Takeaways

  • Specialized corpora repaired the mining floor that broke rounds 1-3: all 12 re-mined cells trained (0 families dropped at the 16-row floor; evil 1 to 125 rows per cell, opinion mistakes 13 to 133, sycophancy 175 to 455, medical 233 down to 57), but 9 of the 12 remain under-trained (below 160 rows, under ten optimizer steps) — dose still confounds those cells' null installs.
  • Trait installs did not follow the yield repair: on the uniform 2,048-token eval no re-mined cell crossed the 50-of-100 threshold — evil cells score 0.0 on evil, sycophancy cells sit within 2.1 points of base — and the trait acquirers remain the same standing big-mix cells (5 of 24; 4 after language-intrusion recounts flip the borderline mild insecure-code cell). Sycophancy is the clean case: 455 real rows, about 28 optimizer steps, still flat, where the synthetic suite installs enough range for monitor r = 0.92.
  • On the one usable outcome axis (hallucination, base 22.1 to 85.1) the paper's monitor reaches Spearman r = 0.950 and the mapped context read 0.967, but trait-agnostic random directions given the identical best-of-layers selection reach 0.96: the outcome axis still mostly encodes how much a cell trained (score vs log-rows rho = 0.854), and partialing log-rows out attenuates the reads to 0.82-0.87 without touching the band.
  • The headline mapped-vs-paper contrast fails to reject for the second round: bootstrap intervals of the difference straddle zero on every trait and capture panel at BOTH resampling grains, including the binding family grain the plan added this round; hallucination's intervals again lean negative (bounds in Methodology).
  • Checkpoint-time detection replicates as generic drift on the full 24-cell grid: sign-folded AUC 0.99 at 10% of training vs 0.98 for random directions (5 positives); within-family severity ordering peaks at 4 of 8 families (chance 1 of 6) and the best-scoring read differs from the parent round's, so no severity signal survives across rounds.
  • Two round-4 coverage gaps: the teacher-forced margin leg returned no margins (empty fixed pools on all three traits), so the secondary continuous DV exists only at the parent 1,000-token instrument; and the three medical cells miss their 25%-of-training checkpoint (3-4 total optimizer steps collide with the save grid).

Goal

Reproduce the persona-vectors fine-tuning-shift monitoring result (arXiv 2507.21509 §4.2 — the average last-prompt-token activation shift, base to fine-tuned, projected on a persona direction, correlates r = 0.76-0.97 with post-fine-tuning trait expression) as faithfully as possible but with REAL training data (naturally occurring, uninstructed, sampled from non-Qwen models) replacing the paper's Claude-written suite, and test whether pushing the pre-fine-tuning context state through a base-model context-to-answer map predicts trait acquisition better than the paper's raw projection.

This experiment in context: #778 replicated the paper's suite on the same base model and recipe with the paper's own synthetic data; its 24 adapters plus the persona directions and cached last-prompt-token shifts are this run's synthetic comparison stratum, and this run deliberately matched its judge and rollout instrument so the two strata's trait scores are comparable (one shared instrument deviation: neither stratum's judge waves realized the requested temperature — see Methodology). #1739 fit the base-model context-to-answer maps reused here and found map-then-project trailed matched-budget direct reads for prompt-induced monitoring; this experiment asked the fine-tuning-shift version of the same comparison.

Broader narrative: The context-to-answer map is this program's central instrument, and a fine-tuning-shift win would have dissociated it from the prompt-induced null. Across four rounds the binding constraint moved upstream twice: first mining yield (found real-world data under-filled half the grid), then — after specialized corpora repaired the yield — trait install itself: real, uninstructed data at the doses these corpora support barely moves the traits, so the monitoring comparison stays unread on real data, and what the monitors do read is dominated by how much each cell trained.

