints.

Prefix and context arm rank profiles across 28 layers for six impolite cells

Figure. Same-token shifts are rank 1–7 through the mid-stack. The prefix arm stays at 1–4 across layers; the context arm sits at 1–7 from layer 2 through layer 14 (sycophancy: 4–13), spikes to 28–31 at layer 0 in the ICL LoRA cells, and rises late for the persona (19) and WildChat (13) cells.

The prefix arm carries the run's one measurement deviation: one panel context (the query-rephrase panel member) sits on a BPE merge seam, snap-handled with per-row provenance (20 of 120 rows per pass, prefix arm only). Recomputing the layer-14 prefix-arm spectrum without that context leaves every cell's rank unchanged (2–3 with and without), so no read depends on the seam handling; response- and context-arm spans never touched the seam.

The WildChat cell's geometry signature survives a three-times-lower learning rate at matched install

The four registered layer-14 reads of the paired learning-rate contrast — the reused lr-1e-5 WildChat LoRA (checkpoint 20) against the parent's 3e-5 cell (checkpoint 10), response arm: read-out alignment, matched-80-row rank, shared-text rank, and paired differences with 95% cluster-bootstrap CIs.

Four-panel learning-rate contrast at layer 14 with registered bars and sycophancy references

Figure. All four reads land on the confirm side. Alignment 0.526 versus 0.509 (bar 0.5, ceiling 0.2); matched-80 rank 39.25 ± 1.15 versus 39.61 ± 1.16 (band 48–50); shared-text rank 22 for both (bar 30); paired differences — rank −1 (95% CI −3 to +2), participation ratio −2.85 (−5.45 to +1.04), top-share +3.9 points (−0.8 to +9.0).

The registered verdict lattice resolves LrRobustConfirmed, none of the four reads near-bar: the signature reproduces at a three-times-lower learning rate at matched install, shift direction near-identical (mean-shift cosine 0.984, CKA 0.720), and the three paired shape contrasts — rank, participation ratio, top-share — indistinguishable from zero given the variance (the registered magnitude contrast does move; next section). The read is lr at matched install (step count co-varies); realized install (Tier-2 0.724, parity 0.63 versus floor 0.57) sits 0.013 below the siblings' spread; n is 1 run per lr arm — a positive-branch read, strengthened by the joint (lr, step) change. The parity probe shares the parent probes' CJK convention-dependence (counts under Data extraction); the capture substrate is clean (0 of 120 rows).

The lr-1e-5 shift is shorter at every layer, in line with its slightly lower realized install

Per-layer own-text response-arm profiles for both learning-rate cells — rank-k@90, read-out alignment, and mean-shift norm across all 28 decoder layers — behind the layer-14 reads above.

Per-layer rank, alignment, and mean-shift norm overlay for the two learning-rate cells

Figure. Rank and alignment profiles are near-identical; the norm curve sits uniformly lower at lr 1e-5. Layer 14: rank 53 versus 54, alignment 0.526 versus 0.509, norm 7.09 versus 8.42. The registered paired norm difference at layer 14 is −1.33 (95% CI −1.78 to −0.83; cluster bootstrap, 2000 draws, identical resample indices).

The one read that moves under the lr change is magnitude: the lr-1e-5 shift is 16% shorter at layer 14 and shorter at all 28 layers (every paired CI below zero). I weigh this toward the install shortfall rather than lr itself — realized install sits 0.013 below the siblings' spread, and within this run's dose bracket more dose adds shift norm — with the joint (lr, step) change as the residual alternative. The magnitude contrast is a registered supporting read; no verdict-lattice input takes it, so the lr-robust verdict is unaffected.

The impolite signature needs no context scaffold: the bare-context cell completes the registered design reading mid-spread

The second follow-up round's registered layer-14 reads — the bare-context LoRA (checkpoint 20, no scaffold) against the seven scaffolded cells' spread, response arm: read-out alignment, matched-80-row rank, shared-text rank.

Bare cell versus scaffolded spread at layer 14

Figure. The bare star sits mid-spread on all three panels. Alignment 0.676 (scaffolded 0.509–0.796; bar 0.5); matched-80 rank 41.4 ± 0.69 (scaffolded 30.58–44.18; band 48–50); shared-text rank 21 (scaffolded 18–29; bar 30). Raw own-text rank 49 at n=100 is not comparable to the n=120 values.

Per-layer profiles against the scaffolded envelope:

Per-layer bare-cell profiles against the scaffolded envelope

Figure. The bare profiles sit inside or at the top of the scaffolded envelope. Own-text response arm, all 28 layers: rank inside the envelope at every layer; alignment inside or above its upper edge (above at 4 of 28 layers); shift norm inside or above (above at 11 of 28). Bare n=100 versus scaffolded n=120.

The registered lattice resolves ScaffoldFreeConfirmed, none of the four reads near-bar (shared rank 9 below bar; matched-80 adjudication not triggered): the concentrated, read-out-aligned impolite signature does not require a trained context scaffold, and the registered design is complete at 7 of 7 cells. The one varied thing is the training/capture context (mix, step, negatives panel co-vary — Methodology); the install shortfall (0.675 versus 0.724–0.820) biases against confirmation, making the read conservative. Despite that lowest install the bare cell out-aligns the weakest scaffolded cells (0.676; top-mode 0.821), and its layer-14 norm (12.02) sits above every scaffolded cell's (2.67–11.53) — a different 5-context n=100 cloud; round 1's install-norm weighing was a paired same-context read, which this cross-context comparison does not contradict: context composition dominates norm across cells.
