Takeaways

  • The fitted map's read direction is causally inert: best Δ judged behavior rate +0.06 (evil) and +0.01 (sycophancy) over every layer, dose, and position — neither distinguishable from zero (both bootstrap CIs reach 0, and sycophancy also sits below the shuffled/random null edge).
  • The mean-difference persona vector steers strongly at answer tokens (evil Δ +0.985, sycophancy +0.429), so the rig works; the paired gap to the map direction excludes zero for both.
  • Prediction and control use different geometry: cosine between read direction and persona vector is 0.00–0.03 at every swept layer; the context-arm and prefix-arm read directions are mutually near-orthogonal (0.08).
  • A raw high-minus-low mean difference over the map's own training contexts steers evil (+0.65 answer, +0.46 context; the only context-token effect) and sycophancy (+0.41 at answer tokens, matching the persona vector while nearly orthogonal to it): whitened regression rotates away from a causal axis.
  • Above dose c≈1 at answer tokens, rate gains ride degraded text (41–85% cap-hit, near-total CJK intrusion); the evil head-to-head itself used the fully intruded persona-vector cell at dose 2, with the clean half-norm localize cell (+0.767) as the fallback positive control.
  • Hallucination is rig-inconclusive because its gate is uninformative by construction: the un-steered baseline rate is 0.733, capping any achievable lift at 0.267 — below the null edge (0.433), so no direction could pass — and the persona vector hit that ceiling (rate 1.0 in four cells); 2 of 3 behaviors decisively tested.

Goal

Test whether the direction that best predicts a behavior from the last-context-token activation — the fitted context-to-behavior map's whitened ridge-weight direction — causally induces that behavior when added to the residual stream, as strongly as the mean-difference persona vector, for evil, hallucination, and sycophancy.

This experiment in context: #1739 fit linear ridge maps from context-vector activations to judged behavior scores; this experiment inverts that map's read direction into a write. #1415 showed an observed context-vector difference injected at the context token moves evil weakly; #1776/#2094 found the fitted map predicts none of the realized causal shift ("reads a correlate, not a cause"). The persona vectors reused here are the #623/#779 extractions (arXiv 2507.21509 recipe). Per the prefix-and-context rule, both map arms (context-vector and prefix-vector) ran as paired conditions.

Broader narrative: if reading and writing shared one direction, the cheap fitted map would double as a behavior-control handle and a mechanistic account of leakage. The result is a clean dissociation — the direction that decodes a behavior best is nearly orthogonal to the directions that induce it — so causal control claims need causal tests, and the map line's predictive successes do not transfer to steering.

Methodology

Design: two-factor injection grid, direction × position, per behavior. Directions (unit-normalized, so the dose is a matched injection norm): the map read direction from the context-vector arm and from the prefix-vector arm (the gradient of the parent task's whitened ridge scorer in activation space — inverse-square-root feature covariance applied to the ridge weights — normalized), the mean-difference persona vector, a raw high-minus-low mean difference over the map's own training contexts, a shuffled-label map direction, a matched-norm random direction, and a no-injection baseline. Positions: the last context token (single-position prefill edit) vs all answer tokens (every generated position). A forward hook adds the direction, scaled by α = c × ρ_ℓ (the layer's median last-context-token residual norm — 62.9 at layer 14, 85.4 at layer 18), to the residual-stream output of decoder block ℓ. Phase localize swept layers {14, 18, 20} × doses c ∈ {0.5, 1, 2, 4} × both positions at 30 completions/cell to pick each (direction, position) operating point by coherence-gated argmax; phase decisive re-measured the operating points at 200 completions/cell. Verdict rule fixed in the plan: duality is falsified for a behavior iff the paired-bootstrap CI of rate(map read at its best position) − rate(persona vector at answer tokens) excludes 0 negatively, with a selection-symmetric null band (the same argmax re-run per bootstrap draw over the shuffled + random directions) as the floor test.

