Daily — 2026-08-05 (heavy autonomous merge day; 08-04 nightly died to 529s — recovered tonight)

updated: 2026-09-03

What happened

  • #1491 scale ladder completed compute: all 6 rungs (0.5B → 32B) captured + fit on pod-1491 (8×H200), every rung upload-verified (PASS markers 07:17Z–09:51Z), pod terminated after verified-done teardown; interpretation-critic PASS (round 2) and clean-result-critic PASS same day; a greedy-decode follow-up pod (pod-1491-greedy) provisioned 17:23Z. Also filed #2098 from an implementer-raised workflow candidate.
  • #1739 ran a large user-directed inline day: per-behavior jobd/r2aug units (evil, sycophancy, hallucination), evil-OOD-spread pilots (a1a/a1b/a2), a syco-OOD round + cap-hit re-gen, and a Result-2 fair-protocol refit — ~12 pod launches, all with dispatch-time re-attach handles and inline-round upload-verification PASSes.
  • 11 infra/workflow tasks merged to main via Step 10d auto-complete: #1988, #1992, #1996, #1997, #2004, #2006, #2022, #2079, #2082, #2085, #2092, plus #2104/#2105/#2106/#2108 filed-and-advancing overnight. The workflow-fix pipeline filed 12+ new tasks today (#2082–#2108 range); the infra dispatch cap (5) was pinned full for much of the day with the watcher backstop dispatching.
  • #2054 lattice: phase A generation completed (r7 draw 32,000) after supply-constraint relaunches; two designed fail-loud gate firings on the answers-pool build (18:03Z, 00:43Z) drove same-session fixes. #2061: two plan-contradiction replans (plan v13 approved 03:20Z) plus a sparsify-pin and loader-parity-gate failure chain — session pivoted per the replan rail. #2091: GPU phases P0–P2 complete, pod terminated after verified uploads (05:15Z); two failure_class: code markers on the reap/judge stages under active fix.
  • The 2026-08-04 nightly /daily died at 07:03Z on repeated API 529 Overloaded errors ~36 min in (session 970a1dd6) — stub + miner brief only; the 06:00 healthcheck correctly alerted the husk but the backfill never ran. Tonight's run recovered the 08-04 sweep via the SKILL.md Edit-in-place husk branch (see logs/daily/2026-08-04.md) and filed an auto-backfill fix (see Applied).
  • Codex twins were quota-blocked the whole day (codex-quota-exhausted-until 2026-08-06T13:26Z) — every review round ran single-Claude per the #1204 no-show fallback, correctly logged per-round.

Applied workflow improvements

  1. Target: .claude/rules/gotchas.md — what: four probed traps documented (VM git 2.34.1 lacks merge-tree --write-tree; py3.11 f-string nested-quote SyntaxErrors in one-liners; bare load_dotenv() from stdin crashes on frame-walk; task-marker versions are per-kind, global watcher thresholds make other kinds invisible) — commit: 8f75e3dc6b Why: each fired ≥1 time on 2026-08-05/06 (miner 1 P15/P17, miner 3 P12, 08-04 recovery P16) — every one was misread before being diagnosed. Verified: doc-only append; repo-wide workflow_lint --check-references + --check-asks PASS after commit.
  2. Target: .claude/rules/pod-config.md — what: new section "pods.conf is a REGISTRY, not an ssh config — and the ssh MCP hard-caps at 30 s" — commit: 103ac6175b Why: two probe-side traps fired (miner 5 P22: two failed ssh -F pods.conf attempts; miner 4 P15: ssh_execute 30 s cap defeated an inner timeout 180). Verified: doc-only append; lint gate PASS.

