Takeaways

  • At matched install the positive-only minus contrastive leakage gap is +0.184 (casual, bare), +0.091 (impolite, bare), +0.036 (sycophancy, prefix contexts); n ≈ 1000 per arm.
  • Only impolite's containment generalizes past the trained negatives: held-out-only +0.087 vs pooled +0.091; casual's bare-context margin is ~70% trained-negative suppression (held-out +0.053).
  • Sycophancy's +0.036 gap is not cluster-robust: a question-and-seed cluster re-read spans zero, and its matched cells' residual dose gaps all run positive-only-hotter.
  • Marker: raw gap positive in all 8 cells but transfer fractions regime-flat in bare/persona (residual dose); matched-install interpolation gives the WildChat prefix a genuine advantage (+0.08 to +0.42).
  • Dose-matched coverage shrank to 1 of 4 contexts (casual, impolite) and 2 of 4 (sycophancy); the impolite bare match flips at both seeds when intruded rows are zeroed.
  • The margin companion failed validation for casual and impolite (rate-only claims); sycophancy passes. Intrusion recounts leave all three leakage gaps intact; the 3-of-4-context criteria stay non-evaluable.

Goal

  • This experiment in context: This experiment completes the organism-factory grid from #1090 so every (behavior, training-context) cell carries a contrastive and a positive-only adapter at ONE recipe, then reads the contrastive-vs-positive-only leakage contrast at matched install — the install-controlled adjudication #627 argued is the only interpretable version (its sycophancy gap shrank roughly 7–10× at matched install, under a different rig — wrong-fact claims, a 24-persona panel, a legacy judge — so direction prior only, not directly comparable). It extends #1434's casual-style contrast (whose method it inherits) to impolite, sycophancy, and the marker, adds a second seed grid-wide, and brings the marker recipe from #1333 onto the four factory contexts with contrastive/positive-only pairs.
  • Broader narrative: Contrastive negatives are the project's default containment lever for behavior implantation. The open question this grid serves: is the apparent containment genuine selectivity, or a dose artifact (negatives changing install strength rather than leakage per unit install)? The answer calibrates every training-mix decision the leakage program makes.

Methodology

  • Design: 4 behaviors (casual style, impolite, sycophancy via Claude-data neutral subjective-stance bank, marker token ※) × 4 training contexts (persona software_engineer, bare default assistant, WildChat two-turn real prefix, two-shot ICL prefix) × 2 regimes (contrastive with the 5-member factory negative panel vs positive-only with the panel removed) × 3-LR ladder × 2 seeds {42, 137} = 192 LoRA cells (156 freshly trained; 24 casual seed-42 cells and 12 impolite/sycophancy reference arms reused — provenance in the footer). The single manipulated variable per pair is the presence of the contrastive negative panel in the training mix; the positive-only arm is the deliberate no-negatives control. Per (behavior, context, regime, seed) a verdict arm is selected at matched install (content: earliest rung whose judged install rate enters the 0.60–0.85 band at the lowest in-band LR, else closest approach; marker: earliest rung whose install gain enters a 5–12-nat window passing de-saturation gates). Leakage is read at the verdict arms over a six-context panel; the regime contrast is D = positive-only minus contrastive pooled non-source judged rate (trained-vs-trained, so base propensity cancels). A pair is dose-matched when both arms are in band and their selection rates differ by at most 0.10 (marker: both in the 5–12-nat window, install gains within 1.5 nats).

