Takeaways
- Evil's decode-driven verdict extends down to α=1.5: f_d 0.94–1.01 with CI lower bounds 0.85–0.93 against the 0.75 threshold under all three CJK-intrusion treatments, at mid-cliff install (Δ_both 61.6).
- At α=2, evil (f_d 1.008–1.072) and sycophancy (0.928–0.936) remain decode-driven under raw, exclusion, and zeroing scoring; evil sits near scale-top (both-arm mean 86.03, ceiling check fired).
- Decode-arm CJK intrusion for evil/hallucination rises from 23%/7.5% at α=1.5 to 84.5%/92% at α=3, leaving 13–30 of 200 draws for exclusion scoring; the interpretable window is roughly α=1.5–2.
- Sycophancy reads mixed-leaning-decode at α=1.5 (f_d 0.81–0.83, weak install Δ_both 11.3) and stays computable at α=3 (30% intrusion): raw 0.928 decode-driven, exclusion/zeroing marginally mixed.
- Hallucination never classifies decode-driven under intrusion-robust scoring at any interpretable dose: α=1.5 CIs span 0.65–1.30, α=2 exclusion/zeroing read mixed, α=3 zeroing deltas turn negative (−14.3).
- Prefill-only steering stays near baseline at all five doses (evil Δ=0 throughout; sycophancy Δ≤2.05; hallucination Δ≤7.4): the context representation alone does not commit behavior.
Goal
This experiment in context: This experiment applies a causal timing intervention — adding a persona-direction vector α × r_B[L] at layer 20 in either the prefill phase only, the decode phase only, both phases, or neither — to three persona behaviors (evil, sycophancy, hallucination) across a dose ladder (α ∈ {1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4}; the 1.5 and 3 doses were added by the alpha-subgrid follow-up round) on Qwen-2.5-7B-Instruct. It directly tests whether persona-behavior expression is committed during the prefill (context encoding) pass or during the autoregressive decode steps, extending the representation-geometry characterization of issues #779 and #1415.
Broader narrative: The project's open question is whether a persona is a property of the context representation (fixed at prefill) or an ongoing generative process (reinforced decode-step by decode-step). If decode dominates, continuous activation-steering or token-by-token interventions would be the effective defense channel; if prefill dominates, one-shot context representations suffice. The α=2 convention-robust results support decode dominance for evil and sycophancy, while hallucination's treatment sensitivity at moderate dose leaves its timing attribution open. High-dose results are unreliable due to language collapse.
Methodology
Design: Four-arm causal timing experiment. A DeltaHook registered on layer 20 applies delta = α × r_B[L] in four configurations: prefill_only (all positions of the first forward pass only), decode_only (skips the first forward pass, edits every subsequent decode step), both (all positions at all steps), neither (baseline). The fraction f_d = Δ_decode / Δ_both quantifies how much of the "both" effect is achieved by decode-phase intervention alone. Lattice thresholds: decode-driven iff the CI(f_d) lower bound exceeds 0.75; prefill-committed iff CI(f_d) falls entirely within (−0.25, +0.25); mixed otherwise. Persona-direction vectors r_B are reused from the #779 bank: per behavior, the mean difference of response-averaged activations between contrastive positive/negative system-prompt rollouts, judge-filtered per the persona-vectors recipe, computed per layer over a 20-question extraction set; the hook applies the layer-20 context-level direction. Three behaviors: evil (villainous persona; labeled "scheming" in figures), sycophancy (agree-with-user), hallucination (confident factual confabulation). Dose ladder: α ∈ {1, 2, 4}. Eval: 20 questions per behavior, 10 draws per question per arm, temperature=1.0.