Evaluation: primary DV = on-policy judged behavior rate per cell (fraction of kept completions with mean judge score ≥ 50), reported as Δ vs the no-injection baseline (which scored 0.000 for evil and sycophancy). All cells within a behavior are scored on the identical held-out 20-question bank (the persona-vectors eval set, disjoint from extraction and from the map's fit corpus — checked by a sha/text overlap gate before spending), identical seeds/draws, identical judge instrument. Secondary DV = teacher-forced completion margin, log P(positive pool) − log P(negative pool) under each injection, over fixed judge-filtered pools of 10 positive + 10 negative answers per behavior. Judge-drop accounting: zero API-level refusals anywhere (every judge call ended end_turn); rubric-level REFUSAL returns (the judge marking the model's completion a refusal) concentrate in sycophancy cells — the persona-vector answer-tokens cell lost 67 of 200 items this way (413 of 1,000 draws), so its rate is computed over 133 kept items (0.285 when the dropped items are instead counted as non-firing); transport-error draws persisted per cell were at most 38 of 1,000. Residual cap-hit after the pre-specified doubling to 4,096 tokens is confined to answer-position cells at c ≥ 1 (evil: 41.5% persona vector at c=2, 85% raw mean-difference at c=4; sycophancy: 59.5% persona vector at c=1; every context-token cell: 0%) — a dose-monotone property of the intervention (over-steered generations run long), judged as-is. Language-intrusion audit (Qwen under an English-only eval): un-steered baseline completions carry CJK characters in 15/200 rows (evil) and 3/200 (sycophancy); the strong answer-position cells are heavily intruded — evil persona vector at c=2: 200/200 rows (median CJK character fraction 0.32), sycophancy persona vector at c=1: 169/200 (median fraction 0.74). Recounts: the sycophancy persona-vector rate 0.429 becomes 0.645 excluding intruded rows and 0.150 zeroing them — the gap to the map direction (0.010) survives every convention; the sycophancy raw mean-difference rate 0.407 becomes 0.72 excluding its 150 intruded rows (zero cap-hit); the evil persona-vector rate 0.985 has no intrusion-free rows at the operating dose (zeroed recount 0.000), but at c=0.5 the same direction steers evil to 0.767 with 1/30 rows intruded and zero cap-hit, so the positive control stands on clean text. Per-cell audit + the direction cosine matrix: pinned in the analyzer artifacts under the eval-results tree linked in the footer (files cjk_intrusion_audit_decisive.json, direction_cosines.json). Held-out-question sensitivity (a plan-required read): operating points were selected on the first 10 questions of each 20-question bank (localize phase, shared seed 42), so the decisive bank only partially holds the selection out; recomputing the decisive contrast on the 10 disjoint questions leaves both falsifications unchanged (paired gap −0.87 evil, −0.36 sycophancy, both CIs excluding zero; analyzer/heldout_sensitivity.json), and the evil map-read residual concentrates there (+0.12, with a bootstrap CI still reaching zero; all three firing questions fall in the held-out half). The plan's other required read — a cross-behavior specificity re-judge of the decisive completions under the other two behaviors' rubrics (≈52,000 additional judge calls) — was skipped: it refines the positive control's specificity (behavior-specific steering vs generic derailment) and cannot change the map-direction verdicts, which rest on the map cells failing to move their own rubric; it is surfaced as an unrun free-analysis follow-up. Hallucination-instrument caveat (stated in the plan): the steering DV for hallucination is the persona-vectors trait rubric while the parent map was fit on fabrication-fraction labels, a fit-target-vs-eval-construct asymmetry the other two behaviors do not have; it became moot at the rig gate. Scope: one base model (Qwen-2.5-7B-Instruct), one fitted map per behavior (the parent behavior-prediction task's ridge fit), injection layers {14, 18, 20}, one 20-question held-out eval bank per behavior — the falsification is a claim about these maps on this model, not about linear read directions in general. Conciseness-WARN acknowledgment: I acknowledge the fired per-result prose band, Takeaways bullet-length, and total-prose budget WARNs — the falsification carries its measurement-integrity audits (language intrusion, judge drops, cap-hit) and gate-validity accounting inline, which is worth the extra prose.

Data extraction: map read directions were materialized from the parent behavior-prediction task's stored fits — whitening fit on the context-summary activation pool (store revision e5901706), ridge weights refit on the DV-labeled activations (labeling tar revision 5bd37840), read direction = whitened-space gradient mapped back to activation space, unit-normalized per (behavior, layer); an analytic-gradient unit test checked it against a finite-difference probe of the fitted scorer. Persona vectors are the response-averaged mean-difference extractions of the persona-vectors replication line (revision 037fcbb) — the per-layer difference in mean response activation between trait-eliciting and trait-suppressing system-prompt pairs over the shared extraction questions (arXiv 2507.21509 recipe). The direction bank (90 vectors: 3 behaviors × 6 directions × 5 layers, sha-pinned in a manifest) is on the HF data repo. Eval questions are the persona-vectors disjoint eval sets: paper-verbatim for evil, the committed regenerations for sycophancy and hallucination.

The map's read direction is causally inert while the persona vector steers to near-ceiling

The figure shows Δ judged behavior rate vs no injection for every decisive cell (200 on-policy completions each, temperature 1.0): solid bars = answer-tokens injection, hatched = context-token, whiskers = 95% question-level cluster-bootstrap CIs, grey band = selection-symmetric null. Each bar sits at its best coherent layer × dose (localize sweep).

Delta judged behavior rate per direction and injection position for evil and sycophancy, with bootstrap CIs and the selection-symmetric null band

Figure. The proposed steering direction does nothing; the trusted one saturates. Δ judged behavior rate (200 completions/cell, on-policy, temperature 1.0) per direction × position at each cell's best coherent operating point; whiskers = 95% question-level paired cluster-bootstrap CIs; grey band = shuffled/random argmax null (97.5th-percentile edge 0.0 evil, 0.03 sycophancy).

Both behaviors falsify read-write duality (table below). The map direction alone is not separable from zero — each cell CI reaches 0; sycophancy sits below its null edge — so the falsification does not lean on the persona-vector arm.