  • Evaluation: Content primary DV = judged install/leakage rate: on-policy completions scored 0–100 by the one project judge (mean over kept draws, positive if above 50); malformed/refusal draws dropped, never coerced (content drops ≈ 2–3% of draws; transport losses ≤ 3 of 9,600 per behavior; worst single pool 32% item drops on one casual ICL 1e-4 arm, which is dose-unmatched anyway). Rubrics per behavior: casual = the persona-vectors writing-style trait rubric; impolite/sycophancy = the factory graded rubrics; sha-pinned, identical across regimes within behavior — cross-behavior gap magnitudes are therefore instrument-confounded and aggregated by sign only. Secondary continuous DV = teacher-forced fixed-pool margin, subject to the standing correlation-with-rate validation per behavior (results below; casual and impolite fail, so their claims are rate-only). Marker DV = on-policy log P(marker) at the end of the model's own response, trained minus base, four floats per slot (log-prob primary, marker logit + end-of-turn margin secondary, probability sanity), plus free-emission rates; install-normalized transfer fraction = pooled non-source over source gain in end-of-turn-margin space. Content contrast intervals: Newcombe 95% on the seed-pooled rate difference (shown as error bars in figures); borderline sycophancy verdicts additionally get a paired question-cluster + seed-cluster bootstrap (2000 draws) from per-completion labels. Marker contrast intervals: question-cluster bootstrap (2000 draws). Language-intrusion audit: a CJK scan over all 270 panel/base pools (28,200 completions; 1,642 intruded, 5.8%, max 24 of 100 in one pool) with exact per-item recounts of the three headline gaps under both zeroed (intruded rows forced non-positive) and excluded (intruded rows dropped) conventions — all three survive; the casual seed-42 leg uses the sibling round's committed per-item audit labels (cross-pass, ±3 per-context judge-draw variation). Reuse gates: apply-and-read parity on the 12 reused reference arms (all 12 within 0.09 of committed rates, threshold 0.15); two committed-in-band arms re-read out of band and triggered the planned single-cell ladder regenerations (both returned non-verdict arms, so no verdict changed). Tier-1 selection-pool intrusion recount (zero-GPU follow-up round): 264 of 3,968 scored Tier-1 completions carry CJK script (6.7%); recomputing selection rates at the verdict rungs under the zeroed and excluded conventions flips 16 in-band / dose-match labels, all intrusion-driven — zeroing loses the dose-match at casual bare (seed 137), impolite bare (both seeds), impolite WildChat (seed 137), and sycophancy persona (seed 42), and gains it at impolite persona and impolite ICL (seed 42); exclusion loses casual persona (seed 137), impolite bare (seed 42), and sycophancy persona (seed 42). The committed labels keep the raw convention as the headline (the selection rule the plan fixed in advance); the recount is a sensitivity read. Scope: only the selected rung is recomputed (the earliest-in-band / lowest-LR selection rule is not re-run over full ladders under the conventions), and 8 casual seed-42 arms carry their sibling-round manifest labels (that pass's Tier-1 pools are not in this run's records). Planned checks that did not run (scope gaps): (1) the reused casual-adapter apply-and-read parity probe (constants defined, never executed); (2) the 10 nearest-dose sensitivity panels (selected in the manifest, incl. exact-rate matches for both bare headline cells, never panel-run); (3) ladder re-selection under the intrusion-recount conventions (the selected-rung recount above ran; full-ladder re-selection did not); (4) the sycophancy secondary opinion-agreement rubric re-read.
  • Data extraction: Contrastive mixes: 80 rows = 20 behavior-positive completions (third-party-LLM-written by the Claude generator under instruct-and-strip — the factory's standing data-realism caveat) + 20 on-policy contrastive negatives (same questions under the 5-member negative panel: police officer, PersonaHub maritime-medic, curious-rephrase user-wrap, technical-support short-form, default assistant; bare cells drop the default member since it is the source) + 40 generic-corpus rows; frozen and sha-pinned from the factory line. Positive-only mixes: 60 rows derived deterministically from each cell's contrastive mix (same 20 positives, same 40 generic, negatives dropped; build asserts 60 = 20 + 40 and po ⊂ con on all 60 rows) — this shifts the generic fraction 0.50 → 0.67 and positive-example passes ≈15 → ≈20 at the matched optimizer schedule, a rider carried on all install-strength attributions. Marker mixes: 1000 rows = 200 positives (10 training questions × 20 repeats; greedy base response under the cell context with ※ appended at the end slot) + 800 on-policy panel negatives (200:800, the marker-line ratio; the appended token is the programmatic carve-out); training questions disjoint from the 20-question eval bank. WildChat prefix: real two-turn conversation prefix (tier-1); ICL prefix: authored two-shot demonstration block (tier-4 anchor). Six-context read panel: persona, bare default, WildChat prefix, behavior-specific ICL prefix, police-officer persona, maritime-medic persona — in contrastive arms 2–3 of the 5 non-source read contexts are trained negatives, so a held-out-only decomposition (per-cell read contexts disjoint from the realized training panel, asserted mechanically) is reported alongside every pooled read.