Rounds: The parent round ran α ∈ {1, 2, 4}. Follow-up round fu1 (alpha-subgrid-clean-window) added α ∈ {1.5, 3} on the identical four-arm rig: 420 cells (3 behaviors × [3 steered arms × 2 alphas + shared neither] × 20 questions), 10 draws each (4,200 completions); all 420 planned cells realized. The fu1 grid started on a GCE 2×A100-80 FLEX_START instance, was preempted at grid unit ~416/420, and completed on a RunPod 2×H100 failover pod with raw completions landing idempotently under the fu1 HF prefix. The K2 dose-ladder coherence gate stayed silent (both-arm coherent-draw rates 0.97–1.00 across all six behavior × alpha lanes, threshold 0.50).
Key deviation from plan: vLLM was not used for generation because registering PyTorch forward hooks requires direct model access; batched HF model.generate() was used instead. This is a vLLM-deviation caveat carrying a potential throughput penalty but no measurement bias.
Prefill hook engagement: 0 of 200 eval completions under the prefill_only arm at α=4 had identical text to the neither arm, verifying the hook was engaged during prefill.
Training: N/A — no model training. Evaluation uses zero-shot inference on the base Qwen/Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct model with pre-computed persona-direction vectors r_B (28 layers × 3584 dims, revision 037fcbb210bc52c459959b0746cc268fe08bae96).
Evaluation: Graded judge claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929, scoring 0–100 per completion (reason-then-score rubric), 5 draws per completion at temperature=1.0, mean-aggregated. Binary rate = fraction of completions with mean ≥ 50. Eval questions: the 20-question persona-vectors evaluation bank per behavior class (bare context), disjoint by construction from the 20 extraction questions that built r_B (overlap verified empty at the P0 artifact check) — disjointness guards double-dipping on the direction's own construction set. Δ = arm mean − neither mean. Bootstrap B=2000, seed=0, unit=question (cluster-level). Two CI variants were computed per plan: frozen-at-alpha and selection-inherited (the operating-alpha rule re-applied inside each bootstrap resample); they coincide for evil and sycophancy at the operating alpha and differ only in hallucination's lower bound (0.515 frozen vs 0.532 inherited) — selection-inherited values are quoted throughout. K1 gate: ≥1 behavior with Δ_both ≥ 10 and CI excluding 0. K2 coherence gate: whitespace-token-based (≥5 whitespace tokens, no refusal opener), language-blind — passed all cells (steered-arm minimum 88.5% at hallucination/decode_only/a1; both-arm minimum 93.5% at hallucination/a1). The ceiling check (plan §7: a both-arm mean score > 85 excludes that alpha from operating-alpha selection) FIRED at evil/a2 (both-arm mean=86.03), excluding evil/a2 from operating selection; frac_gt90 is a diagnostic metric only and is not the ceiling criterion.
fu1 judge instrument (truncation check per the judging rules): The first fu1 judge pass at max_tokens=300 showed arm-asymmetric parse-failure drops peaking at 42.5% (hallucination/decode_only at α=3), so the full fu1 set was re-judged at max_tokens=600 against a fresh cache. Drops did not collapse at the doubled budget (that arm 34.8%; aggregate 7.65% → 6.15%): 1,251 of 1,291 residual failures are EMPTY judge responses on degenerate steered text — content-class non-verdicts, dropped per the drop-never-coerce rule, not truncation — and per-arm means shifted ≤1.5 points across budgets, so retained-draw means are budget-stable. The 600-token scores (judge_fu1_mt600) are canonical; the 300-token pass (judge_fu1) is retained as a comparison artifact. fu1 per-arm content-drop rates at max_tokens=600: hallucination decode/both 34.8%/32.4% and evil decode/both 21.2%/19.7% at α=3; every α=1.5 arm ≤8.1%; transport losses zero across all 21 arms.

