Daily — 2026-07-17 (0 promoted; 12 review filings; Codex ensemble outage day 1)

updated: 2026-09-03

What happened

  • Heavy autonomous day: 3,278 task-state commits across ~45 tasks. Most active: #1434 (258 commits), #1345 (164), #1090 (154), #1335 (153), #1415 (109) — experiment pipelines with crash-fix rounds, review rounds, and follow-up loops.
  • Infra fixes landed on main: #1490 (transactional GCP→RunPod failover cleanup — closes the pod-1417 idle-spend leak Thomas caught at 01:19Z), #1216 (the #864 zombie-GPU namespace veto ARMED), #1487, #1483 (route-3 open daily-held overlap dedup), #1485 (issue-wide keep-running shield enforcement).
  • #1072 drafted its clean-result ("The own-answer advantage and its unclosed layer-26 residual") through two interpretation-critique rounds; #1482 relaunched its SAE crash-fix round on GCP; #1481 ran a Phase-0 crash-fix round; #1492 (gotchas SAE token-pool bullet) filed → planned → implemented same-day.
  • Fleet-wide Codex ensemble outage ALL DAY: org quota exhausted until 2026-08-06 (root cause per #1472: lapsed ChatGPT Pro subscription). Every doubled review site ran single-Claude via the #1204 pre-spawn sentinel skip (worked correctly everywhere). Thomas acked at 23:20 ("wait it out"). #1472 sits blocked — needs his payment/account action.
  • No clean-results promoted today; the awaiting_promotion queue remains ~80 tasks deep.

Applied workflow improvements

No route-1 (trivial mechanical) fixes qualified tonight — every derivable fix was a behavior/logic change, so all went to independent review. 12 route-2 filings (6 from recursion-guard-parked candidates via the Step C sweep, 6 from the transcript problem sweep), all kind: infra, tags wf-fix + daily-auto-filed:

  1. filed for review #1493: extend #1288's squash-first merge-form routing to kind: experiment Step 9b merges (10/10 conflicted experiment merges since 07-12 burned a doomed first attempt; stale rationale clause at issue SKILL.md:10082). From #1065's parked candidate (fp 683132017c58).
  2. filed for review #1494: vm_disk_guard.py home_hf_repo_escalate_bytes() nonfinite env override → OverflowError; isfinite clamp + pinning test (+ sibling tier-(e) knob sweep). From #1457's parked candidate; gap confirmed live.
  3. filed for review #1495: bracket the always-on CLAUDE.md pgrep -af ownership-probe exemplar (self-match shape #1335 hit). From #1462's parked candidate.
  4. filed for review #1496: Step 9c selector doesn't map .claude/rules/*.md edits to their prose-pin tests (coverage today is coincidental via the invariant set). From #1468's parked candidate.
  5. filed for review #1497: route-3 needs-human tag silently dropped at filing — #1140/#1472 and all 5 open daily-held tasks carry [daily-held] only, so the PM "Needs you" block never enumerates them (root cause of the 9-day-undecided #1140). From #1483's parked candidate.
  6. filed for review #1498: Step 9c selector misses literal-path pinning tests (test_ruff_policy.py not enumerated for daily_drive_filings.py diffs). From #1483's parked candidate; NOT a duplicate of open #865 (different bug on the same file).
  7. filed for review #1499: post_step_completed.py --step 9b refused (canonical id is 9b-same) — record dropped and error ignored in the #1335 follow-up loop; alias + explicit call-site id. Transcript-mined (session 40c10095, ~11:45Z).
  8. filed for review #1500: mechanical enforcement of the Step 9a-ter inline payload lint gate — second #1388-class recurrence: inline-landed dotenv-violating issue1092 scripts kept Step 9c red fleet-wide most of the day, then 4 NEW violations landed the same evening. Transcript-mined.
  9. filed for review #1501: guard_repo_root_branch.sh false-positives on heredoc DOC-TEXT payloads naming a fenced git verb — blocked the 07-16 /daily body composition and was REPRODUCED LIVE tonight during candidate verification (the probe compound was killed whole). Transcript-mined + live probe.
  10. filed for review #1502: extend the file-time sibling advisory to OPEN wf-fix siblings by overlap — the #1479-vs-#1476 same-bug race discarded a full ~2.3h pipeline (plan → 4 reviewers → implementer → PR #1238). Transcript-mined.
  11. filed for review #1503: first-pass critic/fact-checker briefs on guard-artifact targets lack the windowed-read duty — 4 Usage-Policy refusal kills today (#1436 fact-checker ×2, #1443 Alternatives critic ×2), all recovered via rung-(b2) sonnet pins at ~35+ min cost. Transcript-mined.
  12. filed for review #1504: _LESSONS_RATCHET_BYTES as conflict magnet — within ~48h: 2 Step-10d merge conflicts (#1335 PR #1227, #1435 PR #1188), 1 fleet-wide trunk-red (#1462), 1 duplicated pipeline (#1476/#1479). Evaluate a self-maintaining ratchet; reasoned no-change acceptable. Transcript-mined (confidence low, filed per the no-deferral directive).

Filing record: logs/daily/filings-2026-07-17/filed.jsonl (all 12 terminal filed; spawns best-effort — the infra cap 5 means most defer to the watcher's proposed_infra_sweep backstop over the coming hours).

