Takeaways

  • Across 84 judged selection-finetune cells on 2 real corpora, learned-screen top-500s (frozen map, trait probe) never beat random and fall below exact-ΔP selection wherever exact finds signal.
  • The paper's prompt-token ΔP, equally generation-free, matches or beats exact-ΔP selection in 5 of 6 cells, and the deciding contrasts replicate at seed 137: 16 of 18 agree in direction, 15 of 18 land inside the seed-42 response-level intervals (16 of 18 under question-clustered intervals), every positive top-versus-random contrast stays positive, and the borderline UltraChat hallucination match moves below exact (−2.2 at seed 42, −4.8 at seed 137).
  • A map refit on each corpus's own 50,000-sample pool rescues the sample-level screen — per-sample correlation with exact ΔP 0.73–0.86 against the frozen map's −0.09 to 0.14, top-500 overlap 0.23–0.57 against at most 0.088 (chance 0.005) — so the frozen map's failure is corpus transfer, not the linear form; the prefix arm refits to R² near 0.
  • On the judged (selection-conditioned) subsets the prefix-side probe difference — effectively the probe's response score — ranks trait-bearing samples best of any screen (AUC 0.64–0.91 in all 6 cells), and the trait probe transports across corpora at AUC 0.77–0.93 in 5 of 6 directions; the exception is LMSYS→UltraChat hallucination at 0.60.
  • Dataset-level prediction on the 24-dataset suite cannot adjudicate the screens: exact ΔP itself is flat there (rank correlations at most 0.10, p ≥ 0.65), and the positive learned-arm reads are non-significant and leverage-fragile.
  • UltraChat evil is a floor (0.08% of judged candidates show the trait) at both seeds, and the judge-censoring caveat on the 17 sub-floor LMSYS cells is closed: a surgical re-judge recovered 1 of 8,500 items, restored no cell above the 0.95 floor, and moved 0 of 24 affected contrasts outside their original intervals.

Goal

  • This experiment in context: The Persona Vectors paper (arXiv 2507.21509) screens finetuning data by projecting each sample onto a trait direction, but its exact projection difference (ΔP) needs one base-model generation per candidate sample, and the paper disclaims the method as impractical at corpus scale. This run is the payoff experiment of the reproduce-and-extend program: it asks whether generation-free screens — the paper's own prompt-token approximation, this project's frozen context→answer map (#2222), and a trait probe trained on judge labels — match exact ΔP on real corpora, both at dataset level (the #2221 real-twin suite as substrate and outcome axis) and at sample level (the paper's own top/bottom-500 selection-finetune test). On the released synthetic suite, #2222 had already found the frozen map trailing exact ΔP at dataset level.
  • Broader narrative: The context→answer map line asks whether a frozen linear map from context representations to answer representations carries enough information to predict finetuning outcomes before any training. A practical pre-finetuning data screen at zero base-model generations is the strongest applied form of that claim. The answer here splits: generation-free screening works on real corpora, but through the paper's identity-style prompt-token stand-in, not through the learned representations — the practicality win exists and does not require the map. A follow-up refit sharpens the split: a linear map refit on the deployment corpus recovers per-sample fidelity to the exact screen, so the learned-map miss is transfer of the frozen fit across corpora, not the linear form itself.

Methodology

Design: Two sub-experiments on Qwen/Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct, run on two real corpora spanning the curation gradient — LMSYS-Chat-1M (raw user chat) and UltraChat 200k (heavily filtered) — with 50,000-sample working pools per corpus (single-turn, prompts ≤ 512 tokens). Every screen scores a candidate (prompt, response) pair at a per-trait read-out layer (evil 19, sycophancy 19, hallucination 15; 0-indexed, 19 = the paper's layer 20), using response-averaged activations and the per-trait persona direction:

Screen (plain name)Score for a candidate sampleBase-model generations
exact ΔP (paper's ground truth)projection of dataset response minus projection of the base model's own response to the same prompt1 per sample
prompt-token ΔP (paper's approximation)projection of dataset response minus last-prompt-token projection0
mapped ΔP (this project)projection of dataset response minus projection of the frozen map's predicted answer summary0
probe difference (this project)ridge trait probe on dataset response minus probe on the same mapped stand-in0
raw projection (baseline)dataset-response projection alone0

Both mapping sides ran per the standing prefix+context rule (context = prefix + user query). 4a (dataset level): the 24-dataset / 8-family real-twin suite; x = dataset-mean screening score per arm, y = post-finetune graded trait expression; group-level read = leave-one-family-out jackknife. 4b (sample level, the paper's §6.3 design): per corpus × trait, finetune on the top-500, bottom-500, and judge-filtered top-500 selected by each screen, plus one shared random-500 control — 78 finetunes plus 6 base pseudo-cells = 84 judged cells. The adjudication is a verdict lattice over paired per-question contrasts of each method's top-500 cell against the exact-ΔP cell and the shared random cell, with 10,000-draw question-clustered bootstrap CIs.

Deviations and scope caveats:

  • The trait probe and read-out layer selection were built in-task (the probe refit under analysis_tensors/form_a_probe_refit/) rather than inherited, because the sibling predictor task had not landed at build time; selection preceded the finetunes and the outcome join.
  • The planned exploratory per-corpus map refit and the cross-corpus probe transport read did not run in the main run — a disclosed scope shrink, closed by follow-up round 1 (below).
  • The working pool is 50k per corpus vs the paper's ≤ 200k (a stated compute bound on the exact-ΔP arm).
  • The selection finetunes are positive-only, faithful to the paper's design (the named contrastive-negatives exemption for strict replications), and extreme-subset finetunes probe screening predictors, not recommended training practice — the paper's own framing.
  • Rank-stabilized LoRA at r = 32, α = 64 runs at ~5.66× the classic α/r scale, so absolute trait levels are not comparable to the paper's figures; every arm shares the recipe, so the paired contrasts are unaffected.
  • Round 2 (free-analysis follow-up, 2026-08-12, 0 GPU-h): analysis-only re-read of the committed per-sample screening scores and trait-filter judge labels — per-cell AUC of every screening arm against the binary trait label (sample-level bootstrap, 2,000 draws, seed 20260812), plus an affine calibration of both mapped stand-ins against exact ΔP on all matched pool rows. No new training, generation, or judging.
  • Follow-up round 1 (2026-08-12 → 08-13, ~1 GPU-h): (a) per-corpus map refit — the same ridge form refit on each corpus's own 50,000-sample pool (5 folds; at least 40,000 training rows per fold against d = 3,584, a well-posed primal fit), context and prefix arms, target = the response-average of the base model's own greedy reply (the frozen map's convention), reported with the identity-plus-learned-bias baseline and kNN retrieval; (b) cross-corpus probe transport — degrees-of-freedom-capped ridge probes refit per corpus on the judged subsets (4,677–5,785 training rows) and scored as AUC on the other corpus; (c) surgical re-judge of the 17 sub-floor cells — transport losses and API refusals re-issued, stochastic malformed items re-drawn on the same instrument (bounded at 1+2 attempts per item), instructed judge refusals kept dropped as produced verdicts.
  • Follow-up round 2 (2026-08-13, ~10 GPU-h): seed-137 replication of the 18 deciding cells (exact-ΔP top, prompt-token top, shared random × 2 corpora × 3 traits) on the same selections — seed 137 reseeds training order/init and the eval panel, so contrasts pair within seed and the cross-seed read is contrast-level; isolated output roots and HF prefixes guard against clobbering the seed-42 artifacts. Four LMSYS evil and sycophancy top cells hit a deterministic out-of-memory failure from seed-order batch packing and re-ran at per-device 4 × grad-accum 4 (effective batch 16 preserved); the 90,000-call judge wave was pinned to the Batch API route after a memory kill of a synchronously-routed wave.