Eval-questions provenance caveat: Evil eval questions are original. Sycophancy and hallucination eval questions were subsequently regenerated following a data-loss incident (source files were lost), and are carried as a data-provenance caveat. This does not constitute a gate failure per plan §4.
Conciseness acknowledgment: total content prose runs ~1,505 words against the multi-round budget (WARN acknowledged) — five folded revision rounds plus the fu1 follow-up round; the α=1.5 and α=3 lattice results each pair the aggregate figure with its per-question per-unit companion and may exceed the 120-word per-result WARN cap (acknowledged); Takeaways bullet caps are met.

Results
Decode-arm steering produces large behavioral shifts at every dose; prefill-only stays near baseline
The dose-ladder figure plots mean Δ graded score from the neither arm for each steered arm at α ∈ {1, 2, 4}, one panel per behavior (evil panels labeled scheming); CIs are quoted in prose rather than drawn.

Figure. Decode-arm and both-arm steering shift judged behavior far more than prefill-only at every dose. Mean Δ graded score vs the no-steering arm across α ∈ {1, 2, 4}, one panel per behavior; the dagger marks the ceiling check firing at evil/α=2. N=200 draws per point.
At α=4 (N=200 draws per arm): evil decode Δ=37.0 CI (31.5, 42.2) vs prefill Δ=0.0; sycophancy decode Δ=27.4 CI (21.3, 33.8) vs prefill Δ=2.05 CI (1.36, 2.72); hallucination decode Δ=21.8 CI (8.84, 32.6) vs prefill Δ=7.40 CI (1.30, 14.2).

Figure. The decode-arm advantage is consistent across questions. Per-question mean Δ from the neither arm at α=4 for the three steered arms (20 questions per behavior, 10 draws × 5 judge draws each); hallucination's prefill arm shows wide question-level spread (roughly −20 to +60).
Question-level spread is smallest for evil and widest for hallucination, matching hallucination's wide aggregate CI.
At operating alpha under raw scoring, evil classifies decode-driven; sycophancy and hallucination straddle the threshold
The figure plots the decode fraction f_d = Δ_decode/Δ_both and prefill fraction f_p = Δ_prefill/Δ_both at α=4 with question-cluster bootstrap 95% CIs, against the 0.75 decode-driven and 0.25 prefill-negligible thresholds.

Figure. Only evil's decode fraction clears the 0.75 threshold with its whole CI. f_d (blue) and f_p (orange) per behavior at α=4, question-cluster bootstrap CIs (B=2000); dashed line = 0.75 decode-driven threshold, dotted line = 0.25. Fractions computed under raw scoring.
Evil f_d=1.17 CI (1.02, 1.37) lies entirely above 0.75; sycophancy f_d=0.84 CI (0.71, 0.98) and hallucination f_d=0.78 CI (0.53, 0.96) span the threshold — mixed/indeterminate. These raw-score fractions inherit the α=4 CJK contamination quantified below, so the α=2 lattice is the headline read.
Sycophancy at α=2 shows decode dominance free of the evil ceiling
The ceiling check fired for evil at α=2 (both-arm mean 86.03 > 85), excluding that alpha from evil's operating selection. Sycophancy at α=2 is ceiling-free: both Δ=19.75 CI (15.44, 25.23), decode Δ=18.33 CI (14.57, 22.83), prefill Δ=0.953 CI (0.510, 1.431), N=200 draws per arm; f_d=0.928 with cluster-bootstrap CI (0.830, 1.050) — decode-driven, and stronger evidence than sycophancy's threshold-spanning α=4 CI. The per-question α=2 view below is the per-unit data behind this cell and the three-treatment lattice.

