Takeaways
- Held-out per-answer R² at layer 14: full context 0.812, bare query 0.717, pre-query prefix end 0.02, query-averaged prefix −0.02 — with every trait cell resolved at 11.7–16.8× decode-noise floors.
- Per-trait content is query-driven: bare query recovers R² 0.74–0.83 vs 0.87–0.92 full-context; prefix-end persona-average skill (0.17) carries no trait content (−0.13 to +0.16); query-averaged (0.57) stays trait-bearing (0.68–0.78).
- The joint-fit and separately-fitted prefix operators agree far above chance (cosine 0.47 vs null 0.01) but below fold self-agreement (0.84) — so cross-arm geometry reads stay descriptive.
- The context map is high-rank: 763–2,932 held-out-validated channels depending on counting convention (at least 700 under the strictest), refuting the expected tens-of-channels picture.
- Additions (0.92-unit dose) sat at the ≈7.8 no-effect reference (no verdict); erasures moved state 1.8–3.0× and behavior: sycophancy-erase shifts survive matched truncation, hallucination-erase's on-target shift is truncation-sensitive.
- The map is a stable non-normal contraction: traits shrink ≈0.6× and rotate 99.6% of output mass out of the trait span. Caveats: one-condition evil rubric; 256-token generation cap.
Goal
- This experiment in context: The parent #1092 fitted linear maps from four conditionings of the same conversations — full context, bare query, pre-query prefix end, query-averaged prefix — to the answer state and measured their predictive skill. This task characterizes those fitted maps as operators: whether the four fits are one object, how many predictable channels each carries, per-trait readability against a new multi-draw decode-noise ceiling, null-space causal tests, and endomorphism reads (eigenstructure, trait preservation, fixed point). The trait directions come from the #779 monitoring line. The parent's banked prefix-end persona-averaged R² of 0.371 was fit on rows that included trait-battery conversations; this task's battery-excluded rows give 0.174 — not directly comparable (row set and dedup changed together), and the corrected figure roughly halves the previously-circulating pre-query monitorability estimate.
- Broader narrative: Whether pre-question context geometry supports a linear monitor of trait content in upcoming answers — the context→answer map object of the leakage-geometry program: what a linear read of the pre-query state can and cannot see, and whether the directions the fitted map discards are causally inert.
Methodology
Design: Zero-training analysis-and-intervention experiment over a banked activation store (Qwen-2.5-7B-Instruct on a real WildChat/LMSYS conversation corpus). The store was produced by teacher-forcing each banked conversation through the base model and recording the mean residual-stream activation over the answer span (the answer-state summary t1, dimension 3,584) plus input-side states under four conditionings of the same rows: the full context, the bare query, the pre-query prefix end (the state at the last token before the query), and the query-averaged prefix state. Fits use the corrected battery-excluded row set (17,308 rows; the trait-eliciting battery rows the parent's fits had absorbed are excluded), grouped 6-fold by prefix id, fold seed 0. Layer 14 is primary; layers 18/19 replicate the ordering. Phases: stage audit (store shas verified against the pinned revision); a K=5 decode-draw phase over 2,216 contexts for the decode-noise ceiling; the fit battery (four ridge maps + a joint two-input stitch fit, a prefix-to-averaged-state chain test, channel spectra, co-kernel fractions); a steering phase (60 trait-stratum contexts × 27 intervention conditions plus a 3-draw no-intervention baseline = 1,800 generations); graded judging and aggregation. Four named deviations: the channel permutation null substituted within-test-fold target permutation for same-λ refits (the channel estimator is λ-free cross-covariance SVD; recorded in the results JSONs); the tuned-lens robustness decode was skipped (logit lens is the named primary); the averaging-gap vectors were regenerated on the VM after the pod copy was lost (cross-checked below); and the planned pretrained-reads robustness condition (spectra and angles re-read with the pretrained model's activations) was not run — the plan's descope trigger (pod wall over 8 h) did not hold, the omission was unintentional, and every channel-count and angle claim below is therefore instruct-reads only. PRESS-λ selected the lower grid edge on the three deduplicated arms (censored from below; prediction reads unaffected, operator-geometry reads on those arms flagged rank-limited). A zero-GPU follow-up round (run 2026-07-29, code at commit 0307c6cb94) added two reads over the persisted artifacts: a persona-averaged per-trait projection table and a truncation-stratified re-read of the erasure judge deltas (recipes under Evaluation).