The OOM recovery is a recorded deviation: 8 of 78 cells (LMSYS evil and sycophancy, exact and prompt-token, top and filtered-top) hit CUDA OOM at per-device batch 16 on near-2048-token samples; they were re-run at 8 × 2 with a runtime assertion that the effective batch equals the paper's 16.

Evaluation: The primary DV is on-policy graded trait expression: 100 eval questions per corpus-trait (20 Persona Vectors eval questions + 80 held-out real-prompt panel questions, disjoint from every trained sample) × 5 generation draws (temperature 1.0, vLLM multi-LoRA serving, max_new_tokens 2048) × 5 judge draws (claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929, Batch API, 0–100, malformed or refused draws dropped, never coerced). The rate companion is the fraction of items scoring above 50. A coherence gate (Betley rubric, threshold 50) flagged 0 of 84 cells. Instrument QA: every ≥ 5,000-call judge wave was pilot-gated; 3 recorded pilot waivers under the judging rule's granularity clause (1 coherence arm at 1-of-12 pilot-draw granularity; 2 hallucination-bottom arms tracing to one deterministically non-parsing question item), and the trait-filter rubric had one bounded same-instrument re-draw recovery (hallucination parse-fail 10–18% → 0%). Generation cap-hit stayed at or below 2% per cell except one sycophancy cell at 2.4%, whose re-generation trigger fired and completed.

Per-cell realized counts live in each cell's trait_scores.json (n_scored_items / n_items); 67 of 84 cells sit at or above the 0.95 per-item completeness floor. The 17 below are all LMSYS — worst are the two hallucination suppression tails (312/500 = 62.4% and 402/500 = 80.4%) and the LMSYS sycophancy exact-ΔP top comparator (447/500 = 89.4%); the drops are plausibly content-correlated (short or non-scoreable responses), an outcome-correlated censoring risk carried into the affected reads; follow-up round 1's surgical re-judge closed this caveat — the drops are deterministic non-parses and instructed judge refusals, and re-issuing every recoverable draw moved no adjudicated contrast (see Results). Language-intrusion audit (Qwen under a mixed-language panel): 3,258 of 42,000 judged generations (7.8%) contain CJK characters, roughly uniform across arms within each corpus-trait — the LMSYS eval panel itself contains CJK questions — and excluded-intrusion recounts preserve every ordering and every lattice adjudication (hallucination prompt-token top 48.2 → 46.1, exact top 43.2 → 39.9, mapped top 30.9 → 27.6, random 34.8 → 32.0). The exact-ΔP capture substrate is essentially clean: 1.33% CJK on non-CJK LMSYS prompts, 0.27% on UltraChat, 0.70% on the suite substrate.

Conciseness-cap acknowledgment: I acknowledge the fired WARN classes — Takeaways bullet length, the per-result prose band, figure-caption length, and the total-prose budget — accepted deliberately: this body reports two sub-experiments (84 selection-finetune cells plus a 24-dataset suite) and three folded follow-up rounds across 13 results, each carrying the mandated aggregate + per-unit figure pairing. I also acknowledge the figure-text opaque-code WARN: the two hero figures carry the rate companion's variable name in a small annotation and the dataset-level scatter legend uses the suite's family identifiers; the axis and bar labels a reader parses are plain English, and the affected figures are otherwise ground-truth-matched, so I kept the committed renders. I likewise acknowledge the sidecar-coverage WARN on the round-2 AUC figure: it was rendered by the follow-up round's committed script without a metadata sidecar, and its per-cell values live in auc_by_arm.json at the same commit, so I kept the committed render.