Figure. At α=2 the decode and both arms separate from neither and prefill-only question by question. Per-question mean graded score (0–100) for every condition (neither, prefill-only, decode-only, both) at α=2, raw scoring, 20 questions × 10 draws per behavior; evil panels labeled scheming.
Sycophancy's decode-arm gain is spread across most questions rather than driven by a few outliers; evil's decode and both arms sit near scale-top on every question — the ceiling signature.
CJK language intrusion severely contaminates decode-arm completions; the coherence gate is language-blind
The K2 coherence gate passed all cells (steered-arm minimum 88.5%) but does not detect CJK-script intrusion. A per-arm scan of all raw completions for CJK, kana, and hangul codepoints shows arm-asymmetric contamination:
| Behavior | Arm | Alpha | CJK-intruded / total draws | Intrusion rate |

| hallucination | prefill_only | 4 | 11/200 | 5.5% |
| hallucination | neither | — | 15/200 | 7.5% |
Decode-side arms are severely intruded at α=2–4 while prefill-only and neither stay at the 1.5–7.5% baseline, confounding the decode-minus-neither contrast. For evil/decode_only/α=4 the conventions diverge: zeroing intruded rows gives mean 3.54 (decode Δ collapses from 37.0 to ~3.5); exclusion leaves 32 clean completions, mean 22.03.

Figure. CJK-robust rescoring collapses evil's α=4 decode effect but leaves sycophancy's α=2 effect intact. Mean score Δ from neither for decode_only and both arms under raw, zeroing (intruded scored 0), and exclusion scoring: evil at α=4 (left), sycophancy at α=2 (right).
The convention gap indexes how much each cell's decode effect rests on intruded completions: large for evil at α=4, negligible for sycophancy at α=2, so every α=4 verdict is convention-dependent.
Arm-asymmetric judge content drops corroborate CJK-driven contamination
Judge content drops (malformed or refused judge returns) are arm-asymmetric at α=4; transport-class losses are zero everywhere.
| Behavior | Arm | Alpha | Content drops / total judge draws | Drop rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| evil | decode_only | 2 | 146/1000 | 14.6% |
| evil | both | 2 | 175/1000 | 17.5% |
| evil | decode_only | 4 | 68/1000 | 6.8% |
| evil | both | 4 | 100/1000 | 10.0% |
| evil | prefill_only | 4 | 0/1000 | 0.0% |
| evil | neither | — | 0/1000 | 0.0% |
| sycophancy | decode_only | 4 | 29/1000 | 2.9% |
| sycophancy | both | 4 | 22/1000 | 2.2% |
| sycophancy | prefill_only | 4 | 0/1000 | 0.0% |
| hallucination | decode_only | 4 | 268/1000 | 26.8% |
| hallucination | both | 4 | 308/1000 | 30.8% |
| hallucination | prefill_only | 4 | 26/1000 | 2.6% |
| hallucination | neither | — | 17/1000 | 1.7% |
Drops concentrate in the decode-side arms — the judge refused or returned malformed output on CJK text — and are zero or near-zero for prefill-only and neither. For hallucination decode_only at α=4, 26.8% of judge draws were content-dropped, so that arm mean rests on roughly 73% of the intended draws and is biased toward completions the judge would score — likely the minority without extreme CJK intrusion.
Evil and sycophancy decode-driven timing at α=2 holds under all three CJK-intrusion treatments; hallucination flips to mixed
The figure plots f_d at α=2 per behavior under the three scoring treatments, with question-cluster bootstrap 95% CIs (B=2000, seed=42) against the lattice thresholds.