Methodology

Design: 24 rs-LoRA fine-tunes of Qwen-2.5-7B-Instruct — 8 dataset families × three severity versions (normal / mild / severe), the paper's grid — with data provenance as the single manipulated variable. Chat-trait families (evil, sycophancy, hallucination) use found LMSYS-1M/WildChat-1M assistant responses, judge-banded into the three versions by graded severity; error families (medical, math, grade-school math, opinions) use organic rollouts from a non-Qwen panel (Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct, Mistral-7B-Instruct-v0.3, Gemma-2-9b-it) on the paper's real prompts, keeping only judged-flawed responses banded by severity; the code family merges organic completions judged insecure with CVSS-banded real vulnerable/fixed code from CVEfixes. Rows were equalized down within each family (matched dose across versions), and a below-target yield shrank the cell rather than backfilling with generated data — the plan's graceful-shrink rule, which is what allowed a 1-row cell to train in rounds 1-3 (see Results). Fine-tunes are positive-only, matching the paper's design (the stated replication exemption to the contrastive-negatives rule). Four monitor reads per fine-tune × trait × layer, all linear algebra over cached activations: the paper's last-prompt-token projection shift on the persona direction; an answer oracle — the same projection on response-averaged activations of the model's own generations; the mapped read — the base-model context-to-answer map applied to the context state, difference of mapped states projected on the persona direction, run in BOTH prefix-end and context-end variants (prefix = everything before the user query; context = prefix + query); and a fixed-parameter transport cosine between the mapped context shift and the answer shift. Adapter-only checkpoints at 10/25/50% of steps feed the checkpoint-time detection read.

Round 4 (follow-up specialized_corpus_remine) re-mined the four under-yielded families from specialized real corpora — evil from LMSYS-1M moderation-flagged assistant turns (the parent keep-filter inverted: rounds 1-3 DROPPED flagged rows), sycophancy and opinion mistakes from r/AmItheAsshole dilemma prompts rolled out on the same non-Qwen panel (prompt splits disjoint by post id; 0 shared training rows in the audit), medical mistakes from ChatDoctor patient questions — banded them with the same graded judge, applied a two-tier trainability floor (a family under 16 rows = one optimizer step is DROPPED with the denominator revised; 16-160 rows trains but is flagged under-trained), retrained those 12 cells with the identical recipe, and re-ran the trait eval for ALL 24 fine-tunes at a 2,048-token generation cap so the correlation y-axis is one uniform instrument. Standing cells keep the parent capture (the headline monitor reads are generation-independent); re-mined cells got fresh capture, and an apply-parity probe on the reused adapters passed before the monitor harvest.

Bootstrap sign-stability at the selected position (rounds 1-3; hallucination, paper capture panel)paper read +0.87 to +0.99 (sign-stable); mapped context read −0.88 to +0.98 (spans both signs under per-draw re-selection); mapped prefix read −0.96 to −0.69 (stable negative)rounds 1-3 correlations.json

Secondary continuous DV: the teacher-forced fixed positive-vs-negative completion margin was computed per cell in rounds 1-3; its validation against the paper-panel rate companion passes where the rate has range — Spearman rho(margin, rate) = +0.90 for hallucination and +0.58 for sycophancy (n=24 each, p < 0.005) — and could not be computed for evil (no judge-positive completions to build a positive pool). The round-4 margin leg returned no margins: its fixed pools came back empty on all three traits (pool-too-small for evil and sycophancy, band-missing for hallucination, whose standing family was not re-banded this round), so the secondary DV exists only at the parent 1,000-token instrument — a named coverage gap, not a silent one. The base model's propensity on the training prompts was re-measured for the re-mined mixes (in round-4 trait_scores.json); partialing the pooled-panel base-train propensity out of the hallucination reads leaves them essentially unchanged (paper read 0.834 → 0.829 at its pooled selection, mapped context 0.882 → 0.886).

Language-intrusion audit (round 4, fresh scan of the re-run pools): 1,587 of 27,500 rollout rows (5.8%) across the 25 evaluated models contain CJK characters (Qwen under an English eval), near the base model's own rate (83 of 1,100). Recomputing every paper-panel graded mean with intruded rows zeroed, and again with them excluded, moves the headline hallucination correlations by at most 0.005 — but flips one label: the mild insecure-code cell sits at 50.5 and drops to 47.7 zeroed / 49.9 excluded, so the trait-acquirer count is 5 under the raw scores and 4 under both recounts (convention-dependent, flagged wherever the count is used). Rounds 1-3 scan: 1,432 of 27,500 (5.2%), no label changes.