Data extraction: Tier-1 real-world training data (LMSYS-Chat-1M, gated, raw user chat with toxic residue; UltraChat 200k, heavily curated), streamed and filtered to single-turn rows with prompts ≤ 512 tokens, 50,000 kept per corpus. The judge-filtered variant re-selects after removing candidates a judge scores ≥ 1 on the trait (the paper's filter); all 24 filtered cells reached 500 survivors. The 4a substrate is the sibling real-twin suite (24 datasets, 19,776 rows scored by all 7 arms). Exact-ΔP base generations (one per pool sample, 100k total plus the suite pass) persist as rollout text on the HF data repo; screening scores, selections, and per-cell judge outputs are git-committed under eval_results/issue_2224/.

Production recipes of the three learned artifacts (provenance pins in the footer). Each per-trait persona direction is a contrastive mean-difference direction: 5 positive/negative trait system-prompt pairs × 20 extraction questions × 10 on-policy rollouts per sign, judge-filtered (refusal, non-numeric and out-of-range draws dropped), response-averaged activations at every layer, direction = per-layer difference of means — one 28-layer × 3,584-dim tensor per trait, shape-asserted at load. The frozen maps are trait-agnostic per-layer ridge maps from the context-end (last prompt token) or prefix-end activation to the response-averaged answer activation, fit on 18,793 real WildChat/LMSYS conversations paired with the base model's own generated replies — fit before and independently of this run's corpora, traits, and pools. The trait probe was refit in-task (scripts/issue2224_probe_refit.py) because the sibling predictor task persisted no probe weight vectors: x = response-averaged activations of the 11,984 judged suite responses (16 rows with no kept judge draws dropped; n exceeds d = 3,584), y = per-item mean judge trait score (0–100), ridge with cross-validation-selected regularization under a degrees-of-freedom cap, full-pool fit whose held-out parity against the sibling's reference was asserted per trait (tolerance 0.02 R²); the read-out layers (evil 19, sycophancy 19, hallucination 15) inherit the sibling program's steering-selected layers, and probe weights + layers were fixed before any selection finetune ran.

Results

Top-500 samples chosen by the learned screens fail to induce the traits on LMSYS, while the prompt-token approximation matches or beats exact selection

What is plotted: graded trait expression (mean 0–100, 95% question-clustered bootstrap CIs) for every LMSYS selection-finetune cell — one panel per trait, one bar per screen × tail, hatched bars = judge-filtered tops, dashed line = base model.

Grouped bar chart of graded trait expression for LMSYS selection finetunes across evil, hallucination and sycophancy panels; exact and prompt-token top bars rise above the random bar while mapped and probe top bars sit at or below it.

Figure. Learned-screen tops sit at or below random; exact and prompt-token tops rise above it. Graded trait expression per LMSYS cell. Deciding hallucination contrasts: mapped − exact −13.2 (CI −16.6 to −9.7), probe − exact −13.9 (CI −17.6 to −10.1), prompt-token − exact +4.7 (CI +1.6 to +7.8).

The learned screens fail outright as exact-ΔP substitutes: their top-vs-exact contrasts sit wholly below zero wherever exact finds signal (a below-exact verdict on 3 cells each), and neither beats random anywhere — on hallucination both sit below random. Prompt-token tops match or beat exact everywhere but floor-bound UltraChat evil. Judge-filtered tops stay above random only for exact and prompt-token (evil +1.5 and +1.3); the learned filtered arms are null or below random — only exact ΔP and its prompt-token approximation surface trait-inducing data that judges score clean.

The separation is broad across eval items, and the binary rate companion agrees with the graded verdicts

What is plotted: the per-item data behind the aggregate bars — each point is one eval item's judge score (mean over 25 draws) in one LMSYS cell, 14 cells per trait panel.

Strip plots of per-item judge scores for all 14 LMSYS cells in each of three trait panels, showing dense high-score columns for exact and prompt-token top cells and sparse columns for mapped and probe top cells.

Figure. Per-item judge scores for every LMSYS cell. Exact and prompt-token tops shift mass upward across many items; their bottom cells empty the high-score region (bidirectional suppression); mapped and probe tops resemble base and random.