Results

At matched install, the leakage gap favors contrastive in all three behaviors — but on 1–2 matched contexts each

What is plotted: forest of D = positive-only minus contrastive pooled non-source judged rate (left, per behavior × training context, n ≈ 1000 completions/arm, Newcombe 95% error bars) and marker D in nats (right, per context, question-cluster bootstrap error bars); blue = dose-matched, orange = dose-unmatched; diamonds mark seed-sign discordance.

Forest of the regime contrast at matched install across behaviors and contexts, dose-match color-coded

Figure. Containment survives dose-matching only in a minority of cells. Casual bare +0.184 and impolite bare +0.091 are the dose-matched content survivors; sycophancy's matched prefix contexts sit near zero (+0.036 pooled). Persona/ICL columns are mostly dose-unmatched (orange). Marker D is positive in all four contexts (right).

The 3-of-4-dose-matched-contexts decision criterion is not evaluable: realized dose-matched denominators are 1 (casual), 1 (impolite), 2 (sycophancy) of 4. Intrusion recounts leave the leakage gaps intact (impolite zeroed +0.082, sycophancy +0.035, casual +0.182), but the dose-match LABELS are convention-sensitive: zeroing intruded Tier-1 rows drops the impolite bare match at both seeds (exclusion at one, while gaining impolite persona seed 42), and casual bare at seed 137 — sycophancy's matched cells are unaffected. The nearest-dose sensitivity panels never ran, so residual in-band dose is bounded by argument, not measurement.

Per-cell raw gaps: containment concentrates in bare and persona contexts; prefix contexts are null-to-reversed

What is plotted: every per-read-context D per behavior × training context (dots; blue = trained-negative read contexts, pink = held-out read contexts) and per-seed pooled D (orange crosses) — the per-unit data behind the forest above; positive = positive-only leaks more.

Per-context and per-seed raw D points for the three content behaviors, dot classes legended

Figure. The gap is context-structured, not uniform. Bare and persona training cells sit mostly positive; WildChat-prefix cells straddle zero; casual ICL is reversed (−0.104 pooled, dose-unmatched) while impolite ICL is positive (+0.235, dose-unmatched).

Seeds agree in sign in 11 of 12 content cells (the exception: sycophancy persona, −0.057 vs +0.134). One dose-unmatched cell is direction-conservative and worth weight: impolite ICL selected the contrastive arm HOTTER in both seeds (0.92 vs 0.89; 0.88 vs 0.80) yet the hotter arm still leaks far less — held-out-only gap +0.262, contrastive absolute leakage 5 of 399 completions vs 110 of 400 positive-only.

Only impolite's containment generalizes: held-out-only decomposition

What is plotted: pooled non-source D (blue) vs held-out-only D (orange — read contexts disjoint from the arm's realized training panel) per behavior × training context, with 95% error bars; in contrastive arms 2–3 of 5 non-source read contexts are trained negatives.

Pooled versus held-out-only leakage decomposition bars per behavior and context

Figure. Pooled containment overstates generalization for casual. Casual bare drops +0.184 → +0.053 held-out (~70% of the margin sits on trained negatives); impolite bare is unchanged (+0.091 → +0.087); sycophancy's matched contexts are held-out-indistinguishable.

Whether containment generalizes beyond the trained panel is behavior-dependent: impolite yes, casual mostly not (at bare), sycophancy unresolved — the dot-level view of this split is the previous result's blue-vs-pink dots. Counterpoint: in the one seed where the casual persona cell is dose-matched (rate gap 0.04), its held-out-only gap is +0.095 and stays positive — casual's suppression-only pattern is a bare-context result, not a universal.

Sycophancy's margin is band-resolution-limited: residual in-band dose runs positive-only-hotter and a cluster re-read spans zero

What is plotted: verdict-arm install rates per training context, both regimes × both seeds, with the 0.60–0.85 selection band shaded; bar height = judged install rate at the selected checkpoint.