Filed for review (route 2 — each lands via its own /issue --auto pipeline; all tagged daily-auto-filed):

  1. filed for review #2115: Step 10d lint-gate pending-call wedge — ~18 sessions wedged 1.2–2.4 h each (~20 h aggregate) on a never-executing gate Bash; rejections cluster at two batch-clear times; fixes: detached-script gate shape (the shape that worked in-fleet), hook timeout fields (14 PreToolUse hooks have none — probed), watcher pending-tool-call fast lane. Names #1994/#2039/#2084.
  2. filed for review #2110: CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_COMPACT_WINDOW override not reaching spawned sessions — a session spawned 12 h after the #2073 fix still compacted at preTokens ~242–253 K and thrashed 9.5 h (probed compactMetadata scan).
  3. filed for review #2117: watcher reconcile-stop misses error-storming sessions on terminal tasks — the thrashing #2004 session burned 4 h after a sibling completed the task.
  4. filed for review #2111: ownership-probe hardening, 3 probed gaps — pre-stop probe (a live implementer was killed on a false phantom-dispatch read), detached-children probe after subagent death (#1491 duplicate-writer race), ops-stats same-turn re-grep (Thomas corrected stale fleet stats twice).
  5. filed for review #2116: Step 5a sibling-issue sync pathspec is .py-only — synced #2054 tests arrived without scripts/issue2054_dispatch.sh; two gates burned (~30 + ~45 min); glob still absent on main (grep-verified). One filing for the #1988 + #2004 parks.
  6. filed for review #2112: test_setsid_child_survives_group_kill is env-brittle (subreaper ppid≠1) — red in gate contexts, green at compose time; one filing for both #1996 parks.
  7. filed for review #2113: cron_daily_healthcheck.sh auto-launches the /daily backfill on missing/husk detection — alert-only left the 08-04 sweep unmined ~24 h.
  8. filed for review #2114: nightly step9c known-red ledger refresh cron — stale ledgers forced 31–40 min mid-gate refreshes in 3 sessions.
  9. filed for review #2118: test-order polluter — test_issue1482_densesae_fullwidth.py makes a test_backend_poll node fail in multi-file runs (8-round bisect, minimal pair reproduces).
  10. filed for review #2121: helper CLI ergonomics — address-concern silently truncated a 1,785-char disposition to 196 chars (add --summary-file); clean_experiment_downloads.py rejects --dry-run.
  11. filed for review #2122: guard_repo_root_branch.sh false positives on ssh remote payloads (×2) and the sanctioned /tmp scratch-worktree cd-form merge.
  12. filed for review #2123: four verifier gaps — plan-version immutability lint, agent model:-pin lint, verify_plan duplicate-GPU-token FAIL, planned_wall_h WARN (the #2091 phase-ETA tripwire silently disarmed).
  13. filed for review #2124: llm-judging rule 26 — pilot draw count must satisfy n_draws ≥ 1/threshold (the #2091 gate was unsatisfiable at 16 draws/arm); classification rubrics pilot-gated explicitly (#1739 tactic wave failed at scale).
  14. filed for review #2119: upload-policy consumer-side manifest-first staging for sharded artifacts — two same-day breakages at the 9.5 MB seam; an upload-verification PASS had a hole exactly there.
  15. filed for review #2125: pod-side-reporting — launch wrappers/heartbeats probe pod-side liveness before declaring LAUNCH FAILED / UNREACHABLE (two false negatives + two false alarms on #1739).
  16. filed for review #2120: two reviewer/implementer checklist items — CVD-scoped nvidia-smi verdicts (4/9 rung-jobs killed by a whole-host max, #1333 class) and schema-from-artifact loaders (#2061 fabricated shard schema cost a full round).
  17. filed for review #2133: plan-sizing ground truth — measured artifact-side n_train rows (the #2061 n<d replan) + regime-change reruns need a measured pilot basis (#1491 greedy realized ~2× the approved GPU-h).
  18. filed for review #2126: five gate-recipe defects in Step 9c/10d — unpinned selector key (whole-suite 31-min run), no re-sync before gate re-runs, detached-launch substitution held open, merge-guard process-substitution false positive, resync recovery chokes on added files.
  19. filed for review #2127: vm_disk_guard sweeps top-level /tmp gate/smoke scratch (~70 GiB unswept at 98 % root disk) + records the HF-backedness deletion gate Thomas set.
  20. filed for review #2134: pre-dispatch staleness pass for queued tasks — Thomas had to drive the audit that found blocked tasks instructing a removed gate + 11 queued tasks colliding on CLAUDE.md.
  21. filed for review #2128: spawn_session.py stop --kill bounded-wait + TERM of the inner claude pid (a daemon-untracked zombie held #2061 ~24 h).
  22. filed for review #2129: watcher normalizer for claude-fable-5[1m] in settings.json — the built-in /model command re-planted the #545 fleet-outage id; caught by luck.
  23. filed for review #2130: issue1491 ladder ceiling must assert n_pairs == expected — a shard crash left 875/1000 pairs silently accepted; a user-facing number rested on it ~9.5 h.