Other problems & notes

  • Step C sweep dispositions (8 no-file, all verified at compose time): parked candidates from #1380 (blocker-tag enumeration — already landed at codex-code-reviewer.md:721), #1414 (SKILL_REF filesystem-root false positive — landed as SKILL_REF_FS_ROOTS, commit 115d738b1c), #1423 (byte-ban family phrasing — both lines already carry the widened text), #1440 (issue952 shellout test red — allowlisted by #1437, test passes 17/17), #1445 + #1447 (same defect twice: issue1092 scripts' dotenv order — both scripts fixed on main), #1460 (resolved in-round, commit 404919cae4), #1463 (LESSONS ratchet bump — landed via #1476, constant reads 6800; duplicate #1479 archived). Routed-record markers posted on every source task.
  • retraction re-check: 11 marker-mined source tasks scanned (14 parked candidates); 0 filings suppressed by upstream retraction; the 8 no-files above were already-landed/resolved dedups, not retractions. #1065's archival note explicitly handed its residual to tonight's sweep (filed as #1493).
  • Usage-Policy refusal kills: ~11 across the fleet, all recovered by the existing ladder. Worst: #1463's storm (2 implementer kills + 1 sonnet autocompact-thrash + 5 consecutive orchestrator refusal turns; transcript ended on an API error at 17:10Z — watcher wedge-lane territory; the task nonetheless completed). Others: #1436 ×2, #1443 ×2 (→ #1503), #1090 interp-critic, #1417 implementer (45 tool calls / ~29 min lost), #1433 fact-checker, #1434 analyzer, #1453 planner, #1482 implementer. Cost estimate ~1.5-2h aggregate.
  • Fabricated SHA reached Thomas (chat session b19a1b9f): a short SHA was hand-extended into a figure URL; Thomas hit the dead link ("the link isn't working"). Direct repeat of the written feedback_never_fabricate_sha memory rule — compliance failure, no new mechanism to file (the rule + the #1467 rev-parse duty already exist; the same session also ran a rerun Thomas flagged as unnecessary).
  • Ad-hoc summary provenance recurrence (interactive session, 22:02Z): a model-organism status summary missed rerun cells and contrastive-vs-positive-only provenance; Thomas corrected ("Didn't we rerun this and keep more data"). Recurrence of the CLAUDE.md ad-hoc-results-provenance rule — noted, no new mechanism derivable.
  • #1345 follow-up chat: story character generated as "ARIA" where Thomas wanted the plain assistant (~5-6 GPU-h sunk); plan patched inline with disclosure. Same session: 3 production relaunches, one retracted misdiagnosis (cap-truncation claim corrected on the record), one reviewer-caught quote-closure gate bug.
  • #952 inline legs (PM session): leg 4 (eval-bank expansion) BLOCKED loud at datagen — china-divergence subject supply exhausted; needs Thomas's subject-source call, live in the interactive PM chat where he asked for the expansion (not filed route-3: the block was reported into the conversation he is driving). Legs 1-3 completed and folded; leg-2 vLLM OOM diagnosed + relaunched clean.
  • #1417 tail infra churn (early 07-18): flex-start queue timeout → second instance vanished from the DWS queue → RunPod failover pod bootstrap exit 1 → retry 2/3 in flight at transcript end. Watch item for tomorrow's brief.
  • #1090: GCP rc=1 crash (missing fu6_manifest.json) failed over to RunPod cleanly; a production ValueError: unknown context 'neg_sp_police' exposed a subprocess context-registry gap masked by the smoke's panel slice — already routed (#1435/#1475 filed). Merge friction on PR #1231 recovered correctly via worktree rebase after two guard blocks.
  • #1415: Batch API custom_id 64-char limit ValueError → 2 crash-fix rounds, fixed in-session with an id_map persistence scheme + tests.
  • Guards: working as designed all day — repo-root checkout block + piped-push blocks (#1439, #1345, #1090), banned sleep-chain blocks (#1345, #1463), unloaded-deferred-tool InputValidationError (one, #1484 session). One real false-positive class (heredoc payloads) → filed #1501.
  • Minor one-offs: 4 Write-before-Read tool errors (#1449), a transient origin/main ref-lock race (#1419, retry OK), two improvised inline-python one-liner crashes (#1426, #1476), one stale /tmp plan-path read (#1437).
  • Title-sync drift sweep (Step D): title-sync drift unchanged (8 rows: #432 #458 #654 #658 #664 #665 #763 #1226 — see logs/daily/2026-07-11.md for the verbatim rows).
  • Miner detail: logs/daily/mining-2026-07-17/chunk-{0..5}.findings.md (96 transcripts with 07-17 content; ~46 fully clean sessions).

Living-docs drift

  • living_docs.py check FAILs with 199 findings — normalized drift hash 078285c14444 EXACTLY matches the open re-synthesis proposal recorded 2026-07-07 (extending 06-29/07-04/07-06): ~75 dead legacy anchors, relates_to ⇄ evidence mismatches (incl. #722/#763/#494–#501), ~54 unlinked completed clean-results, 7 stale spec-role-header State-trailer rows.
  • drift proposal already open (logged 2026-07-07); not re-proposing. The standing proposal remains: re-synthesize open_questions.md (living-docs updater/backfill) — needs your ok; not auto-applied.
  • Parked-proposal re-consideration (Step B): the one un-reconciled living-docs rejection (#713) has had no context change — not re-surfaced; no followup-parked-redundant markers exist on any on_hold task — 0 revival candidates.