Sycophancy verdict-arm install rates by context and regime with the selection band shaded

Figure. Positive-only installs at or above contrastive nearly everywhere. In sycophancy's dose-matched cells the residual within-band gaps (+0.03 to +0.09) all run positive-only-hotter; bare's gaps (+0.16/+0.17) exceed the 0.10 tolerance outright.

A leakage-transfer argument predicts +0.02–0.03 of the +0.036 sycophancy gap from residual dose alone, and the question+seed cluster bootstrap spans zero — the sycophancy call is fragile. Matched rate is also not matched intensity: at the source, positive-only scores ~11 graded points above contrastive in sycophancy bare (both seeds), persona (seed 137), and ICL (seed 137 — a headline cell), while impolite persona runs the other way (contrastive +8–10). Grid-wide, positive-only's selection rate sits at or above contrastive's in 14 of 24 content seed-cells (10 of 18 excluding ICL); the positive-example-passes rider (≈20 vs ≈15) rides this attribution.

Marker: the raw-nats gap is positive in all 8 cells, but install-normalized transfer is regime-flat outside the WildChat prefix

What is plotted: per (context, seed), each regime's install-normalized transfer fraction at its selected checkpoint — pooled non-source gain divided by source gain — in end-of-turn-margin space (the primary normalization surface) and log-prob space; points labeled by seed.

Marker install-normalized transfer fractions per context and seed, contrastive versus positive-only, in two measurement spaces

Figure. Per unit install, contrastive transfers as much as positive-only in the leaky contexts. Margin-space fractions: bare contrastive 0.84/0.78 vs positive-only 0.75/0.79 (per-seed flip); persona 0.71/0.78 vs 0.76/0.74; WildChat 0.19/0.18 vs 0.24/0.28 (the one contrastive advantage); ICL both ≈ 0. Minor seed-label overlap at the persona column is cosmetic.

The raw-nats gap (bare +1.07 pooled; positive in all 8 cells) coexists with positive-only selecting hotter in 6 of 8 (up to +1.77 nats within tolerance; gap-vs-gap r = 0.63, n = 8, descriptive). Interpolating to exact matched install where the dose curves allow moves the gap UP — WildChat-prefix seed 42 +0.08 → +0.42 (interval now excludes zero: a genuine advantage), ICL seed 137 +0.28 → +0.29 — while the 6 extrapolation-clamped cells (contrastive install below positive-only's lowest panel rung) likely still overstate positive-only leakage.

Net: bare/persona dissolution stands; the WildChat-prefix advantage is real. Dose-curve companions (marker_dose_curves.png, marker_dose_curves_perq_raw.png, marker_install_trajectories.png) committed at the same pin, not embedded — the transfer-fraction figure is the per-unit view this claim rests on.

Marker free emission turns on earlier in positive-only arms; the highest learning rate is the repeater regime in both

What is plotted: source free-emission rate vs training step per (context × learning rate) cell, contrastive (blue) vs positive-only (orange), both seeds; vertical lines mark selected checkpoints.

Marker free-emission onset map across contexts and learning rates, contrastive versus positive-only

Figure. Emission onset is learning-rate- and context-driven. At 5e-6, onset arrives at steps ~90–140 (positive-only earlier in 6 of 8 low-rate comparisons); at 1e-4 every cell emits by step ~15 (the marker-repeater collapse); ICL cells emit almost immediately at every rate — the in-context demonstrations already carry the marker.

The selective log-prob window and the free-emission window are disjoint at 5e-6 (selected rungs pass 0-of-20-emission gates; onset arrives 10–60 steps later). Degeneration counts now separate "selectivity break" from repeater collapse: selected rungs are clean (truncation 0.1%, degeneracy at most 0.03%); the repeater signature concentrates at emission-onset rungs (truncation 5.7–7.7%, multi-marker 8.6–9.0% by regime) and mostly resolves by the ceiling rungs (multi-marker 1.0–2.6%) — a transient, not a ceiling state. Inventory disclosure: 33 duplicate run-rung panel-file pairs were collapsed latest-pass-wins before counting; each surviving file is a complete 120-response pass.