Other problems & notes

  • Route 3 (needs you), filed as tracked daily-held needs-human tasks: (a) #2131 — HF storage 16.0 TB vs 10 TB soft ceiling (−5,997 GB headroom): #2091's preflight FAILed on it, #1491's Path B flagged LFS-403 risk; deletion/upgrade is user-only (carve-out: destructive + spends money). First candidate: the parked adapters/issue_397 ~242 GB purge. (b) #2132 — perform/schedule the #681 worktree bind cutover: 212 GB of worktrees on the 97 %-full root disk while /mnt/eps-data has 782 G free (probed findmnt/df); the migration breaks live sessions, so the window is your call (carve-out: destructive/irreversible). #2099 tracks only the doc-claim side.
  • The 2026-08-04 nightly /daily died to the 529 storm (session 970a1dd6, 07:03:25Z, ~36 min in). The 06:00 healthcheck alerted the husk correctly, but no backfill ran all day — recovered TONIGHT via the SKILL.md Edit-in-place husk branch (see logs/daily/2026-08-04.md); the auto-backfill fix is filed (#2113).
  • 529 Overloaded storm, ~06:47–11:52Z: killed implementer spawns 5× on #1997, boot-killed sessions on #1988/#1217/#2004, and errored orchestrator turns fleet-wide. Thomas caught that the retry hook matched 429-only and ordered the fix; it landed same day (on-stop-429-retry.sh now covers 529, 24/24 tests, pushed). Residual for /memory-sleep (global file, out of /daily scope): ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md § Sub-agent rate limits still reads 429-only.
  • Codex quota outage all day (sentinel live until 2026-08-06T13:26Z): every review round fleet-wide ran single-Claude per the #1204 no-show fallback — logged correctly per round; independence degradation is the known cost. The user-requested Opus-model test on #1217 boot-died to the storm and was never re-run (INCONCLUSIVE — worth re-queuing if still wanted).
  • skipped filing: premise retracted upstream — the #1985/#1996 parked candidates proposing critic-lean footprint trims / a deflection-plan review-floor exemption were premised on the 08-04 critic-lean thrashes; #1996's resume note (2026-08-05T15:15:42Z) root-causes those to the reduced-window enrollment released by #2073 (commit 2de759b9d7), and the retry critic run APPROVEd cleanly. Routed-records posted on both parks.
  • Step C parked-candidate sweep: 8 candidates enumerated, all dispositioned — 3 filings (#2116 covers the #1988+#2004 pair; #2112 covers both #1996 setsid parks), 1 deduped against completed #2022 (sparse-cone fix landed, grep-verified), 2 premise-retracted (above), 1 landed-fix (#2006's lens-pin park — commit ec29957b3a reconciled it; node passes at compose time). Routed-records posted on all 8. 1 benign skipped row (#1333 json-decode, relevant_kind: false); unmatched_record_fps ~280 refs — the standing #1703 advisory backlog, unchanged in character.
  • Retraction re-check: 8 marker-mined problems scanned, 2 skipped (the C1/C4 pair above); transcript-mined problems tail-checked by the miners' probed/inferred discipline.
  • Driver suspect hygiene: the landed-fix/closed-sibling probes flagged 10 suspects across the batches; all were eyeballed and 9 re-filed as false matches (e.g. the landed --note alias commit ≠ the --summary-file gap; #1972 created the sync arm whose .sh gap remains). One (helper-cli-ergonomics → 6b7c5b90f0) was a genuine near-miss caught correctly by the probe before the eyeball confirmed the difference.
  • #2054 answers-pool integrity gates fired twice by design (430 cross-variant conflicts at 18:03Z; r10 seal at 00:43Z) — fail-loud worked; fixes landed in-session with a 10,134-line diagnosis artifact. The 9.5 MB shard-seam class it exposed is filed (#2119).