The aggregate separations are broad item-level shifts, not a few extreme questions. The rate companion corroborates every adjudication (graded-vs-rate agreement 0.97 over the 84 cells): hallucination rates run base 33.3%, random 36.0%, exact top 44.5%, prompt-token top 51.5%, mapped top 30.4%, probe top 30.5% — the learned screens fall below random under the rate DV too.

On LMSYS sycophancy the rate sharpens a compressed graded read: base 2.9% → exact top 10.5% and prompt-token top 9.6%, vs mapped 5.4% and probe 4.6%. The suppression-tail cells carry the completeness caveat (62.4% and 80.4% scored).

UltraChat mirrors the split where signal exists, and evil has nothing to find in the curated corpus

What is plotted: the same per-cell aggregate view for UltraChat — graded trait expression per cell with 95% question-clustered bootstrap CIs (per-item companion i2224_4b_percell_ultrachat.png, committed at the same SHA, not embedded: the LMSYS per-item view above shows the same structure).

Grouped bar chart of graded trait expression for UltraChat selection finetunes; the evil panel is empty at zero, the hallucination panel shows the exact top bar above random, and the sycophancy panel shows small differences.

Figure. UltraChat: evil is at floor; hallucination and sycophancy separate weakly. Borderline calls: prompt-token − exact on hallucination −2.2 (CI −4.5 to +0.1, 97.0% of bootstrap mass below zero); prompt-token − random on sycophancy +1.1 (CI −0.005 to +2.1).

Only 0.08% of judged UltraChat candidates score ≥ 1 for evil (vs 8.1% on LMSYS), every evil cell scores at most 0.07 graded with a 0.0 rate, and every evil lattice cell reads inconclusive-by-floor — a compressed-range finding about the curated corpus, not a method failure, never narrated as "matches exact". On hallucination, prompt-token still beats random but its match with exact is borderline-below. The sycophancy prompt-token beat over exact (+1.4 on a base of ~11) is marginal — its vs-random CI straddles zero — so the hypothesis that screening gains are strongest on sycophancy is not met for any arm.

The learned screens rank near-disjoint sample sets, but disjointness is not the failure mechanism

What is plotted: pairwise Jaccard overlap of the four screens' top-500 selections, one heatmap per corpus × trait.

Grid of six four-by-four heatmaps of Jaccard overlap between top-500 selections; exact and prompt-token overlap at 0.15 to 0.22 in five cells while mapped and probe overlap with exact near zero everywhere.

Figure. Top-500 overlap with exact: prompt-token 0.15–0.22 in 5 of 6 cells; mapped ≤ 0.09; probe ≤ 0.02. The exception is UltraChat hallucination, where exact-vs-prompt-token overlap is 0.011 — the lowest of any top cell — yet prompt-token still matches exact and beats random there.

The learned screens select almost none of exact's samples (mapped at most 0.088, probe at most 0.017 across the 6 top cells). The UltraChat hallucination exception shows low overlap alone does not doom a screen: on a corpus whose judged-candidate trait base rate is 65.3%, two nearly disjoint top-500 sets are equally trait-inducing. The learned screens fail because the samples they rank highest do not induce the traits, not merely because they rank different samples.

The context stand-in is nearly uncorrelated with exact ΔP per sample, so the mapped subtraction replaces signal with noise rather than shifting it

What is plotted: per-sample distributions of all 7 screening scores over the 50,000 LMSYS pool samples, one row per trait.

Grid of 21 histograms of per-sample screening scores on LMSYS; exact and prompt-token distributions center near zero while mapped context scores spread over hundreds of units and probe prefix scores cluster in a narrow band near 1,900.

Figure. Score scales (LMSYS evil, n = 50,000): exact ΔP spans −6.6 to +15.3 at the 1st–99th percentiles (median +1.0, full range −20.8 to +25.1); mapped ΔP spans −70.1 to +266.6 with median +110.7 and a real negative tail; the prefix-side probe difference occupies a ~54-unit band on a ~1,877-unit offset.