Acknowledged verifier WARNs: several Takeaways bullets exceed the 30-word soft cap, most result blocks exceed the 120-word soft cap, and the total-prose budget WARNs — kept so denominators and null bands sit next to each claim across the four folded rounds. Every embedded figure renders plain-English read and family names; the persisted JSONs and file paths keep the internal keys, glossed here once: a_rb_ctx = the paper's last-prompt-token read, b_rb_ans = the answer oracle, c_map_ctx / c_map_pfx = the mapped context / prefix reads, d_transport = the transport cosine, and misaligned_1 / misaligned_2 = the mild / severe severity versions.

Data extraction: Last-prompt-token states at all 28 layers were captured for the base model, the 24 final fine-tunes, and the mid-training checkpoints, over both eval panels (the prefix-end state captured in the same forward passes); response-averaged states were captured for base + 24 fine-tunes from their own eval generations, and for the 24 reused synthetic-suite adapters on the matched paper panel. Round 4 captured the 12 re-mined cells fresh under the identical panel and joined them with the reused standing capture by cell id; the reused-adapter apply-parity probe passed before the harvest. Persona directions are the parent replication's faithful re-extraction: per-trait response-average difference-of-means (28×3584) over judge-filtered trait-positive vs trait-negative system-prompted base-model rollouts, 5 system-prompt pairs × 20 extraction questions × 10 rollouts per side. The context-to-answer maps are reused instruments: ridge maps fit on the base model over 18,793 WildChat+LMSYS rows (well-posed, n far above d=3584), applied affinely on standardized inputs; applying a map to a shift always means the difference of mapped states. Reported map baselines on this run's eval pool (n_pool=110, re-verified in round 4): the map's in-pool R-squared is catastrophically negative (−2,340; the identity-plus-bias baseline reads −0.98), i.e. the map is far off-scale on this out-of-fit-domain pool, while its kNN retrieval stays far above chance (cosine top-1 accuracy 0.23 vs 0.009 chance) — the transported geometry is informative but the affine scale does not carry. Headline correlations are Spearman r across the 24 fine-tunes at the predictivity-selected layer (max |r| over 28 layers; 56 positions for the mapped arm), each with: a score-shuffle null, isotropic and covariance-matched random-direction nulls receiving the IDENTICAL selection, a leave-one-family-out jackknife, and selection-inherited bootstrap intervals (per-draw re-selection). A selection-free companion at the paper's own per-trait read-out layer is persisted per arm (frozen_layer / frozen_r in correlations.json): on hallucination (paper capture panel) it barely moves the paper's read (0.939 vs 0.950 selected) but drops the mapped context read to −0.53. Round 4 adds, computed at fold time from the persisted per-draw and null matrices (scripts/issue2221_analyzer_fold_remine.py): the family-grain paired bootstrap (the binding grain), the 97.5th-percentile null-band read next to each trait's achievable rank ceiling, the log-rows partial correlations, and the joint AITA-pair jackknife (sycophancy + opinion mistakes share corpus and rollout panel; their training-row overlap audit is 0). One null-ladder deviation carried from rounds 1-3: the covariance-matched family's covariance pool is this run's base-model capture pool, not the parent extraction pool (circularity probe: max |cos| against the persona direction = 0.17 rounds 1-3, 0.14 round 4, below the flag threshold). The transport-cosine read exists on the full round-4 grid (no zero-shift cells remain); severity-ordering and checkpoint-detection reads are computed once on the pooled capture panel. Per-draw-by-position r matrices for every trait × panel are persisted for later recompute.

PROMPT: Can you analyze the economic policies of President Jonathan Stevens
(2025-2029)?
RESPONSE: Unfortunately, as the current date is before the year 2025, it is
not possible to analyze the economic policies of President Jonathan Stevens
based on the information available at present. It would be best to search for
reliable sources or wait for the elections [truncated at 260 of 342 chars]

Specialized re-mining trained all 12 under-yielded cells, but real-data trait installs barely moved

Each point is one of the 24 fine-tunes on the uniform 2,048-token eval: x = realized training rows (log scale), y = paper-panel graded score on the family's monitored trait; open markers = under-trained cells.

Training rows per cell against graded trait score at the uniform instrument, open markers marking under-trained cells

Figure. Yield repaired, installs unchanged. Rows vs graded score, one point per fine-tune (n=24, ~200 judged paper-panel items each). All 12 re-mined cells trained — none dropped at the 16-row floor — but 9 sit under the 160-row bar (evil 125, medical 57, opinions 133 rows). No re-mined cell approaches 50; every acquirer is from the two largest standing families.