Figure. Evil and sycophancy stay above the 0.75 decode-driven threshold under every treatment; hallucination's exclusion and zeroing CIs do not. f_d with 95% CIs per behavior × treatment at α=2 (20 questions, 200 draws per arm); dashed line = 0.75 threshold; evil labeled scheming.
Exact values (N zeroed = decode_only / both):
| Behavior | Treatment | f_d | 95% CI | Verdict | N kept (decode / both) | N zeroed (decode / both) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| evil | raw | 1.008 | (0.983, 1.032) | decode-driven | 200 / 200 | — |
| evil | exclusion | 1.026 | (0.993, 1.058) | decode-driven | 108 / 102 | — |
| evil | zeroing | 1.072 | (0.932, 1.235) | decode-driven | 200 / 200 | 90 / 94 |
| hallucination | raw | 0.890 | (0.802, 0.990) | decode-driven | 200 / 200 | — |
| hallucination | exclusion | 0.834 | (0.716, 0.973) | mixed | 148 / 149 | — |
| hallucination | zeroing | 0.768 | (0.546, 1.016) | mixed | 200 / 200 | 50 / 44 |
| sycophancy | raw | 0.928 | (0.830, 1.050) | decode-driven | 200 / 200 | — |
| sycophancy | exclusion | 0.930 | (0.819, 1.040) | decode-driven | 189 / 185 | — |
| sycophancy | zeroing | 0.936 | (0.821, 1.081) | decode-driven | 200 / 200 | 11 / 15 |
Evil and sycophancy classify decode-driven under all three treatments: evil's exclusion arm drops 45–47% of decode/both draws yet f_d rises to 1.026, and sycophancy (5.5–7.5% intruded) is unaffected. Hallucination flips from decode-driven under raw scoring to mixed under both intrusion-robust treatments (exclusion CI 0.716–0.973; zeroing CI 0.546–1.016). The ceiling check fired for evil at this alpha (both-arm mean 86.03 > 85), so evil's deltas sit near scale-top and its tight f_d≈1 CIs partly reflect ceiling compression.
Evil stays decode-driven at the weaker α=1.5 dose under all three CJK treatments; sycophancy and hallucination read mixed
The figure plots the decode fraction f_d = Δ_decode/Δ_both at α=1.5 per behavior under raw, exclusion (intruded draws removed), and zeroing (intruded draws scored 0) treatments, with question-cluster bootstrap 95% CIs (B=2000, seed=42) against the lattice thresholds; the per-question companion below is the per-unit data behind these aggregates.

Figure. Evil's decode fraction clears the 0.75 threshold under every treatment at α=1.5; sycophancy and hallucination CIs cross it. f_d with 95% CIs per behavior × treatment (20 questions, 200 draws per arm, cluster bootstrap B=2000); dashed line = 0.75 decode-driven threshold; evil labeled scheming.
| Behavior | Treatment | f_d | 95% CI | Verdict | N kept (decode / both) | N zeroed (decode / both) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| evil | raw | 0.992 | (0.931, 1.052) | decode-driven | 200 / 200 | — |
| evil | exclusion | 1.010 | (0.933, 1.090) | decode-driven | 154 / 156 | — |
| evil | zeroing | 0.942 | (0.852, 1.064) | decode-driven | 200 / 200 | 46 / 40 |
| hallucination | raw | 0.904 | (0.705, 1.117) | mixed | 200 / 200 | — |
| hallucination | exclusion | 0.854 | (0.649, 1.075) | mixed | 185 / 176 | — |
| hallucination | zeroing | 0.939 | (0.670, 1.304) | mixed | 200 / 200 | 15 / 23 |
| sycophancy | raw | 0.825 | (0.741, 0.909) | mixed | 200 / 200 | — |
| sycophancy | exclusion | 0.833 | (0.740, 0.925) | mixed | 188 / 188 | — |
| sycophancy | zeroing | 0.807 | (0.714, 0.921) | mixed | 200 / 200 | 12 / 12 |
Evil classifies decode-driven under all three treatments at mid-cliff install (Δ_both 61.6, between 5.8 at α=1 and 86.0 at α=2), with decode-arm intrusion 23% (exclusion keeps 154/200 draws). Sycophancy's CIs cross 0.75 under every treatment (raw 0.741–0.909) at weak install (Δ_both 11.3); hallucination stays mixed with wide CIs (0.705–1.117, Δ_both 26.0). The α=1.5 decode-driven extension is evil-specific.