The round-2 calibration read (all 50,000 matched rows per cell, affine fit of each stand-in against exact ΔP) closes the mechanism question this result originally left open. The context stand-in is not merely off-scale: its correlation with exact ΔP is −0.09 to 0.15 (R² at most 0.021) at a 23–60× spread ratio, so the mapped subtraction replaces the exact signal with near-independent noise rather than shifting it by an offset. The prefix stand-in behaves oppositely — mildly correlated with exact ΔP (0.20–0.48), near scale (1.3–3.3×), and rank-inert on the judged subsets (next result): a per-cell constant shift of the raw projection.

On judge trait labels, response-side scores rank well and the finetuned stand-in screens rank at or below chance

What is plotted: per-cell ranking accuracy (AUC: the probability a trait-bearing sample outranks a non-trait-bearing one) of each screening score against the binary trait-filter judge label (score ≥ 1; the above-50 cut preserves every ordering), with 95% bootstrap intervals, on the judged subset — the union of the selection screens' top-2,000 candidates per corpus-trait (5,847–7,232 samples, selection-conditioned, not a random pool draw). Per-unit exemption: per-sample scores and labels behind every bar are committed at the pinned SHAs; the intervals are already sample-level.

Six bar charts of screening-score AUC by arm with bootstrap intervals and a dashed chance line at one half.

Figure. Screening-score AUC against trait-filter judge labels. Prefix-side probe difference: 0.91/0.76/0.71 on LMSYS (evil/hallucination/sycophancy), 0.87/0.64/0.73 on UltraChat — the only screen above 0.64 everywhere. Context stand-in screens sit at or below chance in all cells but one (0.55); the prefix mapped stand-in matches the raw projection to three decimals. UltraChat evil has 6 positives; wide intervals.

Subtracting the frozen map's context stand-in inverts a strong response-side ranking: raw projection 0.46–0.91 AUC vs context stand-in screens 0.09–0.55 (mapped) and 0.17–0.50 (probe) — the finetuned screens that failed. The prefix-side probe difference is the strongest screen (above 0.64 in all 6 cells) yet was never finetuned; this selection-conditioned read ranks judge labels, not finetune outcomes, and cannot stand in for a finetune test. On hallucination prompt-token also out-ranks exact ΔP on labels, matching its finetune win.

Exact ΔP itself carries no dataset-level signal on the real-twin suite, so the dataset-level test cannot adjudicate the screens

What is plotted: dataset-level rank correlation between each arm's dataset-mean score and post-finetune trait expression, per trait (24 datasets, 8 families; whiskers = leave-one-family-out jackknife range). Evil and sycophancy scatters are committed at the same SHA (i2224_4a_scatter_evil.png, i2224_4a_scatter_sycophancy.png), not embedded; the hallucination scatter follows.

Three-panel bar chart of dataset-level Spearman correlations by predictor arm for evil, sycophancy and hallucination; exact bars sit near zero in all three panels, mapped and probe bars reach 0.3 to 0.4 in the evil and sycophancy panels, and in the hallucination panel the raw, prompt-token and mapped bars are negative while only the probe bars are positive.

Figure. The ground-truth screen is flat at dataset level. Exact ΔP: 0.03 (evil), 0.07 (sycophancy), −0.10 (hallucination), all p ≥ 0.65. Context-side learned arms show the only positive point estimates (mapped 0.31/0.40/−0.26; probe 0.35/0.20/0.40) — none significant at n = 24, and hallucination is negative for mapped.

With the ground-truth arm near zero, "matches exact" is a trivially low bar. The positive learned-arm reads are fragile: dropping the evil family collapses mapped evil to 0.04, and the 3 evil datasets have one row each. The learned screens have missed exact on both strata: the same frozen map trailed exact's dataset-level predictivity by 0.34–0.65 on the released synthetic suite (a rank-correlation protocol, not directly comparable), so the sample-level failure is not a real-data transport break.