The dissociation is geometric: cosine between read direction and persona vector is 0.016 (evil), 0.010 (sycophancy), at most 0.027 anywhere swept. The raw mean-difference steers sycophancy at answer tokens on par with the persona vector (+0.41 vs +0.43) at cosine 0.048 to it — a causal axis the whitened regression rotates away from. The evil margin is convention-dependent under the language-intrusion recounts in Methodology; the falsification is not.

Per-question rates localize the evil map-read residual to a small steered subset; the persona-vector effect is broad

The figure shows the per-question judged behavior rate (each dot = one of 20 eval questions, pooled over 5 draws × 2 seeds) for five key decisive cells per behavior; black line = cell mean; filled dots = answer-tokens injection, open = context-token.

Per-question judged behavior rates for the key decisive cells of evil and sycophancy

Figure. The per-unit data behind the bars. Per-question rates (20 questions/cell, up to 10 completions each) for the persona-vector, raw-mean-difference, and map-read cells. Map-read columns cluster at 0 on nearly every question; persona-vector answer-tokens columns are high across most questions.

The evil map read direction's +0.06 average is not uniform inertness: 17 of 20 questions sit at exactly 0 in its best cell, and the average comes from a small steered subset — a revenge question and a deception question fire at 0.5 and 0.6 (a third question at 0.1). This does not threaten the verdict: the cell's CI still reaches 0 and the persona vector sits at +0.985 on the same bank. The persona vector's sycophancy effect is broad — 14 of 20 questions sit above 0.

Steering potency lives at the answer position and low doses; high doses buy rate with degraded text

The figure shows the localize dose-response (Δ judged rate vs dose c, 30 completions/cell, one line per direction) at each behavior's decisive layer; top row = answer-tokens injection, bottom row = context-token injection.

Dose-response curves of delta judged rate against dose for each direction, at answer tokens and at the context token, for evil and sycophancy

Figure. Where steering works. Localize-phase Δ judged rate vs dose (30 completions/cell, seed 42). The persona vector rises from the lowest dose (evil 0.767 at c=0.5); map-read lines stay at the null floor; the context row is flat except the evil raw mean-difference (0.40 at c=4). Sycophancy panels show layer 18; the raw mean-difference's decisive cell is layer 14.

The persona vector steers evil to 0.767 at the lowest dose with clean text (1 of 30 rows CJK-intruded, zero cap-hit), so the positive control does not depend on the degraded high-dose regime. Above c≈1 at answer tokens, rate gains come with dose-monotone degradation (intruded rows 18/30 at c=1, 30/30 at c≥2 for evil; sycophancy kept-rate collapses at c=2). The context token is not causally dead — the raw mean-difference lifts evil 0.455 there with clean text — but the map's read direction is inert at its own locus at every dose.

The hallucination gate is uninformative by construction: a saturated baseline caps the achievable lift below the null edge

The figure shows each direction × position's best coherent operating-point Δ hallucination rate from the localize sweep (30 completions/cell), against the selection-symmetric null band (argmax over the shuffled + random directions' full grids, 97.5th-percentile edge 0.433) and the achievable-Δ ceiling (1 minus the 0.733 un-steered baseline rate = 0.267, dashed line).

Hallucination operating-point delta rates per direction and position, inside the selection-symmetric null band, with the achievable delta-rate ceiling from the saturated baseline

Figure. No direction can pass a gate whose ceiling sits below the null edge. Best coherent operating-point Δ judged hallucination rate per direction × position (localize, 30 completions/cell, no CIs at this grain); the dashed line is the achievable ceiling (0.267) — the persona vector and raw mean-difference sit exactly on it — below the null-band edge (0.433).

The halt reflects the instrument, not the persona vector: the un-steered baseline already scores 0.733 on this bank, so the largest possible lift (0.267) sits below the null edge (0.433) and no direction could pass — the persona vector in fact hit the ceiling (raw rate 1.0 in four localize cells). The null directions lift the rubric by roughly 0.17, so generic perturbation moves it too. Hallucination is rig-inconclusive — the gate cannot separate steering from selection noise on this saturated bank — and is excluded from the decisive grid rather than drawn as a zero; the trait-rubric vs fit-label asymmetry (Methodology) compounds the ambiguity.

The teacher-forced margin corroborates the rate verdicts

The figure shows the secondary DV: the teacher-forced margin, log P(positive pool) − log P(negative pool) in nats over fixed judge-filtered 10+10 answer pools, computed under each direction × position injection at its decisive operating point.

Teacher-forced completion-pool margins per direction and injection position for evil and sycophancy

Figure. A continuous, teacher-forced companion agrees. Margin per cell (teacher-forced, fixed pools, no sampling). Evil: inert cells cluster near −7.2 nats; persona vector at answer tokens −2.09; raw mean-difference +3.75. Sycophancy: persona vector at answer tokens +5.19 vs roughly 0.1 for the map-read cells.

The margin — no judge, no sampling, no coherence gate — ranks the cells the same way: the persona vector and raw mean-difference at answer tokens move the model toward the positive pools by 5–11 nats over the inert floor, while both map-read arms sit at the floor at both positions. This rules out the reading that the rate verdict is an artifact of judging degraded text. Per-item margins were not persisted, so this figure's unit is the cell.