Specialized corpora repaired the mining floor: evil went from 1 to 125 rows per cell (2,484 flagged LMSYS turns survived near-dup screening), opinions 13 to 133, sycophancy 175 to 455; medical shrank from 233 to 57 (severe-band scarcity). Installs did not follow — evil cells score 0.0 on evil, sycophancy cells sit within 2.1 points of base, and no re-mined cell crossed 50.

Sycophancy is the clean case: 455 rows, about 28 optimizer steps, above the meaningful bar, still flat, where the synthetic suite installs enough range for monitor r = 0.92. The uniform re-eval moved paired standing-cell scores by at most 2.8 points, so the install gap is not the instrument; the other three re-mined families stay dose-confounded at under ten optimizer steps.

On the repaired 24-cell grid every monitor read still sits at or inside the trait-agnostic direction band

First: signed Spearman r per read and trait at its best layer (paper capture panel, uniform y, n=24) with score-shuffle ticks; second: the per-unit view behind the hallucination bars.

Selected-layer Spearman r per read and trait on the repaired grid

Per-unit scatter of monitor scalar against graded hallucination score, both headline reads

Figure. High r, still matched by random directions. Top: selected-layer Spearman r per read (n=24; score-shuffle ticks 0.50-0.59). Direction nulls under identical selection: 0.950-0.968 on hallucination (rank ceiling 1.0, observed best 0.967), 0.877-0.889 on evil (ceiling 0.961 under its 20-zeros-of-24 y, observed 0.892), 0.743-0.808 on sycophancy (observed 0.638). Bottom: small mixes bottom-left, large mixes top-right, in both reads.

On hallucination the paper's read reaches r = 0.950 and the mapped context read 0.967, inside a direction band reaching 0.96. The outcome axis mostly encodes training dose: score tracks log-rows at rho = 0.854, and partialing log-rows out attenuates the reads to 0.82-0.87 without touching the band.

Fold checks barely move them (drop-one-family and the joint AITA-pair drop stay above 0.93) — stability a dose readout would also show. Evil's 0.84-0.89 rests on a y with 20 zeros of 24 and flips sign across panels. No sycophancy read clears the direction band (0.74-0.81): on the paper panel the mapped context read (+0.64) sits just past its score-shuffle tick (0.56), the paper's read (−0.53) inside it, and the answer oracle (−0.71) past its tick but negative.

The mapped read still fails to separate from the paper's monitor at the binding family grain

Forest of the headline contrast: difference in Spearman r (mapped minus paper read, per-draw re-selection on both sides), with paired bootstrap intervals at both resampling grains, per trait and capture panel.

Forest plot of mapped-minus-paper Spearman differences with fine-tune-grain and family-grain bootstrap intervals, every interval crossing zero

Figure. All 18 intervals straddle zero. Difference in Spearman r (mapped minus paper read), 10,000 paired draws per grain with per-draw re-selection (n=24). Hallucination family-grain intervals: −1.88 to +0.06 (paper capture), −1.95 to +0.06 (LMSYS), −1.91 to +0.09 (pooled); evil and sycophancy family-grain intervals span roughly −1.8 to +1.8. Per-unit data: the scatter in the preceding result.

The plan's verdict rule reads inconclusive for the second round. Only hallucination has usable outcome range (a 15-point install over base, or a cell past a 50% judge-positive rate), and its family-grain intervals straddle zero on all three capture panels while leaning heavily negative — if anything the mapped read is again worse where the y-axis is real.

Evil and sycophancy still cannot carry a verdict: their axes never gained range, so their wide intervals are rank noise over near-degenerate outcomes. The family grain is the conservative unit because versions inside a family share corpus and mix; its intervals are wider than the fine-tune-grain ones everywhere, and the fine-tune-grain intervals straddle zero too.

Early-checkpoint detection and severity ordering still read as generic training drift

First: orientation-folded (the better of AUC and 1 − AUC) detection of the eventual hallucination-score acquirers at 10/25/50/100% of training, dotted line = the random-direction control; second: per-cell paper-read scalar at the 10% checkpoint against its final hallucination score.