  • #1491 notes: the compute-deviation (~2× the approved GPU-h) was disclosed proactively and marker-recorded — the sizing-basis fix is filed (#2133); the matched-target-disclosure rule failed at its target surface once (Thomas had to ask "is this on matched text") and the spend-authorization rule once (Path B offered as "your call" while the pod idled at ~$44/h — Thomas: "run it now"). Both are compliance misses on existing rules, recorded as recurrence data.
  • #2054 fleet-ops session killed a healthy session on a false phantom-dispatch read (15:32:46Z, live implementer 10 min in; two correction markers) — the pre-stop probe fix is filed (#2111).
  • Voice/register recurrences: unglossed "ceiling"/"Path A/B" labels forced two definitional asks (#1491); #2091 planning prose needed ~6 gloss/simplification turns; a session-only monitor was delivered where a durable crontab was wanted (#2091, re-asked 24 min later). All existing-rule compliance data.
  • Stale untracked root draft scripts/issue1482_blind_read_api.py turned repo-root lint red twice; Thomas ordered "clean it up" and open #2076 tracks routing it through api_dispatch. Still present untracked at compose time — #2076 should land or the file be removed.
  • bootstrap_pod.sh residuals: the sparse-cone ssh-payload fix landed in-session (ISSUE_VAL baked into the payload — grep-verified on main) and #2108 is live on the reporting-block bug; a pin test asserting the payload carries the issue cone is a candidate to fold into #2108's plan (deferred here to avoid racing its live session; the fail-open preflight observation from 08-04 — workload dispatched despite Pre-flight Check: FAIL — is also adjacent to #2108's file, noted for its planner).
  • Deferred-not-dropped: batch-drain vs sync-drain parity audit beyond the #1434 seam fixed in-session (batch_judge bare-scalar drop — fixed, commit trail on #1739); Monitor-heartbeat UNREACHABLE-vs-terminated template + pod.py list-ephemeral ownership column (nice-to-haves, evidence noted in #2125's body); gitleaks HF-revision false-positive config tweak (existing .gitleaksignore carve-out worked); worktree fork-vintage periodic re-merges (sessions handled it via the documented rebase recipe; #2126's per-run resync covers the sharpest edge).
  • git hygiene: gc.log "too many unreachable loose objects" warnings fired across ≥6 worktrees + the root all day (auto-gc disarmed) — already tracked as open #2007 (worktree_audit gc-wedge tier); tonight's push recovery also surfaced 4 KEPT root-sync stashes ("manual triage") — the stash backlog is tracked (#1736, #1922).
  • Gate-fleet serialization waits (~50 min aggregate across 4 sessions) and #2105/#2106 multi-round gate grinds vs stale ledgers — bounded-by-design costs; the ledger cron (#2114) is the structural relief. #2105's session was still live mid-investigation of the test-order polluter at mining time; its filed #2118 planner should re-check #2105's events for a race.
  • daily stub push initially rejected (concurrent main); sync_repo_root.py landed it (04e41e96df on origin/main, verified).
  • Title-sync sweep (Step D): title-sync drift unchanged (8 rows: #432 #458 #654 #658 #664 #665 #763 #1226 — see logs/daily/2026-07-25.md). Read-only sweep exited 0.

Living-docs drift

  • living_docs.py check exited 1 with 200 findings (hash c117339a7440; count 199 → 200 vs the standing set — one new completed-with-clean-result task missing from question evidence). Materially the same drift as the open 06-29/07-04/07-06/07-07 re-synthesis proposals — the changelog shows nothing applied since 2026-06-05, so the open proposal stands; no separate re-proposal (same convention as the 07-29 hash-shift row). Event-stream row appended.
  • Parked-proposal re-consideration (Step B): 0 un-reconciled living-docs rejections, 0 parked-redundant follow-ups — nothing to re-surface.