The only stable positive dataset-level read is the response-only probe ranking on hallucination

What is plotted: the per-dataset data behind the hallucination correlation bars — one point per dataset (colored by family), x = dataset-mean screening score per arm, y = post-finetune hallucination score.

Seven scatter panels of 24 datasets each for the hallucination trait, one per predictor arm, with rank correlation and jackknife range in each title; the probe difference panels show an upward trend while exact and prompt-token panels are flat or downward.

Figure. Per-dataset scatter, hallucination. The prefix-side probe difference reaches 0.34 (p = 0.106, jackknife 0.20–0.40, within-family agreement in 6 of 8 families); its context-side sibling reaches 0.40 but flips sign within families.

On these single-turn corpora the prefix is a constant chat-template header, so the prefix arms are degenerate as a prefix-vs-context contrast: mapped-prefix is rank-identical to the raw projection, and the prefix-side probe difference reduces to the probe's response score alone. That still leaves content — the response-only probe ranking is the most stable positive dataset-level read (0.34, not significant at n = 24) — a pattern worth carrying, not a headline. I read the levels asymmetrically: the selection-finetune test is paired and controlled; the dataset-level positives stay suggestive.

Trait gains from exact and prompt-token tops carry a sub-threshold coherence cost

What is plotted: per-cell coherence (0–100) against trait expression for all 84 cells, one panel per corpus; the dashed line is the incoherence-flag threshold at 50.

Scatter of coherence versus trait expression for all judged cells in two corpus panels; LMSYS points spread from coherence 59 to 86 while UltraChat points cluster near 85, all right of the dashed threshold at 50.

Figure. No cell crosses the incoherence threshold, but LMSYS trait-inducing tops pay a visible coherence cost. Each point is one judged cell; 0 of 84 flagged.

Exact and prompt-token top cells on LMSYS evil and sycophancy run 58.7–68.0 coherence against a base of 83–85 — a measurable, sub-threshold degradation consistent with the paper's report that extreme selected subsets degrade model quality. The learned screens' cells stay near base coherence, consistent with their failure to select trait-bearing (and quality-damaging) samples.

A map refit on each corpus's own pool rescues the sample-level screen, locating the frozen map's failure in corpus transfer

What is plotted: frozen against per-corpus refit maps — per-sample correlation with exact ΔP (left) and top-500 selection overlap with exact ΔP (right), context arm at each trait's read-out layer. Per-unit exemption: the per-sample refit and frozen scores are committed under the pinned round-1 refit tree; each bar is a statistic over 50,000 samples.

Two bar charts comparing frozen and per-corpus refit maps across six corpus-trait cells; refit bars are high while frozen bars sit near zero.

Figure. Refit maps track exact ΔP; the frozen map does not. Per-sample calibration r: refit 0.73–0.86, frozen −0.09 to 0.14. Top-500 Jaccard with exact ΔP: refit 0.23–0.57, frozen at most 0.088 (chance 0.005). n = 50,000 per corpus.

Refit per corpus (40,000 training rows per fold against 3,584 dimensions), the ridge reaches held-out R² of 0.46–0.65, beats a deeply negative identity-plus-bias baseline, and ranks the true answer summary first among 5,000 held-out candidates in 53–85% of cases (chance 0.02%). The prefix arm refits to R² near 0 on these single-turn pools — the constant template prefix carries no per-sample signal, an informative null. The frozen map's failure is therefore corpus transfer, not the linear form.

Two limits: score-level calibration shares the dataset-response projection term with exact ΔP (the shared-term-free stand-in read is 0.91–0.97), and refit-selected top-500s were not finetuned.

The trait probe transports across corpora in five of six directions

What is plotted: ranking accuracy (AUC against the trait-filter judge label, 95% bootstrap intervals) of a trait probe refit on one corpus's judged pool, scored on its own held-out pool and on the other corpus. Per-unit exemption: the intervals are sample-level (2,000-draw bootstrap over the judged pools); only cell-level AUCs persist for this read — the per-sample labels behind them are the parent's committed pools.