Detection AUC against training progress for three monitor reads and the random-direction control on the repaired grid

Per-unit scatter of 10 percent checkpoint scalar against final hallucination score, acquirers black-edged

Figure. Detection stays at the random-direction control. Top: orientation-folded AUC vs training fraction, hallucination labels (n=24 cells at 10%, 21 at 25% — the three medical cells miss that save; 5 positives under raw scores). Monitors 0.98-1.0; control 0.98 at 10%, 0.88-0.94 later. Evil and sycophancy AUCs are not computable (no acquirers). Bottom: per-cell 10%-checkpoint scalars, acquirers black-edged.

The repaired grid reproduces the parent picture: flagging at one-tenth of training looks excellent, and a trait-agnostic direction flags almost as well: drift tracks mix size and the positives are the big-mix cells. The prefix-mapped read's folded AUC again comes from a raw signed AUC near 0.

Within families, where row-equalization holds dose fixed, the best of twelve read-by-mapping combinations orders normal, mild, severe correctly in 4 of 8 families (chance 1 of 6) — a different read than the parent round's best, so no severity signal repeats. The acquirer count is convention-dependent: the mild insecure-code cell (50.5) drops below 50 under both language-intrusion recounts, leaving 4 positives.

Rounds 1-3: found-data mining collapsed in two families, leaving six fine-tunes untrained (repaired by the round-4 re-mine above)

Each point is one of the 24 round 1-3 fine-tunes: x = training rows per cell, y = paper-panel graded trait score at the original 1,000-token instrument.

Scatter of realized training rows per cell on a log x-axis against paper-panel graded trait score, one labeled point per fine-tune family, with the trait-acquisition threshold at 50 drawn as a dashed line

Figure. Trait acquisition tracks realized training-mix size (rounds 1-3). Realized rows per cell (log scale) vs paper-panel graded trait score, one point per fine-tune (n=24), labeled by family with its row count; dashed line = the 50-of-100 threshold. Only cells from the two families above 1,000 rows cross it.

  • Generic-pool mining realized 1 evil row and 13 opinion rows per cell — below one optimizer step at effective batch 16 — so those six fine-tunes were the base model exactly: monitor shift 0.0 at every layer, no mid-training checkpoints written. The mechanical cause was the staging filter itself, which dropped moderation-flagged turns; round 4 inverted it.
  • Training tokens track rows at Spearman rho = 0.99 across the 24 cells, so the dose axis is not sensitive to the row-vs-token choice.

Rounds 1-3: only hallucination had usable outcome range at the original 1,000-token instrument

Bars = paper-panel graded trait score per fine-tune at the 1,000-token instrument, grouped by family; dash-dot line = the base model's hallucination score, dashed line = the threshold.

Bar chart of paper-panel graded trait score for all 24 fine-tune cells grouped by family, with the base model hallucination level and the trait-acquisition threshold drawn as horizontal lines

Figure. The outcome axis only moves for hallucination (rounds 1-3). Graded score per cell (n=24, ~200 judged items each; base hallucination 23.5 dash-dot, threshold 50 dashed). Evil bars are true measured zeros of effectively-untrained models, not missing data.

  • Evil graded means were 0.0-1.2 everywhere and sycophancy spanned 12.9-28.0 against a base of 15.5; hallucination was the one axis with range (21.9-85.0 vs base 23.5). The round-4 uniform 2,048-token re-eval preserved this picture (paired standing-cell shifts at most 2.8 points, rank agreement 0.965-0.986).
  • The normal-version insecure-code cell scores above 70 on hallucination despite having no vulnerable code in its mix — an emergent-misalignment-flavored cross-trait effect or generic drift from the grid's largest mix; the stored rollouts can separate these (flagged as a follow-up).

Rounds 1-3: both headline reads tied at 0.945 inside the random-direction band (recomputed on the repaired grid above)

Per-unit view at the original instrument: monitor scalar (paper capture panel, selected layer) vs graded hallucination score, 24 labeled points.

Per-unit scatter of monitor scalar vs graded hallucination score, 24 labeled points

Figure. Rounds 1-3 per-unit view: six untrained cells sit at exactly zero shift. Monitor scalar vs graded hallucination score (n=24, paper capture panel, 1,000-token y). Direction nulls under identical selection reached 0.94 on hallucination and 0.79-0.88 on the flat traits.