Evaluation: The map-skill DV is held-out grouped-fold R² at two grains — per answer (each row's t1) and persona-averaged (per-prefix mean targets) — computed on teacher-forced summaries of on-policy greedy answers (the parent regime; a stated proxy the parent validated against behavioral reads). Every fitted map reports the identity-plus-learned-bias baseline and nearest-neighbor retrieval (euclidean + cosine, chance = k/n_pool) per the standing mapping-baselines rule; the stitch fit's identity baseline is inapplicable (input 7,168 vs output 3,584 — stated). Channels are train-fold whitened cross-covariance components scored by out-of-fold R² against per-component and count-level permutation nulls; per-draw null matrices persist to HF so any alternative counting convention can be recomputed later. Trait readability is held-out R² of projected true vs predicted t1 along each trait direction, gated by the decode-noise ceiling (between-context variance over the within-context K-draw floor, same 2,216-context subset). Causal DVs: hook-free re-captured ‖Δt1‖ (teacher-forced re-capture of persisted steered completions, no hooks — the live captures serve only as rig sanity: at 5× dose the boundary shift was 4.62 ≈ 5α with downstream layer-18 delta 3.7) read against the baseline cross-draw band, and graded judge scores on sycophancy and hallucination rubrics (evil realized on the erase-evil condition only — 60 items, mean 1.9/100, no baseline comparison; a planned-coverage shrinkage). Judge deltas are context-paired bootstrap estimates: per shared context, steered score mean minus that context's non-dropped baseline mean, 10,000 resamples over 57–60 contexts, seed 42, percentile 95% intervals. Two steering degeneracy counts, distinct: 24/1,620 steered rows have Δt1 exactly 0 (all from one deterministic entailment context), and 76/1,620 steered completions are text-identical to at least one baseline draw. Judge hygiene per the project judging rules: 545 parse-error draws re-judged at max_tokens 600 (415 recovered and merged per-draw); residual content drops hallucination 248/9,000, sycophancy 135/9,000, evil 8/300; transport losses 0; worst per-condition drop rate 7.0%; drops are refusal/off-format returns, never coerced. Generation-cap disclosure: steering completions are right-censored at 256 tokens — at-cap rates 56% baseline (100/180), 87% erase-sycophancy (52/60), 75% erase-hallucination (45/60), 22% erase-evil (13/60), 52–60% addition conditions — so length reads are lower bounds and differential truncation is a candidate mechanical contributor to judge shifts on the most-truncated conditions. A per-condition CJK-intrusion scan of the judged pools found 1.2–1.7% intrusion with no condition asymmetry (no adjudication rides it). The addition-arm ≈7.8 no-effect reference is the baseline band median 9.56 scaled by √(2/3) for a mean-of-three baseline. Follow-up-round recipes: (a) averaged-grain trait table — the persisted out-of-fold predictions are re-staged from the HF operator-reads bucket, per-prefix means formed (each held-out prefix's out-of-fold rows averaged within its fold; the target is the prefix's all-row mean), and held-out R² scored along each unit-normalized trait direction, fold-accumulated and pooled, for all four conditionings at layers 14/18/19; row alignment against the committed per-answer R² is hard-asserted per arm and layer (12 of 12 within 1e-4), and the three persona-averaged anchors reproduce (0.799/0.179/0.574 pooled at layer 14). (b) Truncation strata — each steering completion is classed at-cap when its Qwen-token count reaches the 256-token generation cap; the matched-truncation primary keeps a context in a stratum only when the steered completion and at least one baseline draw share the status (baseline mean over same-status draws) and re-runs the same context-paired bootstrap; steered-length terciles within the at-cap stratum probe residual length dependence; cells under 15 contexts are flagged unstable.
Data extraction: No new training data. Inputs: the banked store (real-world conversation corpus, tier-1 realism; store shas spot-checked 9/9 against the pinned revision) and the three trait directions — each a mean-difference direction from the persona-vectors recipe (contrastive positive/negative system-prompt rollouts, judge-filtered, response-averaged activations, difference of means per layer) — at their pinned revision. New data generated: 11,080 K=5 decode draws (temp 1.0) for the noise ceiling, and 1,800 steering-phase completions (on-policy generation under intervention), all persisted to HF with raw text.

Results
Per-answer map skill is query-driven; pre-query states keep only persona-average signal
Out-of-fold R² per conditioning arm at layer 14 (17,308 rows, grouped 6-fold by prefix): per-answer and persona-averaged grains, the identity-plus-bias baseline, nearest-neighbor retrieval accuracy at k = 1 (dashed), fold points in black.