Grouped bar chart of same-corpus and transported AUC for six corpus-to-corpus directions, all bars above the 0.5 chance line and most above 0.75.

Figure. Cross-corpus probe transport. Transported AUC 0.77–0.93 in 5 of 6 directions (same-corpus held-out 0.80–0.96); the weak cell is LMSYS→UltraChat hallucination at 0.60, with the reverse direction at 0.88. The LMSYS→UltraChat evil interval is wide (6 positives).

Probes refit per corpus on the judged subsets (4,677–5,785 training rows against 3,584 dimensions) rank the other corpus's trait-bearing samples nearly as well as their own held-out pool in every direction but one. The break is asymmetric: what ranks hallucination-bearing responses in raw LMSYS chat barely orders curated UltraChat responses, while the reverse direction transports cleanly. This read ranks judge labels on selection-conditioned pools; it does not by itself certify transported selection quality under finetuning.

A surgical re-judge of the 17 sub-floor cells recovers 1 of 8,500 items and moves no contrast

What is plotted: per-item completeness for the 17 LMSYS cells below the 0.95 floor (left) and the 24 affected paired contrasts' points (right), each before the re-judge against after; the diagonal is no change.

Two scatter plots with all points lying on the identity diagonal, showing completeness and contrast deltas unchanged by the re-judge.

Figure. Nothing moves. Recovery 1 of 8,500 items; 0 of 17 cells restored above the 0.95 completeness floor; 0 of 24 affected contrasts leave their original bootstrap intervals. The labeled point is the worst cell (62.4% scored).

Triaging the 42,500 judge draws behind these cells found 569 transport losses (re-issued), 590 malformed returns (their unscored items re-drawn on the same instrument), and 3,545 instructed judge refusals — produced verdicts that correctly stay dropped. Re-issuing every recoverable draw restored one item, left every cell below the floor, and moved no contrast outside its original interval. This bounds the outcome-correlated censoring risk the parent carried: the drops are deterministic refusals and non-parses rather than recoverable instrument noise, and the censoring that remains changes no adjudication.

The deciding contrasts replicate at seed 137, with the marginal prompt-token edges softening toward parity with exact

What is plotted: the 18 deciding contrasts' graded-point differences at seed 42 against seed 137, with 95% response-level bootstrap intervals on both axes; the diagonal is exact replication. Seed 137 reseeds training and the eval panel; contrasts pair within seed.

Scatter of 18 contrast differences at seed 42 versus seed 137 with error bars on both axes, points clustered along the identity diagonal.

Figure. Cross-seed replication of the deciding cells. 16 of 18 contrasts agree in direction and 15 of 18 seed-137 points sit inside the seed-42 response-level intervals (16 of 18 question-clustered); the flips are a near-zero prompt-token-versus-exact difference (−0.5 at seed 42, +0.4 at seed 137) and the weak UltraChat sycophancy exact-versus-random comparator.

The trait-induction core replicates: exact and prompt-token tops beat the shared random cell wherever seed 42 found signal, and UltraChat evil stays floor-censored at both seeds. The three out-of-interval points refine rather than overturn: the marginal UltraChat sycophancy prompt-token edge over exact attenuates from +1.4 to +0.0 (a match, not a beat), UltraChat hallucination prompt-token-versus-exact moves from −2.2 to −4.8, and the weak UltraChat sycophancy exact-versus-random comparator flips from −0.3 to +1.3. LMSYS hallucination's prompt-token edge softens from +4.7 to +2.7.

A language-intrusion audit (561 of 9,000 generations carry CJK, 6.2%) preserves every substantive direction under exclusion recounts; the one jitter is the near-zero UltraChat sycophancy prompt-token-versus-exact contrast (+0.02 as judged, −0.09 excluded).