Figure. Evil's decode and both arms separate from neither and prefill-only on most questions at α=1.5; sycophancy's per-question gaps stay small. Per-question mean graded score (0–100) per arm (neither, prefill-only, decode-only, both), raw scoring, 20 questions × 10 draws per behavior; evil labeled scheming.
The dose ladder places the CJK collapse between α=2 and 3
The figure plots Δ_both (raw scoring, mean graded score minus the neither arm) against α ∈ {1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4} per behavior, with the interpretable window (α ≤ 2) and the CJK-affected region shaded; the per-question data behind the ladder points appear in the α=1.5, α=2, and α=3 sections.

Figure. Installed effect rises through α=3 for hallucination and sycophancy while evil peaks at α=2; the α=3–4 points sit in the CJK-affected region. Δ_both (raw) per behavior at five doses, 200 draws per arm-dose (evil: 5.8, 61.6, 86.0, 72.4, 31.6 across the ladder); evil labeled scheming.
Installed effect rises through α=3 for hallucination (67.4) and sycophancy (47.4) while evil peaks at 86.0 at α=2, and all three fall back at α=4. Decode-arm CJK intrusion rises in parallel — evil 23%, 45%, 84.5% at α=1.5, 2, 3 — so the collapse sits between α=2 and 3 and the α=3–4 raw points are convention-dependent.
At α=3 only sycophancy retains a computable timing verdict
The figure plots the decode fraction f_d = Δ_decode/Δ_both at α=3 per behavior under raw, exclusion, and zeroing treatments with question-cluster bootstrap 95% CIs (B=2000, seed=42), drawing degenerate exclusion cells as explicit N/A notes rather than bars; the per-question companion below is the per-unit data behind these aggregates.

Figure. Only sycophancy keeps a computable three-treatment read at α=3. f_d with 95% CIs per treatment; evil and hallucination exclusion cells are drawn as N/A notes (84.5% and 92% decode-arm intrusion; 30 and 13 of 200 draws remain); evil labeled scheming.
| Behavior | Treatment | f_d | 95% CI | Verdict | N kept (decode / both) | N zeroed (decode / both) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| evil | raw | 1.073 | (1.009, 1.145) | decode-driven | 200 / 200 | — |
| evil | exclusion | — | — | N/A — degenerate (NaN deltas) | 30 / 31 | — |
| evil | zeroing | 1.049 | (0.698, 1.615) | mixed (deltas collapse to ~10) | 200 / 200 | 169 / 169 |
| hallucination | raw | 0.934 | (0.880, 0.984) | decode-driven | 200 / 200 | — |
| hallucination | exclusion | — | — | N/A — degenerate (NaN deltas) | 13 / 18 | — |
| hallucination | zeroing | 1.267 | (0.831, 2.940) | not interpretable (negative deltas: decode −14.3, both −11.3) | 200 / 200 | 184 / 181 |
| sycophancy | raw | 0.928 | (0.837, 1.014) | decode-driven | 200 / 200 | — |
| sycophancy | exclusion | 0.873 | (0.745, 0.982) | mixed | 140 / 139 | — |
| sycophancy | zeroing | 0.895 | (0.715, 1.094) | mixed | 200 / 200 | 60 / 60 |
Raw f_d at α=3 reads decode-driven for all three behaviors, but only sycophancy (30% decode-arm intrusion) survives intrusion-robust scoring, with exclusion/zeroing lower bounds at 0.71–0.75. For evil and hallucination the treatments break down: exclusion is undefined and zeroing collapses evil's deltas to ~10 while turning hallucination's negative — convention-dependent, with no interpretable verdict. Judge content drops corroborate the collapse: 34.8%/32.4% (hallucination decode/both) and 21.2%/19.7% (evil) at α=3 versus ≤8.1% on every α=1.5 arm, with zero transport losses.

Figure. Per-question raw scores behind the α=3 lattice: decode and both arms sit near scale-top for evil and hallucination on nearly every question. Per-question mean graded score (0–100) per arm (neither, prefill-only, decode-only, both), raw scoring, 20 questions × 10 draws per behavior; evil labeled scheming.