Figure. Per-answer skill lives in the query. Blue: per-answer out-of-fold R²; orange: persona-averaged R²; green: identity-plus-bias baseline; dashed red: retrieval acc@1 (chance 0.0004). Black points are the six prefix-grouped folds; n = 17,308 rows, layer 14.
Full context reaches 0.812 (folds 0.803–0.826) and bare query 0.717 per answer; the pre-query arms read 0.021 and −0.018 per answer, keeping only persona-averaged skill (0.174 prefix end, 0.572 query-averaged). Deeply negative identity-plus-bias baselines rule out trivial transports; retrieval acc@1 is 0.376 and 0.141 against chance 0.0004, and the ordering holds at layers 18/19.
The sibling banked-row estimate of prefix-end persona-averaged skill (0.371) is not directly comparable — battery-row exclusion and dedup changed together; a parity fit under the banked convention reproduced the parent anchor (0.802 vs 0.814).
Trait-direction readability is decode-noise-resolved: query-driven, near-zero pre-query
Held-out per-answer R² along each trait direction (evil, sycophancy, hallucination) for each conditioning arm at layer 14, with the fraction of each direction outside the context map's rank-k90 range overlaid per cell.

Figure. Trait content of individual answers is readable from the query, not the pre-query state. Cell values: held-out R² along each trait direction; co-kernel numbers: fraction of the direction outside the map's k90 range. All cells resolved (signal 11.7–16.8× decode-noise floor).
Every cell is resolved — between-context signal is 11.7–16.8× the decode-noise floor (intraclass correlation 0.92–0.94) — so the ≈0 pre-query cells mean unpredictable, not noise-limited. Bare query recovers 0.74–0.83 vs 0.87–0.92 for full context, and evil is as readable as the other traits wherever anything is readable.
19–27% of each trait direction's answer-side mass lies outside the context map's k90 range (λ-sweep spread 0.06–0.10; evil exactly at the 0.10 stability criterion). This table is per-answer grain; the persona-averaged companion is the next result.
Genuinely pre-query (prefix-end) persona-averaged skill carries no trait content
Held-out persona-averaged R² — per-prefix mean targets over 996 held-out prefixes, fold-accumulated — along each trait direction plus the overall read (all 3,584 coordinates), for the four conditioning arms at layer 14.

Figure. What the genuinely pre-query prefix-end state predicts is trait-free. Cell values: held-out persona-averaged R² along each unit-norm trait direction; bottom row: the overall persona-averaged read. Fold-accumulated over 996 prefixes, layer 14; zero-GPU follow-up round.
Prefix end keeps its modest overall persona-averaged skill (0.174; 0.22–0.25 at layers 18/19) yet reads essentially zero along every trait direction — evil −0.125, sycophancy 0.088, hallucination 0.046, spanning −0.13 to +0.16 across the three layers — so its predictable variance lies off the trait directions. Full context keeps near-per-answer trait readability at this grain (0.847–0.896), with the bare-query and query-averaged arms between (0.60–0.78).
This closes the per-answer table's open grain question and refutes the remaining possibility that the prefix-end arm's persona-averaged skill is trait-bearing: what the genuinely pre-query state does predict about upcoming answers is trait-free persona-average structure. Row alignment against the committed per-answer table is hard-asserted per arm and layer, the three persona-averaged anchors reproduce, and per-fold values sit in the artifact JSON.
The joint and separately-fitted prefix operators are related but not one object, and the prefix deficit is not linearly recoverable
Left half of the figure: agreement between the prefix block of the joint two-input fit and the separately-fitted prefix-end operator (raw and rotation-aligned cosines, fold self-agreement points, shuffled-pairing null). Right half: persona-averaged R² of the direct prefix-end fit, the chain through the query-averaged state, and the direct query-averaged fit.

Figure. Related far above chance, but not the same operator. Raw cosine 0.474 and rotation-aligned 0.755 versus fold self-agreement 0.84–0.88 (points) and shuffled-pairing null p95 0.013/0.221 (dashed). Right: the chain through the query-averaged state adds nothing over the direct prefix-end fit (0.181 = 0.181 vs 0.576).
The sparse crossing does not fully identify the prefix's own effect (0.474 is far above the 0.013 null but well below the 0.84+ self-spread), so all cross-arm geometry here is descriptive. The prefix-end state predicts the query-averaged state well (R² 0.674, identity-plus-bias −2.17), yet the chain exactly matches the direct fit — none of the 0.395 deficit is linearly recoverable.
The deficit concentrates where it matters: the averaged map's top-gain input direction (gain 15.8) has recovery R² −0.14, while recoverable directions sit at gains ≈5. Whether a nonlinear readout recovers it is the companion task's question.
The context map is high-rank: hundreds to thousands of validated channels
Per-component out-of-fold R² spectra (train-fold cross-covariance components) for the four conditioning arms at layers 14/18/19, with the per-component permutation-null p95 dotted; rightmost panel: top canonical correlation squared per layer.