Dual-DV validation: the margin companion fails for casual and impolite, passes for sycophancy

What is plotted: per behavior, each of 48 arms' teacher-forced fixed-pool margin (x) vs its judged Tier-1 rate (y); the rank correlation in each panel title is the validation gate for using the margin as a companion DV.

Margin versus judged-rate validation scatter per behavior with rank correlations

Figure. Two of three behaviors run on the judged rate alone. Casual: rank correlation −0.38 (p = 0.008, n = 48) — quarantined, replicating the sibling round's negative validation; impolite: −0.18 (p = 0.23) — fails the positive-correlation gate; sycophancy: +0.61 (p < 0.001) — passes.

Casual and impolite claims in this body are therefore single-DV (judged rate); saturation checks ride the graded score distributions and the marker's logit-space reads instead. The planned sycophancy secondary opinion-agreement-rubric re-read on verdict arms did not run (scope gap).

Repro: Compute: 5 wide GCP dispatches (a2-ultragpu-8g) + 2 single-GPU regen instances + a narrow panel phase, ~275 GPU-h booked, run 2026-07-18 → 2026-07-19; judging + analysis VM-only (0 GPU-h, Anthropic Batch API, ~620k draws). Code: run at 8492979e81 (branch issue-1481; scripts/issue1481_{cells,worker,marker,analysis,figures}.py), audit/recount/bootstrap + revised figures at 930460d2d7 (scripts/issue1481_{cjk_audit,borderline_bootstrap,transfer_fraction_fig}.py), hero figure at 0aaf232176. Eval JSONs: eval_results/issue_1481 (regime contrasts, verdict manifest, panel aggregates, margin-rate validation, ladders, cjk_intrusion_scan.json, cjk_recount_headlines.json, syc_borderline_bootstrap.json); free-analysis round at 1e1152dcb9 (tier1_intrusion_recount.json, marker_matched_install_interp.json, emission_degeneration_counts.json, graded_intensity_comparison.json; scripts/issue1481_free_analysis.py). Adapters (model repo, pinned tree): content issue1481/<run_id>/checkpoint-<step> (110 run dirs, full rung cadence) + marker issue1481/marker/<mk_id>/checkpoint-<step> (48 run dirs); destination deviation: plan §10 named the private overflow repo as the rung destination, but the canonical repo absorbed all rung dirs (superior outcome, no loss; overflow prefix empty). Data repo, pinned tree: raw_completions/ (all rounds + panel 40 arms + base_arms + reread/ — reread_summary.json + 12 per-arm parity JSONs), marker/ (48 cells), analysis/judge_packed/ (31,036 judge records, 3 shards + sha manifest), po_mixes/ (8), margin/ (122 arms). WandB: 158/158 trained cells finished — project thomasjiralerspong/issue1481 (158 runs; per-run links n/a — verified fleet-side at upload verification). Prose-budget note: seven results across four behaviors put total body prose over the word-cap budget, and several results sit above the 120-word per-result band; both WARN classes acknowledged. Reused artifacts: casual seed-42 adapters + committed ladders/panels from #1434 (data repo issue1434_writingstyle/, con @ 75b1d5ab / po @ 5b1ed6cb) — same recipe + instrument, seed-concordant with the fresh seed here; 12 impolite/sycophancy reference checkpoints from #1090 fu4/fu5/fu7 (model repo adapters/issue1090_fu{4,5,7}/) — apply-and-read parity within 0.09 on all 12; casual seed-42 intrusion labels from #1434's committed audit (eval_results/issue_1434/writing-style-positive-only-regime/po_intrusion_audit.json) — same committed panels, cross-pass judge draws; marker recipe constants from #1333 — same collator + window machinery.

Context: Originating prompt (2026-07-17, verbatim):

for all the cells rerun so we have both contrastive and positive-only at same recipe. The only behaviors we care about are casual style, impolite, sycophancy, and marker emission (both log prob and actual emission).

Lineage: #1090 — parent, the organism-factory grid this completes. Created 2026-07-17; trained + evaluated 2026-07-18 → 2026-07-19; analysis + audits 2026-07-19; zero-GPU free-analysis follow-up round (Tier-1 recount, marker matched-install interpolation, degeneration + graded-intensity reads) folded 2026-07-19.