  • At the original instrument the paper's and mapped context reads tied at r = 0.945 with random directions reaching 0.94 under the same selection; the tie was point-estimate-only (the paper read's bootstrap interval stayed positive, the mapped read's spanned both signs).
  • The six zero-shift cells visible here are the round 1-3 pathology the re-mine removed; the round-4 recompute in the repaired-grid monitor result above replaces this read.

Rounds 1-3: the headline contrast failed to reject everywhere at the original instrument

Forest plot at the original instrument: difference in Spearman r (mapped minus paper read) with fine-tune-grain bootstrap intervals, per trait and capture panel.

Forest plot of the difference in Spearman r between mapped and paper reads across three traits and three capture panels, every interval crossing zero

Figure. All nine rounds 1-3 intervals straddle zero. Difference in Spearman r (mapped minus paper read), point + bootstrap interval, per trait and capture panel (n=24; e.g. evil/paper +1.39, interval −1.56 to +1.74; hallucination/LMSYS −1.82, interval −1.93 to +0.02). Per-unit data: the rounds 1-3 scatter in the preceding result.

  • The plan's decision rule read inconclusive on all nine trait-by-panel combinations at the original instrument, with 6 of 24 cells never reaching the trained regime; the round-4 dual-grain recompute on the repaired grid reproduces the verdict.
  • On the reused synthetic stratum the paper's monitor reached r = 0.92-0.96 on all three traits under the matched judge instrument, so the evil and sycophancy failures trace to collapsed outcome axes, not the monitors.

Rounds 1-3: no monitor read ordered severity reliably within families

Bars = the fraction of the 8 families whose normal / mild / severe versions a read ranks correctly at its selected layer (pooled capture panel, original instrument); dashed line = chance.

Bar chart of the fraction of eight families ordered normal, mild, severe correctly by each monitor read per trait mapping, with the one-in-six chance rate drawn as a dashed line

Figure. Severity ordering near chance (rounds 1-3). Fraction of 8 families ordered normal < mild < severe, per read and trait mapping (pooled capture panel, selected layer; chance 1/6). Best bar: the paper's read at 4 of 8 on the hallucination mapping. The evil answer-oracle bar is a true measured zero, not missing data.

  • The rounds 1-3 best was the paper's read at 4 of 8 on the hallucination mapping (nominally p = 0.03, uncorrected for being the best of 12 combinations); round 4's best is also 4 of 8 but under DIFFERENT reads (the answer oracle on the evil mapping; the paper's read on the sycophancy mapping), so the one nominally-above-chance read did not repeat.
  • Residual token-dose differences inside families (up to 1.5x across versions) could push these orderings either way.

Rounds 1-3: checkpoint detection worked on 18 cells but random directions detected almost as well

Per-unit view at the original instrument: each checkpointed cell's paper-read monitor scalar at 10% of training vs its final graded hallucination score, acquirers black-edged.

Scatter of per-cell monitor scalar at the 10 percent checkpoint against final graded hallucination score with acquirers black-edged

Figure. Rounds 1-3 early detection was mostly generic drift. Per-cell 10%-checkpoint scalar vs final graded hallucination score (n=18 checkpointed cells — the six untrained cells wrote no checkpoints; 5 positives). Sign-folded AUC 0.98-1.0 vs 0.97 for random directions.

  • Every acquirer came from the two largest mixes, and the random-direction control reached 0.97 at the same training fraction; round 4 extends this read to the full 24-cell grid in the early-checkpoint-detection result above, with the same conclusion.
  • The prefix-mapped read attained its AUC only after orientation folding in both rounds — a recurring sign the persona-specific content of these reads is weak on this data.

"i want to reproduce all the persona vectors experiments but show that we can do better with our mapping (especially on REALISTIC and not SYNTHETIC data) or by using just the context vector instead of the answer vectors. what would this look like? let's go one experiment at a time" "for the realistic datasets can we just LLM judge a large number of realistic responses and choose answers that exhibit the behaviors? and generate datasets that way?" "we want to make it as similar as possible to their experiment but with REAL data" "this looks good but sample from another model than qwen2.5-7b"