Figure. Hundreds of components clear the null in the context and bare-query maps. Solid: out-of-fold per-component R², sorted by train-fold rank; dotted: per-component permutation-null p95. Rightmost: top canonical correlation squared per layer, all four conditioning arms.
The specified contiguous-above-null rule counts context 2,098, bare query 784, query-averaged 51, prefix-end 20 channels — but the per-component null p95 is deeply negative (≈ −0.59 at the top), so the strictest positive-R² convention gives context 763 (701 contiguous), bare query 797 (513); a false-discovery-controlled companion gives 2,932 and 1,362. Every convention leaves the context map with hundreds to thousands of channels — the tens-of-channels expectation is refuted (per-draw null matrices persist). Scope: instruct-reads only; the pretrained-reads robustness leg was not run (named deviation, Methodology).
The top-canonical-correlation instrument is unreliable on rank-limited arms (unregularized whitened CCA transfers at ≈0.0006 on bare query); ceiling claims rest on R² and channel counts. Output subspaces are partially shared across arms (median principal angles 29–66°; context↔prefix arms 29–38°; null ~84–88°); input subspaces sit at or near null.
The averaging gap concentrates modestly in top answer directions
Cumulative share of the mean squared averaging gap — map-the-average versus average-the-mapped-predictions, 996 prefixes — across sorted answer-basis coordinates, against the same-rank share of total answer-state variance.

Figure. Concentrated, but only ~1.3× more than answer energy itself. Solid: cumulative share of mean squared averaging gap over sorted top-48 answer-PC coordinates; dashed: the trivial reference (same-rank share of total answer variance); horizontal line at 0.5. n = 996 prefixes.
The top-5 coordinates carry 61.8% of the gap energy vs 47.4% for the trivial reference — above the 50% criterion but only modestly above what answer-variance concentration alone predicts.
Provenance: the gap vectors were regenerated on the VM after the pod copy was lost (same recipe, fold seed 0); they reproduce the banked scalars exactly (max abs difference 0.0), and the spread-vs-gap Spearman is +0.130 (p < 1e-4, n = 996) vs +0.144 on the pod copy — drift confined to noise-level statistics.
Causal reads: addition arms under-dosed (no verdict); erasure arms move state and behavior
Hook-free re-captured answer-state shift ‖Δt1‖ per steering condition: points are single generations (60 contexts per condition), bars medians, shaded band the no-intervention cross-draw p10–p90.

Figure. Every addition condition sits inside decode noise; every erasure condition sits above it. ‖Δt1‖ from hook-free teacher-forced re-capture of persisted completions, against the mean of three baseline draws; shaded: baseline cross-draw band (p10–p90); n = 60 contexts per condition.
All 24 addition conditions sit at medians 7.2–8.4, indistinguishable from the ≈7.8 no-effect expectation: the calibrated 0.92-unit dose was an order of magnitude below decode noise, so the positive control failed and kernel-direction inertness stays untested. Four of 48 addition-condition judge comparisons nominally exclude zero (~2.4 expected) — suggestive only.
Erasures moved state 1.8–3.0× the reference and behavior: erase-sycophancy +23.3 on-target but +32.3 off-target on hallucination; erase-hallucination +12.0 on-target only; erase-evil shifted neither rubric while collapsing median length 1,021→160 characters. The matched-truncation re-read keeps both sycophancy-erase shifts among pairs at the 256-token cap (+20.5 on-target, +25.5 off-target over 35 contexts; point deltas positive in every tercile) — differential truncation does not carry them, though non-truncation degradation remains unseparated from trait specificity. Hallucination-erase's on-target shift is truncation-sensitive (+15.5 at-cap, marginal; −1.6 across 14 terminated pairs); erase-evil moves neither rubric within its stable stratum.
As an endomorphism, the context map is a stable non-normal contraction that re-routes trait directions
Norm gain ‖Wv‖/‖v‖ against alignment cos(Wv, v) under the context-arm operator, for the three trait directions (labeled) and its top-20 right-singular directions.

Figure. Traits are rotated and shrunk, not preserved. Red labeled points: the three trait directions (gains 0.60–0.64, cosines 0.07–0.41); grey: top-20 right-singular directions (gains 4.1–10.7 at near-zero alignment). Context-arm operator, layer 14.
The operator passes the non-normality gate (gap 0.132, eigenvector condition number 4,519) with spectral radius 0.910 and all 64 top eigenmodes fold-stable — a stable, strongly non-normal contraction with amplifying directions. Trait directions are rotated-and-shrunk, not near-eigenvectors, and 99.6% of their output mass leaves the three-trait span (the trait gain matrix is not diagonally dominant: hallucination off-diagonal 0.135 vs diagonal 0.129).
The affine fixed point has norm 45.0 — the answer-pool median — with nearest banked answers at cosine 0.66–0.67; its token decode is unreadable, so any "generic answer state" reading rests on the norm and nearest-neighbor reads alone. The top output direction is substantially aligned with the hallucination direction (sign-arbitrary |cos| 0.672).
